Bro, fuck the number of views. Make this shit because it's good and it needs it to exist, not based on how popular it is over some arbitrary amount of time. I know it takes a lot of work, but I just want to stress how valuable these deep dives are, regardless of the viewership/engagement. We. Need. These. Videos.

Note how Ocelot at the end of the cutscene appears to be eschew while Miller and Snake are upright, but it's a trick. Ocelot is standing on solid ground while both Miller and Snake are bent over. From our perspective, Ocelot is just there and unimportant, but the fact is he's the only one who actually knows what's going on and both Miller and Snake are just two crazy people yelling at each other.
@cocob0l03 жыл бұрын
He stands over them, looming in the background, just like the truth of the entire situation. Right there in plain sight and yet something we choose to ignore. He looks quite intimidating as well. Blank and devoid of emotions as the truth of the matter is. Almost as if he’s focusing on what his next 12 steps will be. Like a chess player, trying to calculate how he can use these two to continue and carrying out his bidding. Probably knowing that he will outlive them and that he (almost) will have a direct link to their deaths. This character who steals the show every single second he’s on screen in the other games, now suppressed, contained, and letting the others have the limelight. To me that’s him really taking the time to try and figure out the best course of action and how to keep these “two crazy people” wrapped around his finger.

It's interesting to think about how the quotes from 1984 about "The Dead" also echo back to the hospital, with Ishmael's wordplay of Ahab being in "the land of the living" with how "everyone wants you dead." It's the same duality that makes up a lot of the game with "living" and "dead" combining into "living dead," which is pretty relevant to almost every major character in the game literally and/or metaphorically.

Ocelot just... standing there... watching, observing reminded me of how in the previous games he will just stand there and let the Big Bad of each game waffle on in front of that game's protag. Iirc in MGS2 when youre captured and being interrogated he actually takes a step forward to say something to Solidus whilst *looking at you* then takes a step back again once he's done. It's almost like he's on a theatre stage, as an actor.

its so amazing that you have 2 previous 30-50 minute videos about the details in these cutscenes, and in all that time this one starts with just finishing the tutorial, like damn it just goes to show how much thought and subtext was packed into this game, like there's more to talk about than some full length triple A titles have in the entirety of their playtime in the tutorial ALONE

Africa Addios is an old Italian documentary about the decolonization of Africa(I am not a very PC dude but even I would say HARD trigger warning on that film for sure). It has combat footage of the mercenaries in the Congo. Those bastards where hardcore. A dude in a beret spraying away a U.S. M1919 Machine gun from the hip as he pushes up on a rebel held position. The Boss would love those guys. And “Mad” Mike from the video led them I believe.
@timtim63733 жыл бұрын
It also shows the brutality that came from the decolonization of Africa. Africa should have never been colonized but it shouldn’t have been decolonized so abruptly. (colonization was wrong and fucked up but leaving like they did only hurt Africans who became dependent on the colonial powers and unable to rule themselves they should have slowly weaned themselves off) One part that shows this off the best is the auctioning of the estates. Where Africans bought homes and items they didn’t need items and had no Strategic the only value these things had was in a system that didn’t exist any more.They were taught to want these things to desire these things but they were never taught how to get them. Africans aren’t stupid they’re just competing in an advanced world with with only the bare minimum knowledge they needed to know to work for the colonial powers these powers left before Africa could be brought of to standard. Those that have education have no desire to share it amongst their fellow Africans cause doing so makes them no longer useful idiots. (I’m painting in broad strokes obviously) my opinion ultimately doesn’t matter because I’m not from Africa nor do I have any political pull in Africa)

@BigDaddyWes3 жыл бұрын
It's written and presented in such a way where it's very easy to miss pretty much the entire plot. It's incredibly dense and many players act like they "Got it, but just didn't like it." When in reality they have no idea what was going on. (And probably only listened to half of the cassette tapes). Kojima knew people were going to view TPP the same way they do Venom Snake. As an impostor or bastardized version of Metal Gear. The game itself is a metaphor for the series in this crazy fucked up way such that people who desperately want the game to be something it isn't, won't ever be able to comprehend how it's ability to make them feel that way is part of the reason it's a masterpiece.

You know, this game ages like a KEG of fine wine. I know the complete story of mgs, but I’ve never played peace walker or any of the psp games ( because at the time had my psp I did not know about peace walker) and that made the ending of mgsV hit that much harder. I had only seen cutscenes for that specific game, the big story moments and had no idea it even had coop featuring the medic. I feel like I had been brainwashed myself, fooled into thinking I was the same Bigboss from that time. Even tho in my head I was putting things together slowly that didn’t line up with the mgs4 Bigboss ending. I didn’t know every detail of the peace walker mission or really even any memories of the previous mother base. Paz and Chico were only flashes of memories from ground zeros and main cutscenes from peace walker. So mgsV had me captivated and confused. I was just as confused as venom snake. Amazing game amazing story surprisingly finished, the story of V is not unlike souls games where context is king and the story has to be uncovered because the game is only giving you context and nothing else you want to find out what’s going on you got to figure that out

Something you might have missed, because he is very noticably absent from MGSV, but I think Grey Fox fought in the Rhodesian Bush War as a mercenary, I think that was even where he found and adopted Naomi Hunter. Early on when I first watched people play TPP, I caught onto some of the body double stuff, and thought the twist was gonna be that the Big Boss you were playing as was actually Grey Fox, as he was horribly disfigured in the Bush War, losing his nose and ears when he got captured, so the idea of him getting plastic surgery on his face seemed extremely logical. I thought that was gonna be a detail that came up in the chapter in Africa. In MGS1 Grey Fox is referred to as "One of Big Boss' most trusted lieutenants", and yet he never showed up in MGSV, and it felt like such a prominent omission that it seemed like the only logical outcome.

16:12 bringing up those lyrics in relation to Kaz made me notice an interesting parallel. It's the same song that plays when V smokes his sparkless "phantom" cigar, apparently in a deep state of dissociation. Here in this scene Miller is looking for a reaction or a "spark" from Snake, but Venom has no context for how he's supposed to react. At the end of the game Ocelot leans in in a similar way to light the cigar of the real Big Boss, who is very much lucid and connecting with Ocelot on a personal level.

Ocelot has the black armband in MGS3, presumably even before ever meeting Snake and/or The Boss. It definitely isn't because of mourning The Boss, but I do agree that it probably signifies mourning, as the rest of the game's appearance makes sense. But it could very likely just be some shit he likes cuz it looks cool. Counter to that tho is black band on a black uniform doesn't really look any cooler than not having it. Maybe he was mourning never knowing his parents? Or he's just the biggest enigma in the entirety of the series so he probably doesn't even know anymore.

@10:45 I just can't see Kaz joining with the Rhodesian government as a merc. It makes more sense for him to have fought with the Zimbabwean insurrection, after all Kaz is an admirer of Che and it was the Cuban government that supported the people against the apartheid government of Rhodesia. And where did Che go after his most remembered triumph the Cuban revolution? He went to Africa, to continue fighting la revolution. I know in this scene Kaz is implying they'd work for anyone, that ideology plays no part in what missions they accepted, but I just can't see Kaz supporting a racist government, especially when you consider the othering Kaz experienced as a GI-child in Japan after WW2.
