I agree. The audio quality was way worse at the very beginning of their conversation. Later on it still has some quality issues but doesnt sound nearly as bad as it did at this start. Probably has something ro do with getting accustomed to it 15 mins in but Robert's storytelling voice definitely distracts from any audio issues. I wish I could listen to all my favorite books with Robert's voice over lol. The well told tale is good but I've already read most of those. .

This was exceptionally good , probably one of if not the best and most comprehensive discussions of the Others I have listened to in years. Just top notch stuff here Robert and Jon ; you definitely each have different perspectives , analyses and approaches with the ASoIaF material which for me tends to make the best discourse / discussions and you certainly compliment each other quite well. This ninety minutes absolutely flew by for me , hope we can get Jon on here much more often. Might leave another comment getting into a few of the specific points & insights brought up in the vid that I really enjoyed and agreed with but for now , just excellent job here Robert and Jon , well done , 👏🏻 .

Bronsterys you are quite welcome , I found this to be such a fascinating enjoyable listen and watch on an equally interesting topic. Hope to have you on here much more often Jon. I will definitely be checking out your essays and general other work also. I will probably leave another comment on some of the points that really stuck with me. In particular I def agree about your perspective on the book’s Night’s King possibilities ; as I think there are some timeline / ancient legend / lore inaccuracies going on there. Of which GRRM has even said akin to reality we always have to question the accuracy of such ancient events and legends. I suspect this was likely not a post Wall , post Long Night event and as you suggested this could have been some type of Others’ creation story. The show version is possible as the failsafes and vulnerabilities of the Others do seem by design from the CotF but the books’ Night’s King story could have factored in there. Was the book’s NK just another Craster type ? possibly but if so would that warrant such a response of a Stark King and the King Beyond the Wall coming together to take him out ? Especially since although perhaps not as widely known but the response to discovering what Craster was doing did not illicit near the same level response or outrage. Personally I think the book NK story is def another level above that. I am a bit torn but I do think you are onto something with the books’ Night’s King , maybe the CotF only created one female Other or a Coldhands type female wight and whatever ritual she and the Night’s King were up to could have lead to the growth and perpetuation of the Others. Idk , but I do think it’s possible that there are some inaccuracies with such an ancient event and I like your thinking with that concept. Great job Jon , hope to see you on here quite a bit going forward.

Good video as always. You talked about the 'Othering' of those different such as the Ironborn, Dothraki and White Walkers. Another author called Terry Pratchett has a similar concept in his books. In one call 'The Carpet People' he starts by talking about a tribe of people, and how this tribe will call themselves something like 'The People' or 'The True People'. Then one day they will meet another tribe, and the might call this new tribe 'The Others' or, if they've had a bad day 'The Enemy'. If only they were to call them 'More True People', it would solve a lot of problems.

interesting also that in Tyrion's trials by combat, his alleged crimes are killing or attempting to kill children, and harming children is something identified with The Others...as if these trials represent the attempted and unjustified Othering of Tyrion by Westerosi society

Another implication for the ends of the Wall: it's pretty hard to build walls on water ;) I'd think salt water/fast running water could clearly pose a problem to them (maybe only up to a certain "power threshold"), since it doesn't freeze as easily as e.g. a sweet water pond/lake. Guess the God's Eye is rather protected by magic, as it is from men nowadays, unlike the "edges of the wall".

What if it's not water that the Others can't cross, it's something IN the water, like salt? They can walk across snow--technically frozen water--but snow does not contain salt. Maybe salt's crystalline structure can hold or amplify spells, like quartz in a computer

On GRRM's inversion of black and white in classic fantasy; Tolkien's color usage strongly resembled alchemical color patterns, and Martin seems to have forgotten Saruman's use of the White Hand as a badge, and becoming Saruman of Many Colors when he went full D-Bag. However, all the "Tolkien imitators" assuredly turned these color tropes into cliches. I think Martin is pulling the whool over our eyes in that he is using the same color patterns Tolkien did, but in an informed way as Tolkien did, but his imitators didn't.

I can't help but feel the basic Azor Ahai legend, as delivered by Sallador Sahn, is a very vague telling that incorporates both the creation of the Long Night, as well as the resolution. Also, I don't think the theory of the wind(s of winter) being what ends the Long Night by blowing away the moon meteor debris is crazy or far out. In fact, I think it's the most sensible and true to form theory out there.

My final point is that I don't credit George as being an all powerful author who will manage to make everything hang together brilliantly. Am rereading the books again and there are many issues. More than once I think, north of the wall is described as very cold and yet there is wet snow. Several other descriptions of nature show a lack of thought/knowledge. A bigger issue is how many people, even smart ones like tyrion and tywin, pursue foolish and self destructive courses of action, seems a bit implausible to me. I suppose it's wrong to assume the "humans" in this world are the same as us humans but to me that's a cop out explanation. Having said all this, one of the things George is great at, and what has hooked us all in despite the flaws, is the mythology and backstory and character arcs, so I'd expect him to tie up jon, daenerys, bran, the others etc well.

Not convinced by your "knight" theory : It's more wishful thinking than true (I think) : 3 names for you : Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy and prince Rhaegar. They were honorable and good men. Also Brienne and Bronn have been knighted at the end (according to the TV Show). Also Bronn fought for Tyrion for money and advantages (not because he was willing to risk it's life to save an innocent). And Oberyn to get revenge / justice for his sister and her children.

