We are back at it responding to your comments and questions via this monthly video series. I love reading and responding to your comments and as you can tell I'll jump into the comments section with a reply or a heart quite often. If one of the questions I answered was not detailed enough or you want more info on the subject please let me know so that I can make a dedicated video giving you all of the info!
A couple favorite questions/comments from this video are
1) Should doctors have tattoos?
2) Wearing glasses hurts vision?
3) No Nut November?
4) Circumcision?
5) Waking up during surgery?
6) Getting nervous during tests?
7) High school Doctor Mike?
8) Whats the deal with birth control?
9) Concussions
Doctors are traditionally unreachable and I want to change that. So hop into this video’s and any other of my video’s comment section and ask dr mike! I want to see your username pop up on my next responding to comments video.
If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Medical Drama Review Series in a couple of weeks so please submit more names of shows/episodes you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

The “waking up during anesthesia “ question terrifies me so much and it’s because I have been through something like this TWICE!! I’ve had more than 15 surgeries since I was 11 years old, I am now 39. When I was having surgery on my foot I was told that I would be put into a “twilight sleep” and I wouldn’t remember anything from the surgery, that It wouldn’t be any different than the surgeries I’d had prior to that one where I was completely asleep as far as knowing what had happened during it. Well, I’m not sure where at in the process of removing a piece of my metatarsal they were but I became aware of sounds and even smells for a small period of time. I couldn’t see or feel anything, thank god, but I started to hear the voices of the surgeon and nurses and then the very loud sounds of the bone saw. In my head I’m thinking I am just dreaming or they’re not actually working on me because I didn’t feel anything but then I started to smell a horrible burning smell and a smell of what I assume was the bone because it’s a smell I didn’t recognize but it was going on at the same time as the sawing sounds. It may have been something else but that’s just what I always attributed it to. It didn’t last more than a minute and I don’t remember anything else from that time but When I woke up after the surgery was over i mentioned it to my dr and she just kinda laughed and said “oh yeah, we got it under control “! The 2nd time this happened was so much worse and I actually am kicking myself to not doing something about it because it was extremely disturbing! I was in a much more aggressive surgery for an ovarian mass that was so big it had began pressing down on the tube that goes from the kidney to the bladder causing my kidney to become extremely backed up and enlarged to twice it’s size. In this surgery I was put completely under and I had 2 different doctor’s performing surgery on me. 1 doctor was a urologist that put kidney stents in and then the gynecologist was removing the mass and either taking a biopsy of my uterus or removing it if she felt it was necessary, which she did. Well I clearly remember a mans voice but again I couldn’t see anything, I could just hear them so I’m guessing I was just starting to come out. This was the urologist because my obgyn was a female. I heard this man laughing and making some really disgusting and inappropriate comments about my body and my genitalia. I listened as he made disgusting comments to others in the room who I either didn’t hear or who just weren’t saying anything back but I remember him saying “umm do you see that” and then I must have went back to sleep or they realized I was waking up, I’m not sure but I don’t remember anything else. When I was woke up this time I was so emotional and so upset but I didn’t say anything because I was so humiliated and too embarrassed to tell the nurses or even my husband. This is actually the 1st time I’ve told anyone about this because it was so humiliating. I just wish I’d have stood up and said something because that was almost 8 years ago now and I’m sure I probably am out of time to do something about it now. My daughters best friends mom had this same thing happen to her in the same hospital a few years ago but with a different doctor and she sued them and won her case. Maybe if I’d have stood up I could have helped prevent someone else from going through that same trauma I suffered from.

I'm pretty sure the Twilight Sleep anesthesia has been called one of the top medical horror stories, especially in the 60s and 70s. It was done a lot and usually ended pretty poorly. Sadly it's also dirt cheap so that some hospitals still use them to minimize costs. But serious doctors haven't been using those since the horror stories of the 70s.

Many people who have Ehlers Danlos Syndromes have problems with being awake, And feeling pain, the entire surgery! From the first incision to the last suture. Doctors don't generally believe this could happen, but I know many of my EDS allies have had this happen. Pain like a #20!

I've had this happen under a general too only it was very painful, I could hear but couldn't move to let them know. Twilight doesn't work at all on my I was screaming and crying the whole way through, it was really hard to keep still while they were cutting parts out of my cervix. They also told me I wouldn't remember it but I still live with the trauma. I was supposed to get it rechecked but never did due to the fear of treatment. When I had my last child my gynaecologist asked if I'd had surgery there as apparently the scarring was so bad he actually said it looked like a butcher did it. It was probably worse as I couldn't keep from squirming, but at the time they just yelled at me for moving while trying to administer more sedation, it didn't work at all and I will never forget it even though I was also told I wouldn't remember it. I've had other generals since and always tell them of the first experience I had and thankfully they have all gone smoothly since, but I've refused all twilight since and will never do that again. I feel for you as it's trauma that lasts a lifetime and makes you scared to seek future medical treatment. I had the beginning of cancer when I had the removal and am too scared to follow it up even over 20yrs later.

