Definitely, even though Rush Shah (Kamran) is by far the oldest of the main kid cast you can still sort of buy him as a slightly older looking HS senior. I think they did a really good job casting actors that were actually teenagers at the time they filmed the show.

I never cringed at Kamran tbh, i kinda found it refreshing we finally have a brown confident stud as the love interest. Brown people can be flirtatious and carry themselves with just as much swag as someone like Ryan Gosling can. Also the way the parents are in the show is exactly how desi (south Asian) parenting is. Which can be rather different from euro/white parenting styles so while you had a hard time understanding why they acted that way it’s culturally very realistic

This show has been so fun and I hope you’ve been enjoying it! Unfortunately “as bad as they say” happens to be coming from mostly people of NOT color including those who have not actually bothered to see the show. Seeing comments like “Marvel deciding to focus on a Muslim character…” in the most negative ways was just so disappointing to see. It’s an award winning comicbook line and even with reduced sales across the board for all comics the Kamala Khan comics are still one of Marvel best sellers since it was released in 2014. A big part of what makes "Marvel formula" is basically just a "Hollywood action blockbuster cliche" which is still present in most MCU stuff to this day. A little more creative than before, sure, but they are still a bunch of overproduced mediocre stuff

Yeah, while it might not be everyone's *favorite* Marvel show, most of the people I've seen who claim it's actually "BAD" are just whiny white/Christian people who don't like being asked to empathize with a brown Muslim family - because apparently empathizing with a raccoon, a tree, or a blue cyborg woman is acceptable, but empathizing with people from a different Earth culture is "forcing differences down our throats ughhh stop trying so harrrrd." I think you've found exactly the right spirit to enjoy the show: it's fun, lighthearted, and occasionally cringey in that way that many stories about being a teenager are cringey (because let's be real, most teenagers ARE cringey at one point or another).

Don't listen to the haters, Seb. Form your own opinions. This is such a good show. It gets way deeper further in; the first two episodes are just the start. My biggest complaint about it is that it's so full of stuff that not all of it has a chance to develop properly. They should have strong-armed Disney into allowing them eight episodes. You should also study up on Iman Vellani, who plays Kamala. She's from Canada, she's the daughter of Pakistani Muslim immigrants, and she's a massive Marvel fan. She got cast in the role on her last day of high school, so she's only a few years older than her character (16). She also looks really young, hence the joke about her and Paul Rudd in Episode 2. Overall, the casting for this show is perfect.

There's also this weird disconnect where people forget Kamala lives in the MCU rather than being a fan of the movies. She's forming her opinion based on what she's seen of them as a civilian and what's she's been able to glean from news media. This show isn’t bad at all. I’m not a teen nor am I Muslim but I have been enjoying the show (episode 5 was a bit weird tho). It’s fun and lighthearted and I get to learn about a new culture. The only people saying this show is bad are 1) people who still can’t get over them changing her powers, 2) xenophobes that hate anything Muslim and 3) those M-She-U/“Marvel has gone woke” dumbasses. Also something that you should note (although I’m sure you’ve probably been told about on patreon or something): Asian parents being strict isn’t just to be strict. They are just scared of the possibility of the most negative outcomes when they’re children socialize “too much” and they don’t know how to open up to a different mind set because they grew into that with their culture and that is a flaw that I think the show is maybe trying to call out(?) just like how American parents let their kids do pretty much anything at such a young age. Too much restriction or too much freedom are both not good. If you’re a person of color who also happens to be living in America (me) you’ll know what I’m talking about😂

Expect the end part of episode 3, everything is amazing. As an Indian the family drama aspects are so relatable. In later episodes it even deep dives more towards the South Asian culture and history. Just an excellent work by Marvel for their South Asian fans.
