Despite protesting his innocence, Sebastian Telfair was sentenced to three and a half years after being accused of a crime. His sister received probation for threatening Sebastian's ex-wife. After being sent to Rikers, his legal team managed to secure an appeal within two weeks, a rarity in the system. Sebastian expressed his disdain for Rikers but referred to his imprisonment as a 'blessing', as it allowed him to spend time with his family before the pandemic hit. His mother and older brother tragically passed away due to COVID-19. Despite the pain, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be close to his family during hard times.

As someone that’s had to deal with assigned council as well as private attorneys, I’ve seen public defenders run circles around people that are taking huge checks. Public defender doesn’t automatically mean they’re bad at what they do. It DOES mean they’re severely overworked and underpaid. I’ve seen Private attorneys do some questionable shit. Don’t be fooled to equate paying a lawyer with quality work. That can doom you even faster than having assigned council.