Here's a fun story, So my mom is a bit conservative and usually judges people based on their looks. One Sunday we were at the mall shopping and i spot a friend of mine, I greet him, have some small talk and go our sperate ways, then my mom walks up to me and says that why am i friends with him and is quite judgmental about my friend and thinks he's an Ex-con cause he has sleeve tats on both arms, she also says "do you want to be like that person?" and then i just laughed and said yes... Clearly confused my mom asks why, and i simply answer "Because he's a cardiovascular surgeon and he makes the same amount of money i make in a month in just a week of work" The lesson here kiddos, is to never judge a book by it's cover...

I agree not jumping to diagnosis, but for so many years my symptoms were ignored or overlooked. When I was finally diagnosed and given treatment for ADHD and Post-Concussive Disorder, I could actually focus and separate my thoughts for the first time in my life. It was literally life changing and instead of keeping from achieving or attempting my goals, it actually made them feel achievable. I have my MLT certification (AAS) and now pursuing my Bachelors of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS). I will be about 50 when I complete it, but would have been near impossible without diagnosis and medication.

I know I’m super late to this, but 3 things to keep in mind when seeing a psychologist (or any mental health person) 1. I know you feel awkward at the start, but just like he said, it takes time to build up your relationship with them but it’ll be worth it 2. Tell them everything that you feel comfortable with. They can’t read your mind and figure out how to help you if you don’t provide enough details 3. It’s not always going to work out the first time (as in either the doctor, or treatment), but hang in there because you’ll find one if you keep your hopes up. This is coming from a person who’s had multiple psychologists with many mental health issues (even a processing and receipting disorder). It took 5 tries to find the right psychologist for me, but I found one that I love and trust.

The question should be phrased “is it okay for doctors to have tattoos?”. Asking if doctors SHOULD have them? Well no, that would be a weird requirement. Like you go to your doctor and they have no tattoos you’re like “woah, woah. You should have tattoos, are you even a real doctor?!” 🤣🤣
@Leah-pm1nh
@Leah-pm1nh 2 жыл бұрын
I do think that it shouldn't be a requirement (because that's ridiculous) but I do hope that many of them look into them both as a culture but also medically so that they have the steps to make sure their patients are caring for new ones properly and because some tattoos have meanings that could be helpful for example a patient may not mention a history of depression but could have a ; tattoo, or something more extreme like a gang sign can be a way to gauge risks that a patient may not be as open to talking about

I woke up during a laparoscopic surgery in 2000, and I remembered it afterward too. The nurse was possibly even more upset than I was, just apologized repeatedly and went out of her way to make sure I was okay. I remember thinking I was choking or suffocating, briefly, and fighting. She said it was a breathing tube I was feeling and not comprehending, which makes sense. I now know to tell all my doctors and potential surgeons about this so they know to knock me out extra hard.

I can attest to the wearing glasses thing. I always thought my vision was fine, until I jokingly put on my friend's glasses and was amazed at the clarity I could now see in. When my Mom took us to the eye doctor (optometrist?), I discovered that I had perfectly near-sighted vision, but stuff far away looks like a blurry picture from a bad camera. Now I wear my glasses for driving and for a lot of my work as well.

Concussions can be life shattering. I'm still struggling every day to feel whole. To be a real person again. Three years later, and still I'm struggling to live a normal life again. To feel normal, to not have the haze and loss of myself. It took everything away from me.. People don't understand because they can't see the injury. I was living my childhood dreams and now I can't even approach them any more. The man I was, is gone. Lost in the accident, and finding myself again is a never ending uphill battle. Catastrophic brain injuries are extraordinarily life shattering. And I hope nobody has to go through the agony this has caused me.

That last one actually helped me quite a bit. I'm about to see my doctor about my mental health for the first time in a couple years after either getting rejected from different services (I live in the UK and was 17/18 then) or pushing away mental health professionals myself because I was too anxious to see them. I'm still too anxious now but I'm hoping it'll go better this time. I'm torn between knowing that it won't help everyone (and didn't help me at the time) but also knowing there's a chance it still could & statistically it's likely to etc. I have a completely different mindset now so maybe that'll help and I'll be more comfortable & open this time. I didn't want to see a doctor about it but my family convinced me to. I was doing well just taking care of it myself but it's been hard lately. I don't want to drop out of college for a third time either. I know no-one is reading this but for once it made me feel a little better typing it out so oh well 😅

I have rolling veins. I have a huge fear of veins and needles going into my veins. Blood draws make me sick and are my nightmares. One time I had a phlebotomist with a beautiful cardinal tattoo on her wrist. I told her how nervous I was about getting blood drawn and she was really calm and relaxing, which I appreciate so much. She tried talking to me while preparing her vampire tools but it just wasn't working for me. I asked about her cardinal tattoo and she talked about how it was dedicated to her parents the whole time she was taking my blood and I stared at the tattoo through everything. It was a gorgeous, sentimental tattoo. I just thought I'd share a positive experience with a medical profession with a tattoo since there is a stigma around it. I'll always remember her and I think of her every time I see a cardinal.

