Totally agree. I'm always as courteous as I can be to truckers on the road, and try not to be in their way at a rest area as well. But some don't have space for 50 feet of truck and trailer that's not in the "truck parking" area - or like so often happens, the "cars with trailers" area is full of SUV's not towing anything but need to let the dog out in grass. But I've as much right to a parking space as any truck does; this "hardworking hero" stuff is nonsense. Or maybe we need to talk about the semi's in the left lane taking 5 - 7 minutes to finally pass another semi going MAYBE a single MPH slower than they are?

Courtesy IS safety! With a 42’ bus pulling a Jeep, I stay right lane at 55-60 mph, flash lights when a big rig is vectoring into my lane and remain a chilled out old dude when it’s heavy traffic. Helps me maximize my time on the planet. I do love my air horns for dumb cars that cut me off, but thankfully that’s a rare exception. Happy trails!

I'm a retired trucker of over 30 years and a fulltime rver now, and feel I have earned the right to say this. Sure I have respect on the road for everyone but since I've gotten older and my eye sight at night is not as sharp as it used to be so I limit myself to daylight driving. So this puts me on a limited scheduled. Sure I always have a backup plan for the day. Here's we may disagree a little, when I have to fuel in the truck lanes and drivers not fueling or finished block the isles up and hold me up an hour. Then I'm traveling down the road and a 65.5 mph governed truck passes me only to lose 10mph on the next upgrade, I either have to see-saw with him or pass only to get to the next downgrade so he can fly buy me. It only take a few times of this "one year wonder" doing this before I'm irritated. I show respect but everything has it's limits. I have to speed up 10mph for several miles to get away from him or he could just back out of down one hill and I would be gone. If he did that we both would be safer.

I spent a good portion of my life as an over-the-road driver, growing up on the road with my father. Through those experiences, I learned the importance of respecting fellow drivers, especially truckers, as I was one myself. I've tried to uphold the old-school values on the road, but I've noticed that newer drivers often don't operate with the same principles. After being stepped on one too many times, it becomes challenging to maintain that courteous approach with everyone

I am a retired truck driver and now travel as a hobby. I am always respectful of other drivers, but these new generation truck drivers that tail gate me really piss me off! I only drive at 65 mph and the speed limit is 75 mph and they are mad and do road rage and tail gate then pass and either short pass and try and run you off the road or drop into the edge of road after passing throw up rocks. Truckers and other cars think when a speed limit sign say 75 mph you have to go 75 mph. they do not under stand the word LIMIT means on the sign. To many drivers drive like the movie Mad Max!!!!

Only an asshole is going to cut me off to get behind a big truck. The assholes are German imports, (New Yorkers) who are tailgating the SUV in front of them, cut me off, then can’t get back over because the vehicles that were behind them, bunch up.

DW and I started full-timing a few months before truckers all had to use electronic log books. With their deadline, congestion at all truck parking got really bad. After that, we’ve tried to never park where trucks can park, or more to the point anywhere we might be taking a trucker’s space. As far as free parking, there are a lot of places RVs can park that trucks can’t, so it’s easy enough to go to those places. (That said, we’ve been in a place or two where the truckstop was the only option, and we just tried to be good neighbors while we parked among the trucks.)

I agree with you on every point. Life on the road would be much better / easier if everyone observed the same courtesies. However, with that being said as a truck driver (now retired) for over 40 years, I've observed the quality and professionalism of truck drivers over the last 2-3 decades has severely declined, ( I do feel sorry for the many good ones ) to the point where I feel that a great many do not deserve much respect on the road. "But" with that being said, as a professional driver that does respect my fellow road users and for our own conscience and road safety for all, we all have to remember to be a better person on the road and give the commercial traffic a wide berth and let them do their job (however poorly they may do do it). And remember "NO ONE WINS" when "ROAD RAGE" enters into the picture.

