Years ago I read that Grumpy used micro switches on his shifter linkage to adjust the timing advance on his 327 '66 Chevy II (Grumpy's Toy) and was running mid 11s on 7-inch slicks. He was a trickster, cut from the same cloth as Smokey Yunick! I miss those guys, they were so much fun to follow. Horsepower Depot does basically the same thing, only with electronics.

@@danmyers9372 Actually, if you could somehow have this 70 Vette at the very first ever Pro Stock event, this car would have won easily while setting both E.T. and MPH during the Competition - not too mention No. 1 qualifier. Bill 'Grumpy Jenkins driving Grumpy's Toy (a 68 Camaro) turned a 9.99 at 138+ mph to defeat Ronnie Sox in the Sow & Martin Barracuda (a 69 model if I remember correctly). A mid 9's and lower car was the stuff racer's dreams were made of back then. They simply did not exist (not in any 'stock' class, that is).

I really enjoy the FAST series of racing. I can see how this would be so much fun. Even though I'm a mopar guy I do like the big block chevy cars you have and using ingenuity to pull every bit of power and speed out of these cars. and on those skinny tires too. Well done sirs.I know you'll keep knocking down those times. Best of sucess this coming year!

The F.A.S.T. vehicles are the baddest cars in history, period. Nine seconds on a 5 inch tire would rule everything back in the day. These cars are just remarkable with todays technology. Obviously we are getting 800 horsepower ice cars form the factory and 1000 horsepowered electric cars but these F.A.S.T. cars are just wicked. You and your dad have done an outstanding job learning and experimenting, keep going!!!!!

The amazing part in all this is found in how it re-enforces the idea of "no replacement for displacement". When people talk about how old school engines can't compete with the modern engines they forget that the old school engines are no more limited to exclusively using 50 year old tech than any new engine is. This car runs ONLY low 9s due class rules. Imagine where it runs with APPROPRIATE sized headers and exhaust, an intake that isn't mandated to be "factory appearance" and then the drag slick that can actually "Hook" without taking away timing for so much of the initial run. Mid 8s are merely the easily achieved, first stop, on the way to something absolutely unimaginable 1969.

"Make em FLOW, make em GO". I had a 71 LT1, nice car but the 67 L79 was more of a favorite for me. I always like the newer style of 68 to 72 vettes but the HP Drop started in 71 and continued to decrease. I think the 67 was still and always ill be the best year for the Vette's at least for me. Great video , thanks.
@ejgrant5191
@ejgrant5191 2 жыл бұрын
The 70 LT-1 with the 11:1 motor is a BEAST! the 71/72 smog motors lost quite a bit not only with the compression drop but, the 71 up "smog heads" dropped quite a bit of power as GM was frantically searching to reduce NOX emission levels for the 72 model year, combustion chamber quench between the early heads and the open chamber later heads cost quite a bit of mid range torque...That's kind of why you will see that 71 & 72 LT-1s were often speced with 4.11 gears to make up for the lost power with gearing...Ford and Mopar didn't emascualate their Muscle Car motors until 1972 . My 72 LT-1 with factory 4.11 gears ran 103MPH @ the Drags while my 70 LT-1 ran 107MPH with 3.70 gears....Big difference in the way they run and what fuel they like, even with mild timing that 70 LT-1 isn't happy on 94 octane pump gas, put race gas in it....It's quite a bit happier!

Nice video and awesome car! 700+ at the rear wheels, that is a lot of power. I would be happy with 500. You proved that 2½" tubing is not all that bad. I bet that roll cage stiffens up that car a lot. The factory frame is not all that strong. The bird cage section in the middle of the car helps. I redid the frame on my '70, sandblast, rewelded seams, painted. Apparently it needs to be reinforced in the rear section of the frame to handle a built motor, I found a kit that does that. Just a street car, no racing.

