Even worse, if you dont have any kind of cancer, this kind of treatment would leave you worse off that if you just took regulae HIV medicine. Yeah you wont be cured by it, but the transplant requires supression of the inmune system, wich is what we are trying to avoid when someone is treated for hiv. It may not have a viable cure (yet) but you can live till your hair becomes grey enough no one would guess what was its original colour with standar treatment, making the worst part of HIV the pill side effects and the stigma (things that should also get better as time moves on)
@jojox97915 жыл бұрын
No but I think the whole point is that they may be able to, in the future, find a way to replicate the receptors and create a vaccine or medication that wouldn't require a marrow transplant..at least for certain strains. At least it's SOMETHING. Once the cocktails came out it seems like redestch has halted quite a bit. HIV was one tough son of a bitch to fight. I'm no medical expert but I know it just kept reproducing and was resistant to just about everything. I specifically remember too clearly when it first came out. (Ok not when it first came out but when I was old enough to understand what it was) I was about 13 when I first heard of it (circa 1981?) And I had myself convinced I had it because I has kissed a boy. THAT is how little we knew of how it was spread. Of course I'm talking about a time well after is was discovered and no longer referred to as GRID.

I work in the HIV field and I chose to watch this video to see how correct what you're saying is. I wanted to make sure that it wasn't "sensational" or full of half-truths. I was happy to hear you talk about the delta 32 mutations and CCR5 receptors. You went more in depth than I was expecting and made it easy to understand to a general audience, and this is a really great introductory video I could absolutely use to help teach people what happened in with the London Patient. The absolute ONLY thing I would add is that like cancer, there are different "types" of HIV. Not every strain of HIV is connected to CCR5. There are other strains of HIV that aren't affected by CCR5. Basically this "cure" is only "effective" for people who have a particular strain of HIV (which is less than 50% of HIV+ people).
@lpad3215 жыл бұрын
Pace Marshall the other thing that’s being left out of this case is the fact that after a bone marrow transplant patients are place on immunosuppressive medications. Most people with HIV have normal immune systems until AIDS develops. Knocking out someone’s immune system to prevent a virus from doing the same isn’t really a “cure”

Even if they found a way to block the CCR5 receptor, the patients would still have to take the drugs for the rest of their lives. However, it would still be a huge break through if they could make it work without any adverse affects to cellular response due to deactivated CCR5 receptors. Fingers crossed!!!!

@Gnuling, the London patient had a bone marrow transplant that had a mutation in the CCR5 receptor gene and the HIV virus couldn’t attach to it so that patient didn’t need to take antivirals. If scientists developed a drug to block the CCR5 receptor, it wouldn’t be a one time pill, permanent fix. The patient would have to take the receptor blocking drug for the rest of their life. I’m sorry, I should have explained better.

My father had a bone marrow transplant for his Non-hodgkin's Lymphoma treatment. He had 50% of chance of dying in the first year from Graft vs. Host disease. He had to have both of hips replaced from steroid damage. A friend of mine Nathan had a bone marrow transplant for his leukemia. Instead of the high dose steroids attacking Nathan's hips; it attacked his spine. His spine collapsed on itself, and Nathan didn't make it. I hope and pray for a cure for HIV and Aids, but I agree with Dr. Mike that there shouldn't be a rush to call this a cure. Bone marrow transplants are tremendously high risk treatments. I doubt it would work in under developed countries where people can't keep themselves from getting sick during that first year. I look forward to updates on this and whether or not it can be replicated. A treatment for HIV that can put in in remission is a step in right direction. I just would like one from which people in Africa, for example, can benefit as well.
@ikoghoe5 жыл бұрын
Worry not luv. We're curing it with herbs. Takes anywhere from 6months to a year and no DNA mutations needed. When I was 6 or 7 a university professor in Edo state Nigeria cured about 11 people. He died mysteriously shortly after going public. Another one year's later also in Nigeria died shortly after going public with curing his patients. The one you've probably heard if is Dr Sebi, who also mysteriously died in police custody after winning court cases in New York. He had over 150 patients cured of several diseases including both HIV and full blown AIDS. But alternative medicine cannot be controlled by big pharma and they won't give up their billion dollar industry for plant medicine. Anyway, my point is, herbal medicine is doing quite well down here. No thousand dollar transplants needed.

Thank you for your efforts in promoting medical literacy. Medicine is such a highly specialized field that, short of trying to self-educatate (falliable) or go to med school yourself (expensive and time-consuming), there aren't a whole lot of opportunities for average people to gain the sort of knowledge that medical professionals have. So when you make these videos and you explain what terminology means, how things interact in your body, etc - you're bridging a huge gap in understanding. Your videos are such a valuable resource and I hope you continue making them for a long time. 🙂✌️

Doctors are not responsible at all for finding cures/vaccines/medications/ect. You are mis-informed. That would be the scientific community who does these things.
@giannag49175 жыл бұрын
Lassa Fever Doctors are part of the scientific community, and they do help with research. Doctors are on the patient side of things rather than the "bench lab" side of science. So they do help with research...but not really doing cell research or anything. Edit: Cell research as in finding out what cells cause it, creating vaccines to fight against the flu, etc.

Great video, thank you for being concrete about it rather than play on people's sensibility to hope... I have been HIV+ and on arv medication for 3 years so far... it's going very well, but there's always the fear, what if all the accidentally missed doses (as rare as they are) would add up and cause the virus to become resistant... what if the suppressed viral load can still cause bodily malfunctions, especially that I'm a smoker and pretty much addicted to nicotine... what if the constant use of meds adds up to kidney failure or other disorders associated with constant use of meds over a long period of time... watching this give me hope that maybe someday I won't have to worry about these things anymore, so keep doing what you do, doc, I think I speak for everyone when I say I truly appreciate your content 😁

Dr Mike, you are the most adorable doctor in the world, (I can say that because I’m a granny) you explain things so easily and clearly, it’s a great pleasure to listen and learn from you. On the other hand, I feel sorry for all the girls following you; with tears in their eyes and sighs in their chests (or maybe you’re gay and then I feel sorry for those poor boys with tears in their eyes) but you are a really great teacher above all, with fantastic communication skills. All the best to you, keep up the good work and many thanks.
