I like that, after the aircraft requested to level off at 21000', the controller immediately asked if they needed assistance. I'm sure it's part of a protocol, but could easily be overlooked (or ignored) on a busy frequency. Always good to bring light to a *possible* issue before an emergency is declared. When the pilots are busy with checklists, A-N-C, etc., it's nice to see ATC being proactive in the situation.

To the guy who doesn't understand how flying and communication work: First, they determined that there was an issue. As a precaution, the halted the climb and headed for HNL while they evaluated the situation. Second, once they had checked things out, they decided that heading to HNL was the right choice. Third, they eventually decided that the situation was evolving from a mere inconvenience and becoming more serious, at which point they declared, gave an explanation, and everyone worked to resolve the emergency.

What made all the heat and smoke at first and, did someone vape in the toilet
@rdbchase8 ай бұрын
Do you suppose that someone vaping in a restroom could relate to sections of the aircraft emitting heat or an odor of smoke?
@Mike.The.Jeweler8 ай бұрын
@rdbchase hysteria can easily cause that. Someone sees smoke from someone vaping, freaks out, tells the cabin crew, game of telephone starts, suddenly everyone can smell smoke, walls are hot to the touch, and nothing is to be found when you hit the ground
@rdbchase8 ай бұрын
@@Mike.The.Jeweler Vaping doesn't produce smoke in the first place; it seems unlikely that someone could mistake an exhalation for evidence of fire. Vaping in a restroom could easily trigger a smoke detector however.

Why do some pilots/procedures have them stop on the runway vs taking a highspeed taxiway to clear the runway?
@andreea0078 ай бұрын
If there's any indication / risk of fire, you'll probably want the plane checked asap, especially if you have passengers onboard. For example, if you have fuel leaks, you might burst into flames while taxying. To my knowledge, it's the Captain's call if and where the inspection is performed. I personally wouldn't risk the lives of everybody onboard just to score some points for clearing the runway quickly.

Very weird miscommunication from DAL316 -- no mention of the emergency until over three minutes in; saying they they want to get the plane headed in the right direction (to Honolulu) when the plane was ostensibly bound for Salt Lake City without any indication that there was an emergency was bizarre.

Not really strange, in an emergency their taught, aviate, navigate and then communicate
@rdbchase8 ай бұрын
@@Jack-sy5wn "they're" -- sure it is; whoever is on the radio with ATC has several exchanges apparently motivated by a concern to land the plane in Hawaii, but fails to communicate that fact. @@rdbchasewhat miscommunication are you referencing? Everything sounded like it was understood by both parties involved. @rdbchase8 ай бұрын
@@tristated9310 The pilots should have communicated their intention to land in Honolulu and disclosed the reason (when asked whether they needed assistance -- ATC needs to be trained to use the word "problem" when appropriate). @tristated93108 ай бұрын
@rdbchase Was the flight crew a bit cryptic about their intentions at first? Yes. Should ATC have interrogated the flight crew? No. ATC did exactly what was needed without interrupting.
