Second Generation Nissan Leaf | Fully Charged

It's taken too long, but finally here is my review of the 2nd generation Nissan Leaf. Built in Sunderland UK.
Since recording Nissan have passed the 100,000 global sales milestone.

Norway is very similar to New Zealand in many ways, the population is similar, around 5mil, and 80% of New Zealand's power is generated from renewable sources. Saying that, there must be something different, because where Norway has 42% of EV ownership, New Zealand only has 0.2% of EV ownership. I suspect it is how the government has embraced EVs in Norway which is different. Love this show, keep it up.

I really enjoyed this Leaf review and I like my Leaf very much in the summer but not in the winter. Two years ago I leased a 2012 Leaf, I have 29,000 miles on it now and after watching this video and reading the viewer comments, I am still in the dark when it comes to the heater. To be honest, I don't care HOW it works, but I do care about the impact it has on battery consumption because that affects range. In St.Paul Minnesota last winter we had 4 days that hit -22F. My round trip drive to work is 46 miles. Even if I preheat the Leaf while connected to the wall charger, I cannot complete the 46 mile drive without stopping for a charge if the temp is below zero. I use climate control ONLY when the front window is difficult to see out of. If I can see out of the front window, I drive without heat. So when this Leaf review says that the heater is 3X more efficient than my 2012 Leaf, it really has my attention. 2 more observations: The tires on the Leaf might be great in states that have no snow, but in Minnesota winter, they slide around a lot. Putting on winter snow tires is a big improvement. Also, one of the comments attached to this video noted how Nissan dealers don't really want to sell electric cars. I also experienced that at Nissan. I was surprised that with perhaps 15 sales people on the floor, only 1 had the ability to sell a Leaf. Even worse was the Ford dealer. That Ford salesman very enthusiastically tried to talk me out of buying any brand of electric, even Ford.

I bought my 2012 Leaf and feel the same that you do about driving it in the winter. I'm in Minneapolis and drive about 32 round trip everyday. If my work didnt offer me a 110 plug and reserved parking i would have traded it in. I made it two winters on the stock tires and it was horrible. Also i found the stock tires are undersized for the weight for this car. I had two tires grow buldges on the sidewall. I went with a better allseason and bumped up to a 225 width tire for a little more foot print. I am thinking about buying a second leaf (repairable) to modify my leaf into a AWD dual motor and increase the range by adding the as much of the second battery pack to it.

Bryan, I have a fair amount of experience with building cars (street rods) and I must say that your thoughts about creating an AWD Leaf that carries a dual battery pack sounds like a very large project. Excuse my intruding in to your plans, but I think the AWD aspect wouldn't be worth the effort... unless you are doing it for the mechanical enjoyment. If you could find a battery pack from a Leaf at a reasonable price, then I think adding as much of the second battery pack would be a very interesting project. I really like my Leaf in summer, and if the battery capacity were higher, it would become a great electric car for Minnesota winter. I have one more year on my lease. If Nissan really does come out with a Leaf with a larger battery, then I would get another. If they don't, then I might bite the bullet and get a Tesla. If you decide to pursue a salvageable Leaf, you should try to find a 2013 or newer because you could pirate the improved heater and also the charger because it charges twice as fast as the 2012. With the improved heater, newer charger, and a larger battery, you would have an incredible Leaf !! The additional battery weight might limit how much of the second battery pack you add, but it sure sounds like a fun project. You are in Minneapolis and I am in White Bear Lake. Yeah, I think if I have the time to do it and can fine the right salavage car it would make a fun project. And your right on the 2013 or newer for the upgraded tech. And as far as adding the second cars batteries i would try and add them in Modular so I could just add them as needed. Maybe make a sleeper auto cross car. It wouldnt be super fast but it would be unexpectedly faster :-) If the wife gives me the Green light ill start posting some videos when i have spare car in the garage. Bryan

Fantastic review. Great car. I would be more than happy to drive one. If the UK had an infrastructure to rival Denmark, I think it would be a no-brainer for a huge number of people. Also, I think that a comparison with the VW Golf would be seen by anyone with a motoring interest as a massive compliment. you've got to love how he makes a big deal about nissan using the same assembly line and mounting the motor the same way, etc. as their gas powered cars... as if the fact that they're basically just cramming a motor and battery into recycled old gas powered tech rather than innovating is something to be proud of.