What is your answer about where RV's are supposed to go? You alluded to you just "moving on" if the rest area is getting full. I am a full time RVer and have spent many nights in rest areas on travel days. In many states, such as the east coast of Florida, you cannot just park over at the Walmart for the night. It's illegal. In some areas, the rest areas are the only places to stop for many miles. In most states, the signs indicate cars in one direction, trucks, trucks with trailers and RV's in the other direction meaning they expect RVs to be there. Furthermore some of states even have dump stations in the rest areas, making me believe they actually want RVs to feel welcome there. In a perfect world, we'd have rest areas just for RVs, and some states do (which often fill up with trucks by midnight) and rest areas just for trucks. We don't live in that world. We have rest areas for use by all people traveling down the road who need rest. Thanks for your videos, Joe.
@RVingWithJoe
@RVingWithJoe Ай бұрын
There is no perfect answer here. I can show you a Rest Area in Washington state that has dump stations but no RVs are allowed to park AT ALL otherwise. As Homelessness has grown with RVs, RVers are getting squeezed aon all sides but truckers are getting squeezed HARDER. For most, its Recreation not work, so I feel like we need to keep that context but I discussed something about the problem you pointed out with this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXyWpmSpaqeDj68 Also iOverlander has beena great supplement so we can boondock more while traveling and avoid the rest areas. When you need to stop at a rest area, do what you need to do. Also I have taken lately to pulling into the car areas overnigth since those are less used at the larger rest areas.

As an RV’r, I drive 60-65 for the better fuel mileage so I keep an eye on the mirrors and pull over to let traffic pass. As a Paramedic, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been running lights and siren stuck behind an RV that can’t see me because of inadequate mirrors, and if they do see me, WON’T pull over. You’d think the oncoming cars pulling onto the shoulder trying to give us room to pass would be a clue. Yet, they’ll give US the stink eye or even flip us off when we eventually manage to pass.

Joe, you have brought up some good points. As a former RV Hauler I was considered a commercial driver and had to abide by the same DOT regulations that semi trucks have to adhere to. While most truck stops were accommodating I had several that were either had to park at or did not allow for RV parking at all. Our company policy stated that we were not allowed to park in the lots with the semis. When I was towing I always had and my DOT placards. At first I did not display them when bob tailing, did learn it was best just to leave them on all the time.

Absolutely agree. One issue (or actually two issues) not addressed is staying in the right lane unless passing. On an Interstate within a city, it is better to stay in the second lane even if you are slower as there is this nasty road design of suddenly finding you are now in a exit only lane and have to maneuver to the second lane in traffic with a long vehicle. Closely related is pay attention to your map and if GPS indicates will exit to the left in a mile, you need to be convenient to the center lane for the relatively rare left exit.
@RVingWithJoe
@RVingWithJoe Ай бұрын
Yes if you watch my recent Seattle video, you can see where I had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the left exit and it was backed up onto the freeway while the rest of the lanes were going full speed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHexnIRulrWAaq8si=S05JyB4zNwAJwIUC&t=120

I'm of a similar mind, particularly in rest stops. I park my trailer so the back is at the leading edge of a parking space, so it is clear that the space is occupied. Otherwise a driver might plan to park in a space that looks avaliable. Also, if I'm planning to us1e my trailer's bathroom, I'll choose a space we'll away from the facility's restrooms. One more - i try to find a space at the right-hand end of a row, if i plan to open my slides.

Good perspective, Joe. I try to consider myself as a guest when I am traveling into and through a community or city. Manners matter. I have also been an over the road trucker. The hours of service rules have changed drastically in recent years, creating a demand for parking that is unmanageable. Mant truck stops now charge for commercial vehicles to park for their required time off. Some truck stops offer permanently reserved spaces for regular customers on a more fixed route and schedule. I avoid rest areas and truck stops because I am a "guest" on the road, even though they are "my" roads too. Consider this as if you were visiting family or friends at their employer's location. Would you go into the employee lounge, lay down on the couch after emptying the coffee pot so you could relax in their space? Just a thought.

Just yesterday a fifth wheeler pulled out in front of a half dozen vehicles forcing them to brake hard so that the fifth wheeler could be right up close with his companion fifth wheeler who’d already made it out of the Walmart parking lot. Just plain rude… Just my own opinion, I feel the more 18 wheelers taken off the roads the better it’ll be for everyone. Railroads built this country, put containers on truck trains and clear the roads. One single truck train can easily hold 200 containers. A two man rail crew to move 200 containers as opposed to 200 truck drivers, it’s an easy decision. Trucks shouldn’t drive more than 1000 miles, at that point it’s time to put it up on a train.