Expanding on what was said about the long night being dust particles blocking out the sun, and when the dragons was born there was a red meteorite in the sky maybe thats what starts the long night from it hitting the earth and causing a similar situation to what happened with the dinosaurs, therefore starting the long night and giving the others the long winter to attack with , not sure just an idea thanks

The Irish Sidhe are sometimes described as the "wee people" but in my opinion GRRM meant the more modern appearance of the Sidhe which are more like Tolkien's elves.

There is also some debate over whether "wee" is meant in a sarcastic manner. There's some evidence that they were called that in the same way that a man of large size might be called Tiny, i.e they are called this because they are large. The same is suggested of the Leprechauns too. There isn't enough evidence to say this IS the case, but there is enough for several folklorists and linguists to suggest it as a possibility.

@@arcanics1971 Interesting, I hadn't heard that. But I think it would be difficult if they were human-sized for them to dance in the toadstool rings, for instance. Those mushroom rings are usually only a foot or so in diameter. I guess that type of reference is why I thought they were always meant to be tiny.

I'm surprised you don't cover the connection between r'hllor and the other. These opposing gods are the only ones who appear to have real power and their struggle seems the most fundamental in the story. Both their followers/tools (red priests and others) have grown in power/returned as the harsh winter approaches. The red priests seem to have a fair bit of knowledge about what is happening. Incidentally, a simple explanation for the erratic seasons would be that the planet is on a v irregular orbit, giving varying distances to the sun. When long winters approach, the other gains advantage, so r'hllor works harder to combat. Possibly it's an eternal battle between the 2 gods that causes the erratic orbit, as one then the other temporarily gains the upper hand.

Well GRRM already responded to the idea, that the seasons might have a scientific reason. He said there was a magical reason. But I too noticed, that while the "old gods" do have some actual things to their mythology, they themselves dont seem to have any percievable power. The 7 gods dont seem to have any power to them and seem to be made up by their faith but the lord of light absolutely seems to be real. Or maybe there are just magical powers you can learn and the only ones teaching it are his clergy. But generally speaking, this seems to be the only god, that actually has percievable power. As for the great other, it would make sense if he was there and was the others god. But we dont have any evidence for him existing. So while the other gods are all arguably fake, R'hllor seems to be the one god you can actually percieve in some way. His clergy does hold power and their rites do achieve things that cant be achieved by science in the same way. I quite honestly doubt that any of the gods are real, this world simply doesn't seem to have any actively involved deity. But I do think that we would need to speculate much more tondisproce the lord of light than we'd need to when discussing the drowned god or the 7. The old gods religion does seem to get most things right, but the unorganized nature of it and the tradition of verbal preservation, made people abandon it in spades and forget about it. R'hllor does seem to have a very organized religion and their traditions and lore dont seem to be reliant on verbal preservation, it seems to be written down and taught to priests.

While I believe Jon is important I firmly believe he is Stark and Dayne and the physical manifestation of a The Sword of the Morning. George is never obvious and too many people believe the R + L = J Theory for me to believe that it would be that easy to figure out.

Why were the 'others' created during long night. I think this is very crucial point which is missing while discussing the white walkers. It is very improbable that it was just a coincidence. Long night was a global event. Was long night happened because of magic that created others ? Or were the others created using the magic of long night. Is it tied to off balanced seasons ? I think they are coming back because the next long night is about to start. The red comet might be its indication.

I don't think anyone knows for sure. The three most likely possibilities seem to be: (1) Bran becoming the king at the end; or (2) Jon killing Dany; or (3) Dany burning King's Landing. I feel quite confident that #1 and #3 will happen in the books, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if #2 happens as well. My guess would be that the twist they were referring to (which George told them from the beginning) was Dany burning King's Landing, and that George told them about King Bran later on (he apparently said a lot more after Season 3, I believe). But that's just wild speculation.

I think The Others are more likely a faction of The Children than of man - The Children, not The First Men of Westeros, are very very clearly Aos Sí, The Sídhe; The Others as we know : Ice Sí. Their abilities & language nearly perfectly parallel & converge with those of The Children, not of Man; these abilities converge with those of Men only insofar as that one of the races of Man inherited these via intermarriage with The Children. This itself however brings us to another & akin possibility: The Others are wrought from a select few of 1st-generation hybrid-blooded children of Singers & First Men, or an hybrid line cultivated & bred carefully by The Children, to have all traits they wished of both races, & those of neither - &, while nearly all of the ice lords’ abilities are versions of the powers of The Singers, it is humans not children who appear to our knowledge capable of the greatest feats of reanimatory Necromancy, & Man not Singers who wear & craft armour, which adds to the appeal of idea - & it would not surprise me if this is true that The Others would have both The Singer, The First Men, & The Dawn Imperial blood. Their beautiful visage is as that we see so clearly of the not-merely-but-human dragonlord children of Amethyst Empress & others of The Divine Empire of Dawn combined with that of the graceful Singers lords of the forest; their fascinating & at times collaborative at times rivalrous connection to The First Men proven several times over hints at a deeper bond there than mere coincidence of geographic proximity. This would be my best 2 guesses; what I am certain of is that The Others have at least some substantial lineage as Singers, be it hybrid & artificially modified or pure & artificially modified or not!