My 2013 Nissan Leaf heater packed up pretty soon after I got it. It is being fixed tomorrow but it did take 3 weeks for the part to come from Timbuktu or wherever they make the part. Great review as always, especially the bit about wee.

I've had a new Leaf since Dec 14. It's great for bopping about town, but an absolute nightmare on any slightly longer journeys. For example, driving from one town to another today: 35 miles there + 35 miles back = 70 miles. Easy, right? Wrong... to manage the journey, I had to keep my speed to 30 miles per hour, which is ridiculous on a British "A" road; it upsets other motorists and takes too long. There are no rapid chargers on this particular "A" road, which is 186 miles long; not a single charger. Even if there was, Ecotricity now charge £6 per charge, which, when you factor in broken chargers, waiting in a queue to charge and the messing about using an App instead of an RFID plastic card, if all starts to feel like way too much hard work.

Sounds like a problem with your local infrastructure. £6 is ridiculous. Over the entire island of Ireland, it costs exactly €0.00 and there are fast chargers dotted along every motorway.

I borrowed a tesla last weekend and the one issue I had was the cost to charge it up. In Brighton we have a Charge Your Car chademo charger and it's £3.50 for the first ten minutes and 25pence per minute after that. This worked out quite expensive. This is a receipt for charge session at charge point 70111, Withdean Sports Complex: Session started at: 2016-06-26 15:49:47 Session ended at: 2016-06-26 16:57:56 Tag serial number: 20000000000C83 Energy (kWh) drawn: 33.6 Cost: ?18.00 £18 to charge for just over an hour? To add insult to injury the charger limited the current after fifteen minutes which meant i was there longer. I think an upcoming episode could cover this issue. For almost all EV driving the charging happens at home or at slow chargers and is a lot cheaper than that. Borrowing a Tesla, you didn't experience the massive savings you can make through home charging every day during a commute which easily offsets any additional cost at fast charge points. You'll also find that the Tesla superchargers would have been free and charged much faster than a standard FCP.

I'm absoloutley in love with the negative replies people are posting of tiny niggles and pedantry. So many circumstancial arguments that it proves that EV motoring really is the cheapest way to supercede fossil-fuel burner vehicles. In the end if the car manufacturers hadn't spent so much money promoting the piston engine over the turbine engine for road vehicles then maybe they'd have enough money left to make piston engines more efficient than they are currently ;) Gratz on this review, pending a test drive I'm pobably looking at trading in my Renault Zoe for a Leaf Mk2.

The thing I don't understand is why companies put the effort into designing a new car to be electric only and still try and place the electric motor and batteries into a traditional car drive-line space. Nissan needs to look at Tesla.

I am sure its partially because the production can reuse previous optimizations used for normal petrol cars, as he also demonstrates very well with the bits showing the actual production running on the same assembly lines as fossil fuel cars. Tesla has no car manufacturing so could build a company around an electrical car from scratch - hard for the big motoring companies to turn around on a dime like that.

??? As far as I've read, the Nissan LEAF is the same as the Tesla, in that it's been designed with the batteries in the bottom of the car under the seats, unlike the Ford Focus. btw... mine is purchased and on the assembly line; a 2015 Morning Sky Blue SL.

I seem to remember Tesla's first car was based on a Lotus Elise so even they chose a conventional platform initially to test the water. The BMW i3 is more like the present Tesla in as much as its a ground up design.

