I like that the movie made the book characters actually likable, because every book character was annoying and unlikable (Rodrick was most likable in the books somehow). Greg was worse in the books, despite how bad he was in the movie.

Yeah I remember the book ending with Greg angrily throwing his yearbook in the trash because Rowley got class clown lmao. The books are a lot more mean-spirited in general, for better or worse.

Greg was a literal character on Seinfeld in the books. But then again, I really don't think much has changed in what he does in this movie, as even when he does say sorry to Rowley, it feels very half-assed considering the amount of suffering he caused him like throwing footballs at him, breaking his arm, blaming him for being more popular, and trying to pass off the blame for the incident with the kids. Heck, rereading and rewatching the scene when he takes the blame for Rowley eating the cheese feels like he sacrifices nothing. Sure, he saves Rowley's reputation but the movie version makes it seem like Greg wanted his friendship back anyway, yet it feels like Rowley's the only one who suffers. Now one would argue that Rowley would suffer worst if the kid's found out that he ate the cheese, but the fact that he chooses to be friends with Greg again feels very off. Now, this is my personal gripe, but I feel that this book series would benefit more if it stay both faithful to the original, BUT WAS A TV SERIES instead. But as I mentioned, played Greg's mean spirited-ness like if he was a character on Seinfeld. I think what would benefit this series more if it was like the anti-sitcom, where the characters are totally socially inept, self-centered, inconsiderate, or even narcissistic, but not only does the show know this, but it really doesn't care if you like them, but makes it even funnier if you don't. This series could be a chance make a teen-sitcom, that's actually a satirical look at traditional teen sitcoms themselves. So even when Greg during each episode fails to come out on top, we feel conditioned to feel bad for him, even though he did this to himself.

Well, yeah. All of them are their own breed of awful aside from Rodrick (who in the books is probably the closest one to being normal). Greg is a sociopathic egomaniac, Frank is a lukewarm half-ass father who only gets involved in his kids' interests when they align with his own, Susan is just a straight-up karen in every sense of the word, and the way they're raising Manny up... Hoo boy, if Greg was bad they better prepare for the coming storm because Manny is set to become ten times worse.

A lot of people didn’t like this movie, but I actually enjoyed it for what it was. It kinda reminds a lot of people on their experience in middle school, especially being unpopular. Also, we can all agree the best character is Rodrick. We know this movie is probably not that popular, but seeing how it has 3 sequels, we can also tell it’s gotten a fanbase.

These books were iconic and everything exaggerated. Butttt for the Year Book we did have “Class Superlatives” in my middle school and many schools in the US does. For mine they did it only for 8th graders since our middle school grades are from 6-8. I actually won my “Best Smile” award and the entire grade picks from all the nomination, crazy part was I never really did smile with my teeth in photos at that age and still got it, so in a way it could be toxic because it just felt like out of all the nominations who was favor/popular out of everyone.

16:56 Rowleys parents are safety freaks and won't let him dress up as anything remotely dangerous or violent. They took off the knight's helmet, cut a hole so he could see better, made him wear a sweater over the rest of it so he wouldn't get cold, put reflective tape on the sweater, and replaced the sword with a glow stick. I feel like Greg and Rowley are the middle school versions of Michael Scott and Dwight Scrute. Greg has this desire to be liked by everyone but doesn’t realize that his actions are the reason why he alienates himself from everyone else. Rowley wants to be Greg’s friend no matter what but Greg is unappreciative of the things that Rowley does for him, and Greg envies the attention that Rowley gets just for being kind 😂

22:50 HUGE departure from the book. Say whatever else you want about him, Zoo-Wee-Mama WAS Greg's idea. First he wrote and drew everything, then Rowley asked for more to do, so Greg let him draw. He didnt like that, so he let Rowley write the speech bubbles. He didnt like that, either, so they parted ways. Greg came up with Creighton the Cretin, submitted it and actually won! BUT the editor of the paper completely changed the cartoon to make it more "educational" for students, to where it was then called Creighton the Curious Student, to where they started calling Greg a suck up, so he pulled the cartoon altogether. Which is when they replaced it with Rowleys edition of Zoo Wee Mama, and when Greg confronted him about it, Rowley said it was all HIS idea.

One thing that I found very interesting looking back on these films and the books is that when I was a kid and I would read these books I never realized how much of a jerk Greg is to his best friend. That movie came out when I was 13 and I remember absolutely hating him. And even though the movie follows his character quite closely to how he acts in the book I feel like when I was reading it I was imagining myself as the main character and as such I never had even realize how much of an a- hole this kid was 😅

Love to see your reaction, the books are great too. I still have to catch up on all of them someday, but read the first few a lot as a child!

It is kind of crazy how in this movie, Greg and Rowley have a Spongebob-Patrick love-hate relationship.

Even weirder: Angie didn't even exist in the books when this was made! She was literally made for the movie!

I have an older brother but I feel like if I had a little brother I would be Rodrick. I play the drums and bass and act just like Rodrick even though I don’t have a little brother.

I always thought the school in this movie looked like a high school. Same with some of the students. Anyways watch Rodrick Rules for sure! That’s even better IMO.
