The State Fair of Virginia will be moving to their new Caroline County facility in 2009.
It is fitting that Rainaway will live there, as the Meadow was the birthplace of Secretariat.

American Pharaoh was Secretariat's great-great-great-grandson, and Justify was his great-great-great-great grandson. Both won the Triple Crown, not with the times of their ancestor, but still a noteworthy thing. It's good to know he has descendants out there who do their best to live up to his legacy.

@@tamaragonzalez2227 You don't seem to understand basic genetics/breeding. Both Terlingua and Weekend Surprise were daughters of the great Secretariat. Both birthed legacy sires, Storm Cat and A.P Indy. Both are great great great grandmothers of Justify and therefore inbred to Secretariat 5 generations back. A simple search would have sufficed. Many horses are inbred 5 and 6 generations back to Secretariat or his father Bold Ruler. You also frequently see this happen with Northern Dancer.

Thank you for sharing this video, I never tire of listening to stories about Secretariat. My brother and I did a road trip just to see him. He had just retired. I wasn't sure where the farm was so we stopped at a Dairy Queen for directions. The owner was outside showing interest in my brothers truck and he apparently had a family member from the same town, we got to talking and he told us that the farm was closed to visitors because someone threw a rock at Secretariat. I thought I would cry it was so sad. He said he knew someone on the farm. He made a phone call and gave us directions and we drove there where the gentleman gave us a tour of the stables where we saw many great horses. We than went to his paddock and there he was. He was still muscled up and looked gorgeous, very gentle. He had been rolling in the mud and the farm hand pulled out some hairs from his forelock and gave it to me. We took lots of pictures. Secretariat always had his ears forward when he saw a camera. This plus watching the 1973 Belmont was the best experience of my life. Well I did have a son which was truly the best. I hope this isn't too boring.

I loved your story! I watch all his races many times!! I truly think Secretariat is the greatest horse ever created and I hope no horse ever breaks his triple crown record! I'm from Canada and I've always been proud that his jockey was Canadian and maybe his trainer too. Thank you for sharing your story. By the way his last race was in Toronto and it was a miserable cold rainy day. I've regretted all my life not going to see him when he was close to where I lived.

@@donnamcmillan6950 Enjoyed your post Donna. And Secretariat’s trainer was indeed Canadian: Lucien Laurin, who was French Canadian like jockey Ron Turcotte. Laurin’s comments after Secretariat’s races were memorably vibrant & witty. I recently googled to see whether he wrote any memoirs, because I’m sure they’d be interesting & humorous reads. It seems that he didn’t; at least, there was no mention of any in the few results that popped up about Laurin’s life after his Riva Ridge & Secretariat years. Ah well…

I’ve rode one of Secretariat’s great grandson who’s name ironically was Racer. He is a paint Thoroughbred mix that is slow when galloping but is probably the sweetest horse I’ve rode in my life. I’ve also met one of Secretariat’s other great grandson who was an OTTB who was also a sweetheart.

Secretariat IS the greatest racehorse in the history of mankind. He is a legend and he will be remembered through generations to come. There is no horse that has every beaten his records on the racetrack, and that is fact. He is the great great great granddaddy of my lovely horse that I unfortunately lost in 2007.

Presumably you are presumably talking about Secretariat's stakes records for the Triple Crown events, which still stand -- but it is NOT fact that no horse has ever beaten any of Secretariat's records. Several have been broken. His Pimlico track record for 1 3/16 miles was broken by Farma Way in 1991. His stakes record for the Gotham Stakes, which also equaled the Aqueduct track record for a mile, was broken by Easy Goer in 1989.

I also owned a granddaughter and her son. They were great Western Pleasure horses who went back to First Secretary...the first foal that Secretariat foaled.

A few months ago I was at Keeneland in Kentucky watching the race horses excersize (they let you go and watch very early in the morning). I was the only person there and a jockey stopped on the fence to talk to me while he let his horse take a quick break! I found out that the gorgeous stallion was Apart, who is far from famous but is Secretariat's grandson. He could fly! I even got to pet his neck a little (although he didn't like it so I stopped ;)) It was incredible.