One time at an ice skating ring, there was an organized game that was basically soccer with regular shoes on ice. I slipped and landed head first, actually blacked out until I felt someone pat my shoulders to get my attention, and could barely walk. Every time someone mentions concussions I think about this- I can't even remember most of what happened, just specific sights and sensations. Painfully cold ice, vision spotted and blurry with people surrounding me, how nauseating and dizzying it was to stand- I'll have to find your video on concussions after this! They're something I want to know more about after that incident.

I actually had a paradoxical reaction to anesthesia during my surgery to remove my wisdom teeth. They were coming in completely sideways, natural braces 😂 but when I woke up, I was strapped to the table. Strap across my forehead, both arms, waist and legs. They were supposed to remove all 4 in 30 minutes. They only removed 2 in a little over an hour. I don't remember anything. But apparently from what I was told, my body was reacting to everything happening. I was screaming, apparently scared a kid in the waiting room. 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 And was physically reacting, trying to fight the doctor/dentist. Hence the straps. I ended up with a black eye and my face swollen 2-3 times it's normal size. And couldn't eat solid foods for 2-3 weeks. Especially the first week it was basically, sleep, wake up to tinkle 😂 take more pain meds, have a snow cone(all I could physically and mentally stomach) and back to sleep and repeat. Needless to say I went to a different dentist to remove the other 2 😂

I grew up in a small town on the Washington State Coast. The one and only surgery I have ever had was "day surgery" for carpal tunnel due to the kind of work I did at the time. Well, my surgeon was absolutely fantastic. I have zero scars on either wrist. He's well respected in the area and is known as the "hand expert" because he often does hand surgery but is an orthopedic surgeon and can do any type that is needed. When I got my first wrist done, I was not completely "out" under general anesthesia. I heard the surgeon talking to his staff during the surgery about the next case that was coming after me. Turns out it is a girl I know (I know her whole family, actually) who messed up her ankle really bad after falling down stairs. Pretty sure I wasn't supposed to hear all of that, LOL. The second wrist he knocked me completely out. I don't remember ANYTHING until I woke up. 😂

I've had two cases where I've still felt pain through local anesthetic. Once with something at the dentist and once with having an ingrown toenail removed. So I guess I probably have some resistance to it. Either that or it was nocebo (placebo but the effect is pain).

I almost woke up during surgery once. I was around 8 or 9 and I had broken my elbow. But a piece of the bone had moved to another place in my arm so I had to have surgery. Something went wrong and it took al lot longer than planned. When they saw that the anesthesia was wearing off, they just gave me some more. I don't remember if I really regained consciousness but that's what the doctors said to me.

I've been put under for surgery several times in my life. I ALWAYS wake up. I warn my doctors that it is going to happen. I never really feel like they believe me. during my last surgery, it was luckily a non-invasive surgery with minimal pain, I remember waking up and saying "morning doc. anything I can do to help?" After the surgery, he told me that nothing had ever surprised him or made him laugh during surgery more than that. the first time I had surgery I was 7, and I had a VERY bad arm break, they had to Re-break my elbow to get it back in place so they could pin it back together, I woke up mid-break. breaking your arm hurts, waking up feeling your arm being broken back and forth to realign everything, and hearing the surgeons panic and shout "is he awake?" after you start screaming... even worse. My brain doesn't like to relinquish control. Similar to psychological studies of people being under the effects of morphine and mentally nullifying the effects of the drug; that's what my brain does with Propofol (the drug they give you to put you under). My brain just wrestles control back somehow and just jumpstarts itself. I don't know how it happens, the doctors are always a little baffled, but it happens. and it sucks every time.

About doctors with tattoos: there's another side to that doctor-patient relationship for patients who have tattoos themselves! It might be heartening to have a doctor who also has tattoos in visible places, I know I would feel validation seeing that

Hey, thank you for that!! I'm a recently graduated doctor and I have a recent tattoo on my wrist. Feels good to hear stuff like that, I'm always a bit concerned about it. But I know it's my body and it was my decision to do it, so it doesn't matter if others don't like it. But thanks for the positivity!! 🥰

I definitely remember waking up during my kidney transplant. It was rough, but not as traumatizing these days compared to 8 years ago when it happened. I wonder if it's because we don't remember events with 100% accuracy, especially if the brain tries to repress it.
