I had a teacher years ago who took me out to a (much gentler landscape!) trail one moonlit night. She and I walked those woods many times, until we could do it at dark of the moon. That was amazing to learn to trust my non-visual senses. 10 miles in the dark! Wow, Awesome, mountain man!

O Yikes!!!! I got nervous just 3 minutes in. Didn’t even know if I could finish this 😋. So many things to encounter when alone and the drop offs made it even more tense. And the light gives out!!!!! You are right, Cory, spooky. Ten miles is amazing for a guy who had trouble with one mile a few months ago. What a journey. Be blessed. Be safe.

Congratulations on the night hike! Did my first solo night climb of the South Sister in August so I could do a dawn summit. I love summiting mountains at dawn! Most interesting critter I have found in the dark was a Northwest forest scorpion, hiking out after climbing Table Mountain, just North of Cascade Locks on the PCT. They really only come out at night, but I have heard other trail crew people say the have found them while moving rocks working on the trail. Their venom is apparently not very strong.

Another nice video. My wife "Oliveoil" bought those boots around 4 months ago and she has a problem with the hard plastic support that rubs against her outer ankle. It bruised it and hurts her. You might want to see if that is the case and return them if they don't work. I use the same boot as your buddy Jon King at San Jacinto. Keene Targhee 2 mid high boot water proof. I've used them for a few years and have had no problems. My wife is going to go back to those. I hope you find Little Bee so she chews you out for night hiking (kidding).

Im afraid of the cougars who hunt at night. Which is only one reason why I don’t do it. Go get em!!
@TJStellmach
@TJStellmach 5 жыл бұрын
Although cougars are relatively dangerous as North American predators go, attacks on humans are still rare in absolute terms, and Washington has had only one fatal encounter in the last 95 years (which tells you when the previous one was). Your feelings don't have to be rational, though, and you should do what you're comfortable with. A cougar attack is a scary thought.

@Valerie from Oregon Two separate attacks leading to deaths! One in North Bend WA May 18, 2018, 2 male mountain bikers were attacked, one got away and the other was mauled to death and partially eaten by cougar (also called Mountain Lion here in NW) and the Mt. Hood OR attack occured Sept 11, 2018 involved a female hiker who was mauled and died from injuries.

I have limited depth perception, an overactive imagination, and an atavistic fear of the dark. Night hiking *IS* crazy. ;-) Last year, I did a 12-hour overnight race to test myself. Yep - my brain went NUTS. I won't night hike unless I absolutely have to. I am not a nocturnal creature and it really shows.

@anhatur 5 жыл бұрын
The Editor now has a fan club. I have been wondering, and while somewhat confused that's still plenty reason to realize what a huge job you do. About the toads and the snakes, the ground always keep a few degrees above freezing, at least if it's not permafrost. The top layer may freeze if there's no snow, but deeper down it's still somewhat warm so these animals burrow, or hide the deepest they can. When the snow comes, and especially when it gets thick, it forms an insulating blanket and the ground thaws all the way up to the snow. So that the rest of the winter, the ground keeps a degree or two above freezing, slowly melting away at the bottom layer of the snow. (And this melting, and sometimes the snow gets cold enough to freeze again, then melt and leave steam that freezes again on the upper layers of the snow and so on, is what creates old, rough snow.) But anyways, the coldest season for these critters is before the snow settles in. And in dry winter, when little or no snow comes, it's time for crisis. And one more thing, Cory. Learn to set your headlamp to below maximum level when theres's not something special you look at (such as filming). The batteries should last all night, then.

Chinook Pass is beautiful. You will miss the beauty if you hike it at night. I wouldn't recommend hiking it at night. Some very steep sections. Frankly, I wouldn't drive through it at night either. Winding road, boulders falling, and steep slopes/drop offs.

Mountain Lions are the only thing I worry about. I had a Bengal cat. 15 lbs. he could tear you a new butt. So a 150 lb cat could kill you very easy. Many people have gone missing. I believe a lot of them have been killed by large cats.

OK, so I'm confused here. The only reasons I can think of to hike at night is to avoid desert heat or some impending deadline like an oncoming snow storm or a rendezvous or just making up miles. Why would you want to miss the beauty of the of the Chinook Pass area and risk injury to hike in the dark.

I hear you. Try to look at it from my side too. Imagine 235 days hiking and living like a homeless person. I also was lonely and depressed. No other pct hiker has been out there so long and they are all going crazy wanted to be done after 120-150 days. Most hikers quit the first 700 miles. 100 pounds down, feel super healthy, have a girlfriend, I think I deserve a break from just focusing on hiking? I get a lot of people are watching me for hiking but it’s just not realistic to live on the trail forever on the ground as a homeless person.
