When it comes to great chick flicks, My Girl, Sleepless In Seattle and Princess Bride all say hi. Good chick flicks don’t insult women’s or men’s intelligence. On the back end of that (literally), you have Mamma Mia and 50 Shades. Legally Blonde is somewhere in between. It’s the equivalent of the new Bill and Ted movie showing the main characters all grown up as lawyers. It doesn’t really work if you look at it like that. But Reese Witherspoon is charismatic enough to pull it off, even if she’s just playing a stereotypic valley girl who happens somehow to be an attorney.

The thing about this movie is that it deconstructs the stereotypes so thoroughly. Even though there's a joke about Elle getting in because of her looks, in reality, she was obviously the perfect candidate; she is clearly brilliantly intelligent and creative, has a business degree and leadership experience, got an almost perfect score on the notoriously difficult placement exam, and is clearly passionate. The point of the movie is not that she gets smarter and more serious, it's that she was ALWAYS smart, being bubbly and stereotypically feminine didn't make her any less intelligent, and she succeeds the most when she is being the most true to herself and not trying to conform to anyone else's standards. Also -- the implication is that Elle was Warner's "side piece" without knowing it, which is why he got engaged to Vivian so quickly and why Vivian hated her from the start (they were already together and long distance, both from old money families and "classy") -- the Jackie/Marilyn analogy, etc (which Elle didn't pick up on because to her Marilyn was a success businesswoman, not the "dumb side piece" the patriarchy likes to cast her as.) There's an AMAZING video essay here on KZbin about old money vs new money tensions in this story that actually adds a lot of context to the movie. I highly recommend it.

Not an argument, but a sincere question: How did "the patriarchy" paint Marilyn Monroe like a "dumb side piece" when she created that personality trait herself? She had choices. No one told her to get it on with the Kennedy brothers. That was her own bad decision. Monroe was a star because she had talent and was well paid for it. But, on her own time, she controlled the narrative and getting into affairs with married men (who were brothers) wasn't the best thing she'd ever done. Also, blaming her decisions on "the patriarchy' robs her of agency and ownership of her life. And it pretends that, "the matriarchy" had nothing to say about it; especially Married women. So, I just want to clarify what you mean so I can understand it better

The counselor said she needed at least a 175 to get in. The LSAT question we heard was a real sample question from the actual test. This is one of the few instances that implements the "study with distractions" method, and it pays off. Basically: never try to study quietly. It'll do nothing but make it worse for when you take the actual test. You study with distractions, anything quieter will feel like a piece of cake. And on the flip side: if it is noisy, now you're used to it. And as for her score: A perfect score is a 180. And she got a 179.
@cassieberringer7427
@cassieberringer7427 2 жыл бұрын
The study with distractions recommendation would probably be different person-to-person. I need silence and to be alone to be able to study, but I'm a great test taker. I need it silent to get all the information into my head. But once it is there, it can flow pretty easily out during the test so I've never had a problem. I wouldn't have changed anything about my study habits.

To prepare for her role as Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon spent two weeks studying the behavior of sorority girls, as she did not wish to portray a stereotypical airhead sorority image. She states on the DVD commentary that they were all very kind and polite, and she enjoyed her time with them. She also observed women shopping from the café at Neiman Marcus, and attended law school for a day.

is it a classic? yes one of your favourites? yes how many times have you seen it? the limit does not exist this is a film that empowers women 'hidden' in a chic flick, it shows that having a positive attitude and being kind to people and girls supporting girls are great ways to go, and it is absolutely brilliant. with the possible exception of the bend-n-snap, it has also aged amazingly well!

