My first 69 Z/28 was in 76, it was beat up on the outside and the trunk didn't have the spatter paint anymore. It had a very strong 302 4spd, and 4.56 gear. I was 16 it didn't take long to get banned from my school parking lot, and not much longer to get a pile of tickets. Mom made me sell it, I took the $500.and got a slow car 67 mustang 428 cobra jet automatic.

Nice! My first car was a gutted out ‘67 Camaro rs (it was an ss too, but I didn’t know that until after I sold it. Duh). It had a 400 that I built, a full manual th400 that I built, and a 10 bolt 4.56 posi (until I blew it up). Miss that car. Lotsa burnouts in the Sonic and high school parking lots. Got that car in 2001.

Thanks for the overview. Excellent !! I graduated in 1966, so these were all around as a young man. I was playing with Fords and Mercury's (S-55 390 4-speed) and thought we were hot stuff going 12's on street tires ... Back in the day, the hot street tire were Atlas Plycron's. Unique rubber compound that hooked on average street pavement. I doubt you could run them on a prep'd track. They'd wad up on you ... But it's good to see real survivors out still runnin. Keep up the good work 🙂

I appreciate you not wanting to cut the car up for the sake of a quicker ET. I'm in the same situation with my sons 3rd gen Camaro. The car is so nice and all original except for the paint and a mild 383. He wants to go faster, but I won't even take the spare tire out of the 3500 pound beast. I enjoy tinkering around with it, and we only got 3 passes on it, but it has gone a 1.8 sixty foot and 12.90 @106 on set of 245/50/16 half bald Chinese radial tires. It still has the junk 7.5 rear axel with 3.42 gears, and stock convertor, mid length headers with single 3 inch exhaust. The car has more in it. We might swap out the .456 lift cam for something bigger, and better ignition, but the car will idle very nicely as is. We are now looking for a mid size G body wagon that we can cut up and make a sleeper out of.

Kudos! Quite amazing stuff you're doing on stock tires. I used to think I was doing something when I'd squeak out a sub-12 second run w/ my '67 fastback Mustang that I built a 351C w/ a M-21 tranny out to a set of 3:90 gears on 50 series tires. You've got that Camaro D-I-A-L-E-D I-N! I could have benefitted from more attention to chassis knowledge vs my obsession w/ carb tuning and port work. Sadly, that Mustang got taken out by a drunk, while driving home after a knight of racing at Pamona Speedway back in '82. Fun times in that old Pony.

That 8.5 cage drives me KNUTZ. In the mid 90s 10sec was the no cage cutoff with what you have good for 8s I believe. There are no recorded fatalities in 8s or slower for NHRA sanctioned events with those rules. Roof Halo, front w/cross under dash, mid, and rear points with removable door and harness bars should be good to 8.5s. It's more than 90s requirements without ruining a mostly stock car for cruising. Stuck running the 1/8th. I want the cage but eliminating removable door and harness bars SUX. Just come up with a design if you won't accept existing.

I guarantee there a lot to learn from doing something that didn't work out like you hoped it would. When something doesn't work, do it a little differently. That's how you learn. It helps that they have raced 68-69 Camaros in many different forms for over 20 years. Having the dyno in the other room doesn't hurt either. It saves having to drive 75 miles to see if that new part helped or hurt performance. :big thumbs up:

Beautiful Camaro you have there! I would keep it as it is also and would rather run it in a slower class than cut it up and install a full-blown racing cage in it. I know, that is counter to some people's thinking, but I appreciate street-machine type performance more than "track-only" cars. That is why I like the limitations of the "stock" tire in your class. Anyone can install tubs, slicks and spooled rearends and such, but it takes finesse to make a car accelerate that hard with those tires as if it were still a street-machine. Once you cut up a car to chase after that ever-quicker E.T., you just switched from a fun and challenging hobby to a brutal kidney-pounding job. Maybe I am strange, but I never want to make my hobby into a toilsome chore. Once you are determined that you have to keep going faster, you are actually on a pre-determined road of ever-increasing expense and the risk of parts breakage and injury goes up exponentially. Anyway, I love your cars for what they are, and I hope you have many more years of enjoyment with them. Be safe and God Bless you guys in this New Year!

