I think it’s important to remember that none of this free quality content would be available if it were not for Eric’s generosity. He started doing this for us during the pandemic to keep us all motivated and inspired. He also does have a business to promote which is a necessary part of the daily videos. Let’s lift each other up instead of criticizing.

Wow, what a thrill to see this class from 3 years ago, many thanks Eric and Tom, a lifetime student watercolorist . Same as Eric says, I've been a frustrated mess and still years later I still feel intimidated. These classes help me to learn as well as gives me confidence to keep painting like Thomas....I cannot express how your teaching Eric has inspired me, and Tom as well, merci Beacoup Fellows. I’ve tried watercolor years ago, was still working retail, just became very frustrated with the process. I’m now retired, have a granddaughter who taught herself how to play the guitar by watching You Tube. I figured I could learn painting that way too. Now at 80 years old, I’m enjoying all the instruction that is free here! Thank you for getting me started on a new addiction! Lol! I’m not doing too bad. Proud of my self!

The mention of diagonal positioning of lights and darks to pull people throughout the painting compositionally is a good suggestion. I have done it for years, as well using color accents, but did it intuitively without realizing the compositional advantage.

Wow….incredible interview, painting, thought processes, design, techniques, etc….I will most certainly be watching this again. Less than a month ago, I had NO idea who Thomas Schaller was….I was just drawn deeply to his work without much thought to the artist….sorry if that sounds impersonal or rude….it’s not meant to be. So much of this interview seemed to strike home for me….no more excuses….I need to start my journey….I have no goal in mind other than to enjoy myself in retirement…..thank you for the kick start! (Where can this painting be seen in its completion?)

great tips. Wor,ing on a digital waterco,or (using rebelle software, which is on-sale right now, bet the pro version for same low price), and m having trouble because I didn't plan out things like shadows and contrasts for maxi um impact beforehand. My work as of now is too discombobulated because of the lack of planning in this larticulsr scene I'm working on. I have to stop, take a snapshot, and work it up in photoshop to see how I can change va.ues and shadows and co,or etc to work better toeher.

Eric, you talk too much! You spent the whole first half of the video yakking with Thomas. Then you told him he only had 20 minutes or so to complete the demo. Instead of painting, you talked. Then, had the affrontery to tell him he only had 3 minutes left. How rude. I’ve tried to watch some of your other videos with well known artists, but they’re all the same…too much Eric and not enough content.
@barbarawhitehead54882 жыл бұрын
Agree completely. Schaller is introduced as probably the best watercolorist in America, then Eric talks which prevents Schaller from starting. This resulted in painting being much less complete than it could have been, and even moreso it rushed Schaller’s explanations of techniques. Thank you Pat for stating this, I value these videos and would love to have seen/heard 20 more minutes from Schaller.
@musicman46352 жыл бұрын
@@barbarawhitehead5488 RIGHT ON! You spoke for all of us viewers! Rhoads is about $$, publicity, etc. Tom Schaller is about ART!

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. You get to watch a master artist for Free! Fast forward is you don't want to hear the intro. I enjoyed the discussion. Also, this is a promotion for Eric to spread the word about the magazine and the videos.

Outrageous that Rhoads would yakkity yak throughout the demonstration, while Thomas labored away! And to not allow him to finish his painting nor allow viewers to see the final result of Schaller's work here. We watched faithfully and were denied a final look at his work. Shame on you Eric! Get wise Eric. This is NOT about you, it's about the generous artist's work and thoughts. Butt out please! Schaller deserves more respect!

When Thomas says that he paints in complimentaries, it sounded like he was speaking about mixing complimentaries versus visual complimentaries; can anyone clarify?
@morgenmachen24002 жыл бұрын
He uses visual complementaries. If you watch him paint regularly (it's not apparent here), he works out of his palette directly, doing any mixing on the paper.
@belle422 жыл бұрын
Visual complimentaries means the synthesis of two opposite colors that our eyes blend to make a new color. That's not what Thomas does in his paintings. He typically uses a trio of secondary complimentary colors to play off each other to create contrast and an emotional element. His favorites are purple, orange and green in various shades and tones.

Thomas is an amazing artist - but "best in the USA"? It's very subjective. I'd say he's one of the best. Dean Mitchell is too, as is Mary Whyte, to name just a couple that come to mind.
