What a fantastic place! It's a magical place for me as a human; the tortoises must think they're royalty living in the best palace in the world. And it's encouraging that there are committed humans all over the world willing to take responsibility for these animals.

In addition to leafy greens & dry grasses I’ve always fed my tortoises/semi-terrestrial turtles either whole or very large chunks of veggies (squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc.) Working for their food keeps their beaks nice and trim. Certain individuals also enjoy chewing on cuttlebone (sold for pet birds.) I occasionally add pulverized egg shells (chicken eggs) for add’l calcium so their shells grow smoothly.

This is incredibly inspiring. I only have 10 Leopard and 10 Speke's Hinge-back rescues in their native Kenya (severe carapace damage and/or habitat loss, they can't go back), but I want to be part of a network like this.

When I was three months old, my mother bought a ‘greek’ tortoise. It was in Denmark in the 70’. Rasmus lived for 27 years, roaming the expanse of our appartment. In the summer she was outside every day. I always wondered what species she was, and I look for similarities in your videos. The whitey eyed tortoise looked exactly like Rasmus, except for the markings on the shield. Looking at the head and the legs was exactly like looking at Rasmus, and now I’m crying, because she was a big part of my life. Is there another tortoise like this one, but with a more uniform colour on the shield?

Eleanor’s page has been amazing advice for naturalistic enclosures over here in the UK. I use the foiled bubble wrap (used for behind radiators) to help hold heat and humidity in, just like the bubble wrap roofing in this post which has been so helpful especially this year when the mornings are weirdly still too cold for my western Hermann’s so he starts his day indoors and then goes outside when the sun has warmed up. I have to start weeds and grasses off in seed trays with added calcium d3 powder mixed in and then transplant them into his enclosures when they are more established otherwise Mr Pebble mows them down within a few hours 😁 I’m so glad you got to come over here and there will be no way I’m missing you guys again when you come back again 🤞🏻🤗

Will turtles naturally seek out calcium deposits in their native habitats the way some species seek out minerals from dirt and salt from salt deposits? When I kept aquariums, I added calcium/mineral tablets called "Mineral Junkie" specifically made for freshwater snails, shrimp, and crabs. Their shells need more calcium than is available in softer water.

I'm still amazed by the gorgeous shells. They are all so nice and rounded. Hardly any pyramiding at all.

Another one Coool I know when you make KZbin videos and Sundays Sundays were the best and the worse the school comes!💀
@Shaden00406 ай бұрын
one way to add calcium for tortoises is to find cuddle bone and on the beaches of England they appear quite often so if somebody wanted to collect cuddle bone and donate it to this facility I'm sure they would be grateful! and of course you can always break up the cuddle bone and bury some of it Which will help add to the calcium enrichment in the soil. and it's all natural period now I would think that parts of England would have plenty of calcium in the soil since they have a lot of chalk deposits but maybe it's not water soluble and not able to be incorporated into the plants although any acidic rain would probably break that down fairly quickly I would think.
@Jill-K6 ай бұрын
One thing I've learnt from your videos is cute as they may be, unless your willing to donate a lot of time and care you should not be getting these as pets. They're beautiful and deserve the attention.