Secretariat was the Greatest, Fastest Horse that ever has raced. I will never forget him,& the day that Secretariat ran off,& left the whole field of horses way behind. It was like Secretariat was the only horse in the race. He like opened up the gate at full throttle that no other horse has seen before. It was Amazing to see him in my lifetime. There’s truly only ONE SECRETARIAT HORSE THAT COULD’T BE BEAT TIL THIS DAY!! ❤❤❤

His bloodlines as well as his dam's continue to spread to this day, and the strength of that gene line will continue. As we've learned, he had that oversized heart - I don't think we will ever see that again. That said, part of his success was his ability (and his mother was same way), to communicate and understand. That can't be taught, but I would expect exists in most of his and his mother's bloodlines.

I saw Border run race at Santa Anita! Twice. He will be in the Calendar. The first time I saw him, his last race line in the racing form comments said : whipped, bucked! 😁🤣😂, god bless him, and his greatest of the great dad. 👍

@@conniewolf7300 When Border Run came out of the starting gate his jockey hit him with the whip and Border Run started bucking in response to being hit with the whip, instead of running around the track. Which I'm sure the jockey was just trying to keep from getting bucked off at that point. There's been other horses over the years, that were like that, they would quit running if you whipped them, and/or start bucking as well. One of them was Nashua. Who by the way, was closely related to Secretariat. Bold Ruler, Secretariat's sire, was by the same sire, Nasrullah, making Bold Ruler and Nashua half brothers. Therefore Border Run is closely related to Nashua as well. Kind of interesting, Nasrullah was a very bad tempered, high strung horse, he hated men, ( but tolerated women). Many of Nasrullah's progeny and descendents inherited his temperament. Including Border Run, apparently.

I have a Secretariat great grandson rescue, Miester Goodwrench. He was hit by a car and taken to a feed lot. A little hill work a good trim and lots of groceries and he looks amazing. He is a bumpy ride with his gimpy leg but he raised my stud colt until he was 3 with a firm but fair disposition and he can still outrun my other horses when they play chase in the arena.

Secretariat sired over 900 foals during his time, and many of those were bred to have foals of their own, so there are actually many descendants of this legend, my 2 horses included :)

@@richardgrace4500 Rose Barnwell's number is, roughly, correct. Secretariat stood at stud for 16 seasons, breeding approximately 40 mares per year, as was then the norm. Per American Classic Pedigrees online site, entry for Secretariat: "According to Jockey Club records, Secretariat sired 341 winners (51.4%) and 54 stakes winners (8.1%) from 663 named foals." This info is also found in Secretariat's Wikipedia entry, and elsewhere on the Web. A quick glance at his progeny listing on pedigree.com makes clear he sired far more than 250 foals. An online People article from 1988 says Secretariat had sired 453 foals, but he was still actively breeding at that time. I have no idea where you got your far-too-low number, or where Tootsie Salham got her inflated number. But 900 is closer to 663 than 250 is.

@E W Lol. You think that's a lot? Bigshot studs these days cover many more mares than the roughly 40 of Secretariat's era. Recent Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify, both of whom stand stud for Ashford Stud, cover 170-200 mares at Ashford in Kentucky, and then in Australia another 75 or so. They are "shuttle stallions," horses who are shipped back and forth for separate breeding seasons in the northern and southern hemispheres. Some other prominent stallions like Tapit and Madaglia d'Oro cover about 140 mares a year. There was talk a year or so ago of the U.S. Jockey Club limiting stallions to 140 breedings per year. Not sure what became of that proposal.

yeah but you'd get better foals if you breed through his daughters and granddaughters because the genetic for the enlarged heart that made him so spectacular is carried in the x chromosome.Ironically this means that his greatness did not come from his sire Bold Ruler.

Secretariat's greatness came not only from the large heart but speed also. Bold Ruler gave Secretariat his speed, the large heart gave him endurance. So Bold Ruler's 50% WAS needed to break all the track records.

I don't see a whole lot of resemblance to Secretariat. "Big Red" was obviously a different color. Love the name "Rainaway". He is a beautiful horse. Take good care of him. He is of ROYALTY. I was in high school when Big Red won the '73 Triple Crown. I watched all three races live on TV. I have been a huge Secretariat fan and huge horseracing fan in-general, for most of my life. Secretariat was the greatest racehorse EVER. Period.

Not all that different in color. They're both bright chestnuts. Rainaway does look lighter/less coppery (maybe more like Affirmed than Secretariat?) but that could be a matter of lighting.
