This is Eden Rock, one of the best climbing walls in England
But it has 1 star reviews
Matthew Barrington said
“it is the worst climbing gym I’ve ever been to...if travelling avoid at all costs…Get yourself to Depot Manchester”
What does Matthew Barrington know that we don’t?
I really like Eden Rock
But does that make Depot Manchester a super gym?
Well I travelled over 100 miles to find out
My first impression was that it is nice and clean and has lots of problems to try
But they grade on colour and the red ones are v2 to v5
Which whilst the problems were fun it meant I spent the majority of session climbing below my limit
So I was confused by Matthew Barrington’s review
That was until I found this secret bouldering room
Shh…Don’t tell anyone
And these climbs were some of the best I’ve tried
They were super fun and flowey and you could use lots of different techniques to solve them
And it made me feel like Tomoa Narasaki
So I thought I’d try some boulders from a recent competition
And quickly realised I’m not

Reds are V3-V5, pinks are V2-V5. A big range, but each colour generally uses similar holds and each colour seems to focus on different technique. In this set that you've climbed, there are a few reds that are genuinely hard (e.g. on the right side of 0:28). The comp wall is fun, there are two variants. The one in the "secret room" is the easier one, the one on the right before the entrance to the "secret room" is the hard comp.

Thanks, the grade poster was pretty confusing and I must have mistaken pink for red.

You discovered the comp room. Depot manny is a pretty soft gym from my experience, but a great centre with loads of training facilities and blocs.

V2 to v5 feels psychotic as a grading band lol

As a beginner that can only handle v2-v3 that’s terrifying

@@frankiecosenza7174 I set at the depot. Personally I think the whole "each colour is a band of grades" isn't great. I get why we do it but it's not good. Another issue with how we just use one colour is each colour kind of has a theme of what type of holes there are. So as someone goes though the grey boundaries they suddenly sit in county and completely different whole type when they go onto the next Grade band. So rather than being introduced to certain types of holes or textures at a lower grade on an easy climb that just hit full force with them at a higher grade. With that said I think having the occasional wide grade ranges a good thing because it gets new requirements to actually try things that are way above their ability. That's how you get that ability

@@supernoodles908I regularly climb at multiple depots and what your saying about holds in grade bands simply isn't true. Yes clearly the higher grades have more difficult holds but the lower circuits have great variety too, I climb at many other gyms where the lower grades are just boring jug ladders and you'll never see a sloper until v5 or so... That's not the case at the 3 depots I regularly visit.

@@frankiecosenza7174I get that if it's the only band that has V2 in it but the bands start much lower. V1-V3 V2-V4 V2-V5 V3-V5 are the first 4 bands so as you can see there is plenty to go at for a V2-V3 climber.

My main problem with the depot is that they always use the same holds to set at the same grades. You don't get a good variety of different styles in the same grade this way

I’m a local at Depot Manchester. Overall a great gym, especially as a student - specifically for Comp-style and Training. Setting is fun and in general inventive However. They set via colour, meaning that you never really get to experience different types of holds - so trying to push to the next grade can feel really difficult as for example the hold used on the hardest grade (orange) are ONLY ever used for orange. Furthermore I would say the Plateu grade for a lot of people (purple) is further damaged by this, as these holds very quickly become slippy, overchalked and dometimes rarely unusable. This is a specific problem with footholds in particular. Food is great and you get so much bang for your buck their.

Vast majority of Depot's are just generic, clinical walls, that rely on students using them as pick-up spots for dating. 😂 They're as close to a real gym, as mcdonalds is to a real restaurant. Only exception being the real OG Pudsey. Thats a damn good gym.

As someone who is genuinely curious, is 100miles a large distance in the UK? Roughly how far would that distance be in terms of the entire UK?
@Charlie_Finnie
@Charlie_Finnie Ай бұрын
Yeah, I think most people don't travel long distances frequently. I live close to Scotland and it's 300 miles to London. I lived in Australia and your next town could be 300 miles whereas the majority of the UK's population live between me and London.