Us truckers live on the road Me I'm out on the road for 28 days a month before I go home to my AirStream Truck drivers can only work 14 hrs from the time we start We can only drive 11 hours in that 14 hrs In then at 3 hour window We have to get fuel that's 30 to 40 minutes Eat shower and a 30 mandatory break It can take anywhere from 45 to 6 hrs to get loaded or unloaded My longest load time was 28 1/2 hours picking up a load of chicken 🍗 🍗 We get paid by mileage We work 70 hrs a week But really we work over 100 hours if you know how to work your log books lol Unlike RVs we cannot pull into a Malls Walmart Target 🎯 grocery stores parking lot for the night like you can So our time is short we need every minute to be rolling to make money 💰💰

I am a retired truck driver and yes that is all true But old school trucker were in it for the job not the money per say! Today truckers are in it for the money and have destroyed the industry like driving like crazy people for making as much money as the can.

@Rory235 well there's some truth in that the problem is Today's companies are charging less per mile and loads Even though the cost of shipping has gone up I've gone from $0.70 cents a mile To barely find a company that can pay more than $0.55 a mile That's a big pay cut
@vDRACv
@vDRACv Ай бұрын
@@Rory235 truthfully money is not the issue why these drivers are being like they are today Companies are no longer training truck drivers They want steering wheel holders My last truck drove itself I just had to have my hands on the steering wheel Today's trucks got too much technology in it A truck brakes for no reason They will actually pick up speed for no reason with the driver assist engage So the drivers don't have the skills to be a truck driver anymore Steering wheel holders can be replace easily

As we travel, I stay in the right lane rolling between 60-65 MPH while towing our trailer. Faster than that single axel trailer not happy. When it comes to rest stops, I'll go where the signage sends me. But we never abuse our time there, so others can use that space too.

I drive a large rv (60 foot) that only fits where the big rigs fit. If I stop for fuel at a truck stop, I should be able to rest at their parking lot. I am a paying customer. I think they would rather that than a tired driver on the road. Courtesy goes both ways.

I agree with pulling over for all vehicles you are leading, especially truckers and its relieves stress too. I disagree with rest-stops, which are intended for ALL drivers (read “taxpayers”) . Everybody need to sleep equally.
@RVingWithJoe
@RVingWithJoe Ай бұрын
I still use them, I just try to avoid taking the last spaces or I will park overnight in the car area to give them space. The intention is not that they are for everyone to sleep at, even though we do, but for truckers they have to legally stop that long. Some Rest Areas in Washington have 11 hour overnight allowance for commercial drivers but only 2 hours for others, discouraging camping.

In my opinion, RVers should not take up space in a truck stop parking area. The fact of the matter is that there are not enough spaces for truckers to safely get off the road and for an RVer to take up one, again my opinion, is wrong. When I see truckers out along highways or on/off ramps, their safety is in serious question. Truckers are the lifeblood of our economy and to deny them the privilege of a safe slot at a truck stop is wrong. As I have said twice - this is my opinion. Don't bother trying to change my mind.
@RVingWithJoe
@RVingWithJoe Ай бұрын
There needs to be more free parking options for trucks too. Like some of the comments below, truckers are saying many of the truck stops are charging now.

I have a diesel pickup pulling my travel trailer, and purchase my fuel at the diesel islands. Much easier for all involved for me to get my fuel, pull to a parking spot, get to the toilet in the trailer, and be gone. Plus, my wife has mobility issues, so it is easier for her to use our travel trailer toilet, rather than trying to maneuver through a busy truck parking lot. We are never spending more than 20-30 minutes at a truck stop. Everyone's situation is different, so common courtesy IS a two way transaction.

Disagree. When I'm driving for work, I get paid by the hour, I am relaxed and chill. Traffic jam equals more pay. When I'm on vacation, that is my time, you get in my way when I'm on vacation, there better be a great reason. I have many more hours to work in a year than vacation.