Just bought a 71, wich will be (at first) mild mannered, but hope to eventually apply some of the knowledge that you’ve instilled. !5 years ago, without internet knowledge, I built a 69 (1 car garage, I could barely open the doors enough to squeeze in) a n 11.6 121mph car. 383, but none of your restrictions. @@gordocarbo I wish I could remember details (cam, etc.), but basically everything I could delete I did. Anything that could be replaced with aluminum I did. Deleted the pop up headlights and installed LeMans style buckets. Fitted those with ‘72 Datsun bulbs (junkyard find) as they were the smallest (only one’s that would fit) I could find. Deleted the heavy radiator support and fabbednone from aluminum and the top was the mount for hood pins. Edelbrock Performer heads, roller rockers, Demon carb, HEI, Hooker side headers with no inserts, Kirkey aluminum seats, Hairy Glass Camaro dash (fiberglass) Ultralight guages, pistol grip quarter stick, gutted the doors (no windows), aluminum door panels with holes in them, deleted the heater and glassed the firewall, deleted the wiper system, no fender wells, later year/thicker half shafts with joint straps, safety loops on driveshaft and half shafts, Man, I forget a lot. Only a 50 shot of nitrous. 18 x 8’s front, 18 x 9.5’s in the rear on BF Goodrich drag radials. So much more I wanted to do with it. It was a street/strip car, so had fun spanking Vipers, new Vette’s, etc. Lol! Just got a ‘71 LT1. Flew down to Texas and drove 24 hours back in a U-haul with one of their car haulers. Sooooooo much to do! Lol! Thanks for your reply brother.

I'd like to build one basically identical, but with less compression, slightly bigger motor, and add headers to offset the lower compression ratio. I believe he said at one time the manifolds cost it 100hp. So headers, 572, a bit less cam probably, and I wonder if a 4L80 would fit in there? Probably run high 9's with a streetable Vette. Awesome.

Really impressive how you get these 1/4 mile times on stock tires with zero wheel spin. Just goes to prove you don't need monster drag slicks and thousands of horses to be quick. I remember reading about this class when I was a kid and I was BLOWN AWAY that they were running 11's. Two of the only tricks that they "loose lipped" were a Hemi guy said taped a sandblaster nozzle on his fuel line and went to dinner to widen the inside diameter and one trick that a '69 Camaro guy did that I already knew about from the '87 Turbo T nicknamed "The Grey Ghost" that used to race Woodward. The RPO V75 "Liquid Tire Chain" option. I actually emulated that trick in my 4th gen with a junkyard Trailblazer washer bottle (it has two motors) and picked up 2 tenths using TracBite at an already good track on free 17" snow tires. I usually get the bye run when we have an odd numbers of cars. But this is an amazing video for those of us that wondered. It's kinda like you are telling us Santa isn't real though :)

You wouldn't normally think of a Corvette as a sleeper but in this case, yea!

Some of those 1969 Corvettes came with side pipes. I wonder if those would have improved the flow somehow just due to how they were routed to the side of the car and less bends?

I don't know about the time but them side pipes looks cool

The factory side pipes hurt a lot of power. The muffler isn't a very good design.

First, thanks for the walk through, I'm building a street/strip '75 and I was thinking about a small flair on the wheels..... maybe not anymore. BTW, it is getting expensive to put a 12 bolt inside the 10 bolts.... to the point that I might just go with a 9" IRS.... Second, you mention how much fun it is. What people don't know is part of drag racing is the 'hurry up and wait" - you spend lots of time int he pits or staging lanes. In the staging lanes its really a meet and greet car show. Meet extremely diverse people with all kinds of interest in cars - from pickup truck owners running their diesels to the '63 Pontiac running stock motor... Highly recommend you find your nearest track and head out especially during "test and tune" Don't be shy.

One thing he should tell those that don't know. Those aren't stock tires. They are stock appearing tires, made with a compound as soft as the stickiest drag slicks, and with very little tread depth. Probably even softer more flexible sidewalls to ease the shock on the tread. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with all that. Back in the 70s we ran recap tires that had a soft compound and even what is known as sawdust recap snow tires. Real soft compound and sawdust in the rubber that would fall out as the tire wore to make little holes for traction in snow. But the soft compound on dry pavement would grip great, and would surprise the unknowing street race competition. He probably also has a very expensive soft hit torque converter to go with his ignition adjustability to keep from blowing the tires off and putting the power down instead of spinning.

Your tire assumption is 100 percent incorrect. They’re tires from Coker tire just like what anyone can buy. We talk about it in our latest video actually.

Might have been said but with that exhaust being the biggest restriction is it specified in the rules if that's inner diameter or outer diameter? .7854 x that like a bore and find the extra you can get with 2.5 inner diameter vs outer diameter. Really cool walk throughs Man. Cool channel and excellent cars.

I always wondered about that much power with a Uni-body car, or even a fiberglass body and the twisting at launch. Maybe because you 'soft' launch them it's not an issue? I love this channel! If you're heading out to Norwalk anytime this year, let us know if you can... I'd love to watch and take some video of you guys. I'm a stones throw over in Akron. Thanks!
