I'm 38, my mother was addicted to pain pills until she passed away and my father is an alcoholic... I was following both of their footsteps in my teens and then I woke up one day when I was 20 and I was just done! So I flushed the pills and stopped drinking!! I don't have kids, but I broke the cycle with myself!

This is a great one. My dad was a hardcore drug user, drinker and multiple packs of cigarettes a day, starting as an early teenager. When I was born he slowly turned his life around and was always my best friend. Before I was 5 he cut it down to cigarettes only and now he hasn’t drank or smoke or did drugs in over 30 years. My dad never made it out of 5th grade but is lead superintend for a half billion dollar company and is such an inspiration to everyone around him. Despite no education he still makes well over 6 figures a year. He means the world to me and I’ve never had a better friend.

Man I remember when this song came out, it hit me kinda hard bc this was pretty close to my dad except his wasn’t alcohol it was about everything else after he got injured on the job site when I was younger. He was never the same after that and got hooked on pain meds and really turned into an a-hole for the rest of his life. What’s crazy is even though he was the way he was , he lead me from watching him to make myself a promise to never be like him and to do everything to be a good person to everyone until they give me a reason not to be . I can’t even take pain meds when I’m suppose to after an injury or surgery bc I’m scared I’ll get hooked

My grandfather served in WWI and came home an alcoholic which led to my dad and his brother being the only kids in a town of 1000 with divorced parents. This was unheard of in the 1930s, and it caused them to fight quite a bit of criticism. Like the son in the video, they both lived lives with a purpose and determination to not embarrass their kids. Both were the top graduate in their high school classes, naval officers in WWII, naval doctors during the Korean War and small town family physicians for the remainder of their lives. This song really hits home for me to try to be the best example for my 21 yr old son.

My dad died in 2002. What I remember best are times when we watched football together, cheesy sci-fi movies, built things in the garage, when he taught me how to use tools and how to maintain a car, and that one night when he was scared to death because my mom went on a business trip by herself and we went to Shakey's because he just needed to get away from the house for a while. Just love them and be there for them. That's how you show them best.

It's a great song to remind us that people are watching and learning from you. It's a sad song in many ways, but I bet it will have New Meaning when again in 10 years when your kids are teenagers. You are a great Dad that cares and it shows. Work can be crazy and finances do change but keep your family Safe and Happy. Another good one by Billy is "People are Crazy"

One of the things that always stuck with me about they video is that even though his dad had problems, he still attempted to try, even if he didn't make it through and was drunk. He still showed up. I know a lot of people that don't even try.

As I've said before, as a dad to 3 daughters who are now 40, 38 & 30, I have asked them countless times to forgive me for my mistakes, for letting them down. They tell me I was always there for them & they love me unconditionally. Talk about a daughter's love for their daddy.

On a different topic, have you heard of Mat and Savanna Shaw? They are a father-daughter duo who also live in Utah, that started singing together near the beginning of covid. The daughter had joined a local youth choir and wanted to sing on social media as a way to connect with her friends, then asked her dad to join her. He had sung when he was young so he agreed, and something magical happened. Here is something they did earlier this year (first time I have seen them with back up singers): When You Believe ("The Prince of Egypt") | (Official Music Video) | Father Daughter Duet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH-4iJR3eb6Imbc

This song is hard. As a child of addiction watching my father do all these things it makes me fight hard to make everyday so much better for my kids. I couldn't even have a beer with my son home until he was 8 because I didn't want him to think of me like I thought of my father

Yes, country music can be very formulaic. There's a pretty rigid structure to follow. So, there's a danger of it being cheesey. But the amazing talent of some songwriters is their ability to work within that structure and still make such moving works of art.

I don’t know about cheesy. As a kid who’s parents divorced and had to drive my drunk dad home before I even had a license or go to the store to buy him cigarettes because he wouldn’t get off the couch. This song definitely definitely hits a nerve.

So with fathers day coming up anfld mothers day that just passed , I was wondering if you could react to 2 songs for me? For my mom, there's a song by Mike manual called... ..phone in heaven And for my papa He didn't have to be by Brad paisley If you could play those 2 songs it would be appreciated. Thank you and love you.
