My dad was one of the architects on the original ride at Disneyland, and I can confirm that Madame Leotta in the séance room is the same Leotta at the end. Neat lady who was a fellow imagineer and family friend. I can still remember my dad coming home and telling us about this incredible "stretching room" but as kids we couldn't quite conceptualize it. Also, can't confirm, but supposedly one of the singing ghost busts at the end is actually Walt's image.

No. It's Thurl Ravenscroft whom people are erroneously confusing for Walt Disney. It's the similar mustache & facial build they shared, methinks, which led to the confusion, as does the completely fabricated "Walt's cryogenically frozen head" myth, which is disproven by the factual confirmation of "Uncle Walt" being cremated & interred in a Disney family burial plot in the celebrity cemetery in Glendale, CA. with his wife Lillian, their daughter Sharon & her husband.

One of my favorite bits of trivia about this ride is that the ballroom guests are holding their dance partners opposite to the way they should be. This is because of the Pepper's Ghost effect. The mannequins are posed properly, but because of the reflection in the glass we see them backwards!

Here's another secret that I learned when going on a guided tour of the attraction. (I worked at the Mexican restaurant in Frontierland and my group won an attendance contest.) During the holiday season, when the attraction is given its Nightmare Before Christmas makeover, a cymbal-playing monkey headstone is added to the pet cemetery. When they first gave the attraction said makeover, they placed a number of cymbal-playing monkey toys in the attic. Those toys weren't able to function as often as intended though, and eventually they all just up and died. So that headstone is a memorial to them.

I turned 18 in the Summer of 1969, just in time to go to work at Disneyland as a Ride Operator in Frontierland Operations. I worked there until 1973. My last shift was memorable. In the Mansion, at that time, were the following work positions. Out front at the Main Gate to the Mansion where you tried to make sure no one came in eating or drinking. The next position was ticket taker. (Yes, you had to have an E ticket to get on the ride at that time). Next, was the person loading the Foyer (which becomes the Stretching Room). Next, two elevator operators, then one or two loaders depending on crowds, and one un-loader at the end of the attraction. There is a Ride Foreperson, who sits in an office just behind where the Doom Buggies enter to be loaded and one other, very important position, Utility. The Utility person stays in the dark shadows watching people. That was my position on my last day in June of '73. Primary duties were to make sure no one was trying to get in or out of the Doom Buggy, making sure couples were not getting too amorous (Walt liked a family park), and also making sure no one was smoking, particularly marijuana. In that position you had the freedom to walk the entire ride to make sure things were going as they were supposed to be going. You also carried a garage door opener-type of device that allowed you to stop the ride if anything dangerous was taking place. As I started down from the attic to the graveyard, the foreman came running to me from that area and wanted to know if I had seen him. I asked, "Who"? He said the man with the gun. He just shot the glass in the ballroom. I told him I didn't see or hear anything. We both turned and ran towards the exit to see if we could see the culprit but he was long gone by then. We were told that someone from the WD Studios came down and took photos and placed the spider, then traveled all the way to WDW in Florida to place the spider in the exact spot. I finally made it to WDW a few years ago (2009) and lo and behold, (drum roll...........) there is no spider at the Disney World Mansion! Either he got hungry and left or they told us a fib. Anyway, it was a great four years working there. It took me about ten years to get working there out of my system. Now days, you couldn't get me to go there. Politics and the PC crowd that runs the place have completely ruined it for me. Those of you who still attend, have fun and enjoy yourself. To each, their own.

They eventually got rid of the utility position by the time I worked NO/BC Attractions, and the rotation started at Unload, then Load 1, Load 2, ER 1, ER 2, Foyer, Tickets/Turnstile (after tickets were extinct), Front Gate if it was busy enough, then a break, then back to Unload. I remember on Party Nights or in summer, we’d fight to stay on the Foyer position (last position on those nights) to listen to Sarah Vaughan perform at The French Market. “Bump around me!” She was so amazing! Such good times!

