So that's what's going on beyond all the light pollution. It's funny, we are actually out there, and at the same time the night sky is no longer a part of the majority of our lives. At 1:30 he said ‘since Mercury is so close to the sun we can only observe it when it reaches its highest’. Not really. I observed it during the day on May 9, 2016. It was transiting the sun that morning where I live. That means it was passing in front of the sun. I have a telescope with a solar filter. I have pictures of Mercury in front of the sun that I took through my scope. I still haven’t been able to observe and photograph a total solar eclipse I have pictures of a partial.