That's right, batteries are underneath the car. They don't take up any boot space at all. The gen 1.5 and 2.0 leafs have quite a lot of boot space. The electric motor is located under the hood. that could be what the OP was getting at. The reason for that is the Leaf is not big enough to put the electric motor anywhere else. the Tesla Model S is big enough to support the motor(s) and batteries underneath the vehicle, allowing for storage space at the front and back of the car.

Hi Rob, excellent video as usual, I have a question, or maybe dilemma is more appropriate a description. 'Can you live with the electric transport everyday'. My dilemma, I am in the process of a Tesla S purchase, but thought a good idea would be a interim phase (£100k for properly spec'd S is not uncommon) of a nearly new 2nd Generation Leaf to prove the living with and the everyday usability quagmire. I am in the process of setting up a hybrid/electric car specialist dealership and there lies the original interest in practicing what you preach so to speak, but genuinely I am very interested in the technology. Although being a petrol head its hard to give up on the V12 BMW I use everyday but I really want to come at from the whole ownership experience and not just the green/not green argument. I have always been a fan and your candid and pragmatic approach to this subject and the use of electric transport/green energy I find interesting. So enough waffle can you say that the new Leaf is useable on daily basis or is the hybrid/range extender (like the new BMW) more practical.. I usually do 300-350 miles a week then fill up, normally no more than 60 miles in any one day. I do have two other cars but I would like to use electric as much as possible (the development of the new electric racing series and the direction of F1 shows the market is being taken seriously. I do have a vested interest in proving this total lifestyle change and lifetime ownership model as I want to show that owning an electric vehicle (second hand at least for now) is not just the Bastian of 'Eco drivers' and controlled by the main dealers but can be seen as a very viable choice. I must say the whole approach by Tesla was very different almost radical for me, not your typical car manufacturer approach although Rob, it does have a steep cost of entry. Rob it would be interesting to hear from you regards the cold hard facts of infrastructure and usability. I live in South Wales so I am still investigating charge points and regional incentives (any information would be appreciated). On a separate note having built my own house I struggled back in 1996 to implement the renewable/almost of grid "wish/plan' due to lack of proven systems back then and the cost of entry. I just wished that market had developed as quickly as this one. I am sure you may say perhaps it has. However, it seems that it is always a balance between cost/principles and every day practicality that governs our decisions. Look forward to hearing from you Rob.

Since that time there have been leaks that went past the safety sensors and out right spills. If you are afraid of losing battery life during an 11 hour blackout then go ahead and buy a hybrid. But know this you and plug your EV into the house using an inverter and power your toys.

Ferkemall's comment relates to the untrue advertisement in the sense that pretty much everything Ferkemall says is also untrue. His claim that the car costs £28k with battery lease is bullshit. If you take the battery lease option, the car only costs £15,990 in the UK. His claim that the battery pack replacement is £6k is also bullshit. The actual cost in the UK is £4920. There have been virtually no cases of anyone executing the Nissan battery warranty because nobody goes under 70% before 5 years or 100K Kms. But the very few cases where it has happened, Nissan have done a full replacement to 100%. Ferkemail is full of shit.

He has, he did a 'test drive' a while back, they drove into Lincoln which, at the time, was the only town in the UK with no public charging. (There is now, and they named the charger after him) Unfortunately for the TG production team, the Leaf they used had tracking technology so Nissan technicians could see that someone had driven the car around a village outside Lincoln for 2 or 3 hours before the recording started. This was a production decision to enable the cars to 'run out' when they arrived in the centre of Lincoln. That's fine, TG is an entertainment show, that's how you do it. He did say he really liked driving the Leaf. :-)

Robert, I'd like you video more if you included some of the technical improvements in the second gen car rather than just the user interface improvements. Is the battery any better? Is the motor the same? How have the cars control algorithms changed?

The battery hasn't changed. The charger has moved into the engine bay on top of the engine. The motor has been slightly improived IIRC, but nothing dramatic. (I went to a talk from Nissan Project manager which had a fair amount of detail).

