Thanks for the shoutout man. That red chert is most likely Munsungan chert, found in northern Maine, the greyish stuff may be onondaga from Canada. Compare to pictures on google. I’m glad you were able to find it, that red chert is very very rare, paleoindians 12,000 years ago had that stuff and brought it all the way down to connecticut. Precious stuff.

I'm in Scotland and was buying flint offline. There is churt everywhere here and I didn't know I could use it. Now I use it and no longer have to buy flint 😎😎👍👍. A nice look at the rocks, good sparks, better than what I get! cheers.

Wow that's great. Glad to be of help to save you money. Also the survival application is that if you were somewhere and didn't have anything to start fire, you could pick flint off the ground. I'm jealous that you have chert everywhere. Since I'm Scottish (in part) I have always wanted to visit. Now I have another reason....

@@northernembersoutdoors1045 Here it's quartz that's everywhere. But there is one area (not too far away) which is an ancient volcano. I was shocked to find hardly any quartz, so I learned how to make sparks with basalt.

Thank you. I've only been to AZ once on vacation. Someone from your area might be able to give you a lot more help than me. I did find a pink chert there that (I believe) people in ancient times valued.

Thanks a lot Doug. I am in Vermont and have been trying quartz because it is everywhere, but I haven’t had good luck. I think it is my steel. I have tried a bunch of different high carbon steel like files, dump rake hay rake teeth pieces, etc. I’ll keep trying and will look for chert looking stones.

There are areas in Maine known to have chert....

Mt. Kineo in Moosehead Lake is made of Rhyolite. The whole mountain is Made of rhyolite, I’m pretty sure it’s the only source of knappable rock in Maine.

I can find Chert for sparks but very little for knapping.
