It sounds like my experience with the first one: gorgeous art with levels that vary from fun to serviceable, fun gunplay, but enough flaws that I only played it through once. Which means I'll definitely buy this at some point, but probably on sale

I didn't even notice the cool art at first, I just saw that Second Wind put out a new Bytesized and was like "Oh cool! A new Bytesized! What game is it about?"😅

I'll probably get into Forgive Me Daddy 2 after I'm done with Dread Delusion. I thought the first was pretty neat, and from the sounds of it, 2's an improvement.

My main issue is that enemies are insanely accurate which is fine in most levels but in the dark ones or the one mentioned with the mushrooms just annoying trying to find who is hitting you. Other than that, I would love some different skins for enemies in different areas. Like the WW1 like trenches should have period inspired soldiers, or the pyramid style one should have Egyptian inspired enemies. Stuff like that.

I had a lot of issues with FMF1. So many that, once I was finished, I did not recommend it in my Steam Review, which Byte Barrel replied to (they were responding to negative critique). I was hoping they'd really improve things but I'm beginning to think they didn't change as much as I'd hoped. At least I enjoyed the boss battles, iirc. And I am glad to see they ditched that stupid second character... the reporter was a pointless addition, I get the impression they added her in late development. The game is titled Forgive Me Father, why wouldn't the main character be a priest? It just watered the game down not sticking to the one character.

Actually didnt notice the art style so much, but that i missed this bytesized review! But golly the art style of this game does make me wanna play it even though i dont play FPs games.

Reminds me heavily of the game Project Warlock with similar visual style (2d 3d), fast paced shooter, with magical powerups that change each run through. If you liked Forgive me Father, you might enjoy this as well.

Yes, clicked for the art, but got intrigued by the boomer shooty gameplay and the described heavy metal soundtrack.

With regards to the ammo problem, I wonder if they could implement something similar to what id software did with DOOM where there were only 3 ammo pools that all of the weapons would draw from.

I think there's interesting ways to go with surreal / cosmic horror rather than this, I feel like the same lovecraft kind of thing is being rehashed like crazy rn. Lovecraft started it, we can innovate on the general feel / theme without repeating endlessly.

Hard to compare this with Cultic - all about gameplay with pretty raw graphic, FMF2 all about style with barebone gameplay, still fun but could be so much more...

I do have a disagreement with this review, as enemies / ammo are easy to distinguish from one another in the heat of combat. Forgive Me Father 2 is also easier overall on its highest difficulty compared to the first entry in the franchise by a noticeable margin.

Nah. I clicked because I have been playing through Forgive me Father 1 this year, and already have 2 from a humble bundle and was interested to know if its an improvemt now that it's out of early access. I think the first game is great- it reminds me of good FPS' from the 90s. Like Doom, Blood, Heretic, or even later in the early 2000s Painkiller. If you like Painkiller and HP Lovecraft like lore I recommend it. It's a fun game. Better than all these lame call of duty shooting galleries with cutscenes people constantly buy to ignore the single player and play the multiplayer (some of them are good- I'm being hyperbolic). Or that really bad game that uses the Doom name but isn't Doom (Doom Eternal is not a Doom game its a bad indie puzzle platformer). Sounds like this one is good too. Its weird that good first person shooters are a niche genre now, but I guess that's where we're at. 🤷‍♂️

I enjoy these videos, but you always seem to review expensive games. Well, expensive for me. Any chance Second Wing might consider a series of videos that specialized on discount game? Under ten bucks, or even under five? Or is there some aspect to the business model that requires only reviewing expensive games? No clue...

The bytesized reviews are generally of relatively newly released games, so even among cheaper indies they probably aren't hitting the sub-$10 discounts yet. Back on the Escapist they had a similar series called 3 Minute Review going back a few years, watching older videos you'll probably find ones that have steeper discounts available, particularly during Steam sales (while new bytesized episodes can be more for wishlisting any that appeal to you to wait for them to fall into your preferred price range after a bit).