Are you in UK or elsewhere? You can research what tax incentives you might get for going clean. Here in California the deposit for a lease is $2400 and the state gives a cash rebate of $2500, effectively negating the deposit. Then the leases start around $220 through to around $260.

geffel I'm in the UK but I plead special circumstances as I'm an OAP and disabled, so I lease a car through a UK charity called Motability. My current (and previous!) vehicles were Hyundai, chosen originally for their low 'Initial Payment' but the current one - an IX20, is proving very versatile and reliable, if a little thirsty. The IP on the Leaf Acenta ( my preferred choice) is £600 ($750) which for me is a lot of money. But on the bright side, I'm still at the research stage, so my final choice will depend largely on IP (though for environmental reasons I have restricted my 'short list' to electric cars.) As they say in the small print everywhere, we'll see!

John Benton Ah yes, I know what Motability is. My mother's friend had a car via that laudable scheme (I'm an emigrant fro mthe UK). I was about to ask what the Various Leaf model names were when I realised they translate to the US versions which are S, SV and SL. After much going back and forth and a reluctance to say goodbye to my Audi S4, which is (was) a 340 hp V8 11mpg German monster and the sort of thing that Top Gear presenters would have razzed about in on their track (in 2004), I succumbed to the cheap deals and cheap lease payments on a VW eGolf. I'm still jittery and worrying about the choice, about giving up the beautiful Audi and taking on a car that can't go very far without requiring at least a half hour to refill, about having a new car that can be scratched and about the payments. As a contractor I never quite know if I will be paid or not. Good luck with your choice.

Thanks. Your post was most enlightening. The two models of Leaf that interest me are the (midrange) Acenta, and top-dollar) Tekna. I Cant remember what the base model is called. I'm glad your Mom took advantage of thr Motability scheme; it's proved a life-saver fro me (I've been having cars off them for over 40 years, and they keep getting cheaper to lease, so I have high hopes for 2017 when my current car is due for replacement) I can imagine the uncertainty you face, and It's quite a risk you're taking. I hope you're taking the risk into account when you're setting a fee! Best of luck with your VW. (They're not available in UK at the moment, but things are changing very quickly!) Please please Nissan put a proper gearlever on the next Leaf, no more guessing whether it has actually gone in to D or not or gone back into N. Fit a proper key start , it feels so un-reassuring to press a button and to perform the same action to turn the car on, and off. Make the regen etc properly adjustable , or at least stay in max regen (B) until you take it off. Not a bad car but I wish it was a superb car. It could be. Make a version with useable boot space too (estate Leaf??)

One little point; ICE cars do not have heaters warmed by an electric coil. They invariably have heat exchangers (And what a source of heat!)

+John Benton My ice car has both. It uses the coil while the engine is cold then switches to heat exchanger when it gets to a certain temp. You would never know from inside the car and it works extremely well. Quite a lot of modern diesels do this for quicker warm up times and a comfort.

John Benton Sounds great but is mostly unrealistic - though electrics are a lot cheaper to run. That 2p/mile is usually based on getting 4-4.5mi/kwh which they might possibly do in a test centre in ideal conditions but it's as realistic as the mpg claims of ice cars - worse in a lot of cases. I've been driving an i3 for a few days and can't get it past 2.0mi/kwh even in eco pro+ and driving like a saint. Trouble is it's cold out and the heater smashes efficiency. It's also near as makes no difference £40k of car for something the size and performance of a diesel mini. I like electrics and they are better than ice cars in my opinion but we have to be realistic about it.

John Benton I never said I don't like them - quite the opposite. All I'm saying is if you go round spouting such pie in the sky and people buy them based on that they will most likely be put off ev's for a long time after. Have a look at how the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been shot down in flames for stating 148mpg then returning 40-60 of that. EV wise realistically it's 4-6ppm presuming you only charge it on cheap night rate electric. That's still way under half the price of most ice vehicles and not far off half the price of a decent hybrid. Lets tell people that instead of some spurious figures they will never get unless they have a tail wind and never use the heater/ac or anything else we've become used to.