If you'll work on the hood alignment, this car will pickup 6 or 8 tenths. (Driver's side is high and the passenger's side is low.) That might even be the reason she was lurching to the right on every launch. With the hood straightened up you can start to tweak your anti-roll-bar and find those couple tenths and maybe even 8 or 10 more mph ... Who knows? Anyways, point it somewhere and stomp the pedal. I have the same conundrum with my 79 Z-28! I'd really like to go out and do some small tire no prep with it but it's far too heavy! But it's a beautiful car and don't want to cut it up and make it lighter, it's the same as yours, never been in a wreck, never any panels replaced, trunk looks like the day it rolled off the assembly line! Looking at an S10 to make into a race truck but damn I hate to go that route! I like vehicle's to look tough as well as be fast, and an S10 or fox body doesn't look tough at all!!! Now not wanting to let out any secrets about your engine,,,, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say 720 at the tire's, the biggest secret there would be 560 cubic inch!!! Cuz really not that hard to get that kinda power out of 560ci! When you have people such as turbo john making around 1300hp out of a 364ci small block, sure that's with a turbo but still. My son has a little 383 with some china Pro-Maxx head's (200cc) decent cam and intake and with a 200 shot of nitrous makes 580 to the tire's! I think what really makes your car a rare bird is that collum shifter! I get why you wouldn't change that, but I myself wouldn't be able to not change that deal! But it does make that care very rare I'd think! Only other Camaro I've ever seen with a collum shifter was a 74. Have fun in 2022 with it! Hopefully we'll all be able to race this year! Never know the way things are going with this BS administration!!!

I know the existing roll cage helps but do you think that a set of subframe connectors would also help? Good luck catching your dad's ets and mph. Please keep giving us insight on your car. Think about this, if you had this car back in the early 70's you would take everyone's money including Sox and Martin, Dick Landy, the Grump, and others including the silver bullet (who was sponsored by the factory engineers at dodge). They were only running in the tens back in the day. I love your car, keep getting faster.

Since you guys started to allow some of the aftermarket parts it got me to thinking and it's in regards to the tires. Now if I remember right in an article Dudek wrote it was all about preserving original parts. Great. So why not require a tread depth for the rear tires? Throw a new wrench in the works for the class.... I know someone who has seen one of your mopar racers beat his head against the wall more than once trying to make big power with factory exhaust manifolds... Nice car!
@HorsepowerDepot2 жыл бұрын
A tire tread rule was a thing for a few races about 8 or so years ago, The racers hated it, the fans wanted to see faster passes, and the organizers got tired of checking tires after every pass. That rule got thrown away pretty quick. A copy of the FAST class runs out east, they check tire tread, they also lost most of their racers who have come to race in FAST, tire tread rule being one of many reasons they left that series.

Some where at 5:00 or so. To all these people who say "I wont share any details on the build cuz they dont want to give out any secrets." I have this thought. People who hold others back is just as bad as the haters who bash people for sharing knowledge. You realize you could tell people exactly what you did and most wouldn't be able to comprehend or they would be bashing what you did anyways. I am always trying to make build better but no one wants to listen anyways. I often get slapped with hate as if the work is a waste of time. Meanwhile I wouldn't be sharing if I hadn't already done it with great success. I will take this a step further. You can have a slower car and beat someone with a much faster car based on skill alone. Power is only a small part of the puzzle. That I am gonna hold people back comment I hear so often is just wrong and is what's killing the sport. In 40 years this sport will be dead.

Enjoyed learning a few details on how you get these cars to run so hard on the stock tires. The rules with 8 point cage and window nets is going to ruin the factory stock look. Just don't run NMCA. Back in 1970 the Pro Stock guys were running a 3 point roll bar and running in high 9's at 140,. I am surprised there have been no blowout issues with those tires at that low pressure.

How many passes can you get on a new set of wide ovals? Great video

I’ve had this set on the car for a year. I don’t do crazy burnouts with them. Just enough to get some heat.

Would the Holley unit be worth while on a 500hp/530lb ft, 463ci 68 Firebird that’s 95% street driven and occasionally taken to the track? It’s really hard to get a good launch without spinning even with drag radials. It would be interesting to see how you go about installing it with the carburetor. Thanks

Great video, thank you for the info. Just curious can you give us a little info about the rear end? Not asking for gear ratio just curious how you get a 12 bolt to hold that kind of power. I'm building a 79 Camaro and have been out of hot rodding for 30+ years, having a hard time deciding which direction to go with the rear end setup. thanks!

I'm no expert, but if I had to guess it has to do with not hitting it with a ton of power on the low end (hence the focus on timing retard) and the fact that there's not a ton of grip from the skinny tires. Power + grip breaks rear ends and puts lots of stress on the rest of the drivetrain, too.