My wife asked me for years to watch this movie with her, and I confess that for the longest time I miss judged this movie for its cover. We watched it together, and it's a great movie. It just doesn't get the deserved attention because it goes in the opposite direction of certain agendas, but fortunately it goes in the right direction.
@carlalussini
@carlalussini 2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't get the deserved attention cause most of the people with that type of cultural power are men and they, no matter how cool, smart and vanguardist think they are, are just like you; men who grew up in a misoginist culture where you learned to think girly= inferior to manly. I find it so... interesting that even though you personally experienced, were aware, and wrote down here the exact reason why you underestimated art done by and for the female gaze, STILL, ended 1 minute later having to come up with some weird reasoning (about agendas wich I assume you mean political, and misogyny is a both parties problem) to explain how and why this movie is not highly regarded among other movie classics.
@danielandrade4296
@danielandrade4296 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlalussini Then let me make myself even clearer: the agenda I mean is a Leftist one. Critics are 90% (or even more) aligned with the "politically correct", so when a movie comes out and it doesn't go by all their "rules", the movie is flamed in magazines, websites, and so on, by those "experts in entertainment" - and most of the time those critics are female. The main character Elle succeeds in life without leaving aside tipically feminin traces, something that the "Cultural Feminist Police" hates - every female character that they praise is pretty much stripped of things these "watchmen of culture" believe must be abolished. Elle never stops worrying about her looks (keeps going to beauty salon and exercising), keeps wearing pink, and the main subject, she helps her friend with the guy she has a crush, instead of the "you don't need no man" speech. The problem with these critics is that they live in a bubble, they couldn't be farthest from the audience, but with social networks reducing the distance between people of every place, they found out that their voice is IRRELEVANT, they no longer form opinions. That's why some "old" movies (mainly from a time before social networks were such a huge deal) are being "discovered", because people are free from these critics' opinions. You want to see how the media is alienated AND alienating? Just read the critics opinions about "Top Gun 2" and "Lightyear", and see how the REAL NUMBERS speak louder that the media. No one wants the "progressist" crap, no matter how hard it's shoved down their throats, and now even studios huge as Disney face giant losses of money invested on an AGENDA instead of ENTERTAINMENT. I didn't watch this movie earlier because I didn't like the cover, it didn't get my attention, simple as that, but it seems that you must know me better than I know myself.

There a technicality Elle got wrong when she was roasting the sales clerk: the fabric wouldn't snag, it would pucker. The musical actually addresses this and changed the line. Edit: No, I am very very wrong. Rayon snags, China silk puckers, which is what they mention in the musical in place of rayon.

@@la.uralox Except in the musical, Elle needed Emmett's help to improve her studying habits and do better in class. In the movie, she does everything on her own. A lot of fans of the musical forgive this little detail because it's Christian Borle and he can do no wrong in their book.

@@justinnaniong7872 tbh I love that Emmett helps her, it gives his character more of a purpose and gives their relationship a proper backstory/reason to get closer. What I like about Elle is that she's always saying positive things - even when she's insulting Vivien saying she "dresses up like a frigid bitch" she's still not technically saying Vivien is one. She was kind to the salesclerk, even while thoroughly demonstrating that she's not just a dumb blonde with daddy's plastic. And then she's over it and doesn't hold a grudge, or talk trash later. I also love the fact that her dingbat friend (dumb brunette?) just casually speaks Vietnamese. These are ladies with unsuspected depths.

I love this movie because it doesnt shy away from having the sterotypically "feminine" girl who also is smart, and kind and loyal. Even the whole sorority is shown in a positive light. Reese Witherspoon was not first choice for this film but Christina Applegate from Married…With Children tv series but she passed because she did not want to play a “dumb blonde” and get typecast. In the book, it was set at Stanford Law School but the University would not allow filming so Harvard was second choice. Fun fact: Reese attended Stanford before dropping out to pursue acting in films like Freeway. A sequel Legally Blonde 2 came out and LB three will be made. The manicurist is from American Pie and Two Broke Girls tv series. Sadly Selma Blair the new fiancé has MS but did do a documentary on the disease. The irony is IRL the professor who touched Elle Victor Garber is married and GAY. Check out Auntie Mame(Rosiland Russell) and The Trouble with Angels for great humor!

Well the snap is to enunciate the chest, the arms push up the chest for extra attention and especially in person it would be a lot more noticeable and eye drawing.

How can you get better than this film? The musical. An absolute work of art. Filmed on Broadway. Worth a watch!

I love your reactions and sooooo excited for you to see this one. I watched this the night before I took the LSATs back in the 2010s. Needed that Elle Woods energy! Please do Sweet Home Alabama soon!!!

The musical version is REALLY good. Vivian's story arc is also very good. The guy Elle pretends to have broken up with so he can get in with the girls is the son of Tony Perkins, from Psycho.

Definitely a classic! I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this film and its sequel, but I definitely have watched it a lot! Saw it in theaters when it came out. Rented it so friends who hadn’t seen it could see it. And anytime it’s been played on television I have stopped and watched it. It’s just a fun film to watch! I enjoy the character of Elle Woods and seeing her effect the world around her. I was kinda sad they didn’t make more sequels, but I guess either they couldn’t think of anything else or they didn’t think they’d make enough money from any more. So many memorable lines from this film and the sequel film! My friends and I have definitely randomly quoted them at each other. Great video reaction! Glad you enjoyed it!!

Hold up, was that Warner guy - later - Alaric in *The Vampire Diaries* ?! 😱 And *Luke Wilson* ! 😄 I think. 😀 The mayhem at the "Chuck" bit sounds like everyone went crazy behind the scenes. 🤪

This is one of the best feminist movies ever. They took the dumb blonde stereotype and turn into something great without changing it. Also there is a musical which has one of the best songs ever about the gay pool boy. Look it up gay or European!