I still think Nissan Leaf is a city car only because it could be very annoying to charge 3 or 4 times when going on a long trip. So tesla or a hybrid would be a better option.

+ElectricCarHomepage.com How many cities do you know that are 40+miles across - realistically the distance you can go from start point and still return without a charge at all? Having to plan charging for a long trip isn't really an issue if you're only doing that kind of trip a couple times a year. If you're doing 400+miles regularly it's the wrong car but then not many people do that anyway.

Very quiet - they had to add an engine-noise generator, which runs under 35mph (kph?, I forget) to avoid surprising peds. Above that speed tyre/road noise is like any other modern car.

Technically it's not the second generation but a mid-cycle refresh... The second generation isn't out for a few years. Traditionally, electric pumps and heaters are not reliable which is why they were abandoned in the mid 20th century. I wonder how diff the tech is now.....

Dane, you're kidding right? Electric pumps and heaters were abandoned in the mid 20th??? You don't have an airconditioner then? You've never seen a heat pump in a modern building? How does your fridge work? In case you don't realise your refrigerator is exactly that. An electric pump/heater that pumps the heat out of the fridge and into the kitchen. Mine has run all day every day for the last 8 years and shows no sign of stopping. The one I had before that ran for 35 years, all day every day. It was still working when I got rid of it for a smaller one.

Why not have a brand that have more than one 100% electric model? the technology is allready here and ahead that we have now i think that Nissan could have another elecrtic car like Qashqai or other Nissan model, maybe the nv200 doesn´t have the same impact as normal model

+Johnny JP The E-NV200 is electric. So is the E-NV Evalia. Renault do the Zoe, the Twizy and various vans. VW do the Gold E and the E-up!. Tesla do the Model S and Model X. Remember it was only what - 15 years ago where the only hybrid you ever saw would be a Prius. Now they're all over the place and being made by loads of makers. Electrics a few years ago were basically the Leaf and the Renault Fluence. They're coming but his kind of thing takes a while to develop and release. Remember even most conventional cars take around 4 years from design to production. When they have to develop completely new battery packs, new chassis, new layouts, etc it all adds time. On the good side I think it's been taken up pretty strongly now so over the next 5-10 years we should see a big jump in the ev's available.

Alright... I watched the video till I heard 75-85 miles of range... Whats wrong with those manufacturers??? Tesla is building a car with a range of 265 miles.... and they want to improve that to more... And suddenly Reno and Nissan starts making cars with 80-90 miles of range... Cmon... Improved heater??? Improved cameras?? Whats the point if there is no range???

The only obstacle that I can think of is that small issue of price. Tesla has successfully established themselves as a luxury brand. No one would pay $100k for a Leaf.

Kent Purdy, indeed - and that is why the Leaf is so successful. Its affordable and have just the right range for the majority of daily driving for a commuter living somewhat close to a city.

The point is that an average daily drive is something like 10-20 miles or maby less, many people even drive 2-3 miles each trip. At such driving you really don't need all that range. Increasing range results in more battery, therefore more weight and higher cost. They can improve range if they want to, but it was not the goal. Also, for now, cars like Leaf is thought of as a 2.car rather than the only car.

Mindaugas V the Tesla simply has a much larger battery cell compared to the LEAF, BMW i3, Ford Focus EV, etc. The trade off is the weight, hence the reason why the tesla is made from lighter weight materials like carbon fiber and aluminium body frame. Double the size of the battery = Double the driving range. The only way that BMW i3 (non ER) has a longer range than the LEAF is because they reduced the overall weight of the car. But the i3 has virtually no cargo space compared to the LEAF or Tesla.

Why does it have a great big lead-acid battery under the bonnet? Yes I know it drives the usual 12V stuff, like the lights, but it has to be charged from the Li-ion batteries using a small voltage converter. Why don't they make the voltage converter just a little larger and get rid of the ugly heave old piece of obsolete technology?