I went to Disneyland when I was 16 years old with my big sister, who was 24 at the time. We were so excited to see the Haunted Mansion. When we first entered, we were in a round room, and there was a man standing against the wall that we thought was a mannequin, so we were giggling and making fun of him; then he blinked and we about died of embarrassment! It sounds silly, but it is a fond memory of a time I spent with her. Little did we know at the time that a handful of years later she would be taken from us in a car accident. She was always so fun to be with, and I miss her terribly, 35 years since her accident. I’d love to see the Haunted Mansion again.

Actually the singing busts are often mistaken for the Mellomen, mainly because Thurl Ravenscroft was indeed in that group. The others are session singers (as was Thurl) who likely sang together a lot, but not as the Mellomen. The other four are Jay Meyer, Verne Rowe, Bob Ebright and Chuck Schroeder. (Thurl sings bass, BTW, not baritone.) The real Mellomen, depending on the era, were Thurl, Bill Lee, Bob Hamlin, Bob Stevens, Bill Cole, Max Smith and Gene Merlino. These names came from Buddy Baker himself. Bonus trivia: the pipe organ soundtrack throughout most of the ride was played by Gaylord Carter, except for the Grand Hall scene, where the "Kooky Organ" played by Carter, with an overdub by William Zabranski and a couple of strategic edits made by Baker to lock it all together. He felt Carter's rendition wasn't quite "kooky" enough, so he had Zabranski come in and have some fun with it. The instrument used for all the organ parts was in a recording studio in Glendale, CA, only about three blocks from WED. It remained in use, mostly for a weekly religious program's pre-recording until the late '80s or early '90s. Sadly, the studio closed and the organ was split off and sold for parts. It's pipes are located now in about three different instruments around the country.

Arrrgh... Properly warned ye be, says I. Who knows when that evil curse will strike the greedy beholders of this bewitched treasure?” from the transition tunnel that’s now where Davy Jones is (when you’re going under the railroad tracks and into the main show building), along with a bunch of other random pirate voices. One thing I noticed in the video might be tied to one of the RAREST spirits in the mansion. Near the end, one of the cast members said that their favorite detail is when Zero flies over the mansion during Haunted Mansion Holiday and specifically that you "see his orange nose glow." This must be a reference to an effect that maybe only works once a decade where you can see an orange glowing orb moving around in the windows of the attic. This is actually a mostly working effect at Disney World but at Disneyland it rarely ever gets repaired or even rarely gets turned on. So always keep an eye out for this very rare spirit!

Thurl Ravencroft also voices Fritz, the Russian parrot in Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.

Fritz is German, not Russian.

Very informative, thank you very much. However, unless I am mistaken, the Grinch was voiced by Boris Karloff, not Paul Frees. In the original cartoon any way.

Thurl Ravenscroft was one of the founders and a member of the Mellomen, which was a real group, from 1948 into the 1970's. Thurl is also heard backing up singer in popular hit songs, like, "Dance With Me, Henry(The Wallflower)". His voice is heard in many Disney attractions. Boris Karloff is the well-known narrator and voice of the Grinch in "How The Grinch Stole Christmas". Paul Frees didn't do any voices in that show, but, he is also a very prominent voice in many of the attractions at Disneyland. "Dead men tell no tales"!

That’s right. Boris Karloff was the narrator and the voice of the Grinch. Interestingly, Thurl Ravenscroft did the singing in The Grinch, and also did voice-over work and singing for Disney in various films and Disneyland attractions (which were later featured at Walt Disney World), the best known including The Haunted Mansion, Country Bear Jamboree, Mark Twain Riverboat, Pirates of the Caribbean, Disneyland Railroad, and Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.

That was fantastic. SO much information. I really enjoy when Jack comes to town and takes over so you might need to do this one again once everything is decorated. On another note, curious to know about the train that goes around DL since Galaxy's Edge has been put in. I would love to see that AND the most unpopular rides. Your video would probably change their status.

EPIC !! HAUNTED MANSION is my Number One Favorite DARK RIDE !! Awesome job on this vlog. I learned things I never knew about H.M. !! Two months ago was my very First visit to DisneyLand. The HAUNTED NANSION was a FIRST RIDE to ride. While waiting in the Cue line. I got a Huge Laugh at the Cat Statue sitting in the Bird Bath !! Great Job on this one, THANK YOU !
