Shaq's beef with Dwight is one of the more indefensible mud slinging episodes in NBA history. Him going after Dwights reputation every month on TNT played a huge part in Dwight not being selected to the NBA 75 list. The Bill Walton beef is something I just could not understand even after learning about basically every detail. You mean to tell me he started beefing with a guy simply because he doesn't think he's on the same level as Kareem, Bill and Wilt when those 3 guys consider that very same guy to be a peer? The fact that it's still going on to this day just further highlights how fragile his ego really is.
@Toodles_McDoodle Жыл бұрын
Walton played and won his last ring with *that* Bird Celtics team. Any black kid who grew up in that era HATED the Celtics and their players and loved the Lakers. It's likely that Shaq wasn't a fan right from the start. Shaq was also probably insulted on their behalf when Walton did that Nike commercial alongside Kareem, Wilt and Bill. I like Walton but he didn't belong there and was likely included as the token white representation. The final straw was Walton saying Shaq needed to lose weight, which he took as an attack and the rest is (beef) history.

@@chriscurry2496 that’s a bit disingenuous. The Celtics were one of the first teams to integrate so a lot of the black fan base were Celtics fans. I think insecurity is in the core of Shaq's continuous self-vindication after retirement. He knows that he could have done much more, if he had taken care of his body, so he tries to hide it to the outside world with layers of arrogance, outrageous takes and ego-boosting idiocy, what in the core is just plain insecurity.

He left so much on the table. Imagine how dominant his game would've become if he embraced the granny shot free-throw. He could've played another 3 years at a high level if he took care of his body.

This right here. Shaq is the mostly physically gifted specimen in NBA history. Maybe even sports history. He has 4 rings but I think deep down he knows that he really only earned the first one, which was also his lone MVP season. Rings 2-4 were more attributable to Kobe, Phil Jackson, Dwyane Wade, and Pat Riley. Given Shaq’s physical gifts the argument could be made that he underachieved in the NBA. When anyone voices that argument he just responds with “4 rings” because that’s all he can say.

3:23 You can't tell me though that Shaq was not really wrong 😂. Bill Walton is the odd man out in this commercial 💀. I don't know if it felt different in '92 since they were closer to '77 but he sticks out like a sore thumb when compared to the others here. Should have put George Mikan or something

I love Shaq, but his bravado and arrogance is in proportion with his size, accomplishments, and level of dominance he held on his position in the 90s and 00s. There was no reason for him to be as big a punk ass to Walton especially, because Walton was always supportive of him I think.

Shaq really does owe Kevin Durant a lot for making people forget Shaq was the most insecure brat in the history of superstars up until Durant showed up.

Shaq is an interesting figure in the NBA. An absolutely dominant and amazing player no doubt, but he left alot of the table with his focus and discipline in later years. He is a great analyst with entertaining and valuable insight, but is also extremely immature and petulant at times. Shaq is much less able to take it compared to how much he loves to dish it out. He is a great but flawed individual, who is a hypocrite but also a pillar of the modern nba

I think if Walton had never returned to win 6th man of the year in 1986 that his career would’ve been forgotten. It was because he came back and was still amazing after all the years of not playing and the injuries that showed that he truly was one of the greatest to ever do it and that he just didn’t play in his prime. Kareem and Bill Walton were essentially equals in 1977 and 1978. Then my Blazers ran him into the ground unfortunately. I once had my uncle cry in front of me as he talked about Bill Walton he was the most loved man in Oregon for a while there.

I wonder how Shaq feels about this pretty spat with Bill Walton after his passing. I wonder if Shaq will look back and cringe at some of his behavior.

He talks about it on ESPN. Dude was classy about his response, talked about how he was soft about the beef, and how he and bill put aside their differences
