Brilliant video and a simple solution to prevent the garage door being forced open. 🤔😂👍 People are funny commenting about not having a side door, simple answer is either fit one or find a suitable video 🤔😂

Absolutely no use if the only entry point is through the up & over door.

That is true, for the minority who don't have a personel door into the garage the only method is to install an external lock but unless you strengthen the corners like in the video, then the door is vulnerable.

You want some Enfield garage door locks or similar, they do the same job effectively and are a lot easier to install. They bolt into the frame and can be operated from outside. You can get them keyed alike for multiple locks.

@@FixitwithFowler I did this some time ago as I have no personnel door, just the up and over. I did a total of 6 locks, top left and right into the outer frame, bottom left and right into the outer frame and also bottom left and right into the concrete floor as I think the bottom corners are most vulnerable. I also have one of the external locks that rest up against the front of the door but tbh they wouldn't take much bending out the way but do act as a visual deterrent somewhat plus CCTV.

Dead bolts which cross horizontally into the garage door frame either side, they can't be manually opened without the keys either.....
@FixitwithFowler

A common form of entry is to force the bottom corner of the garage door. Once inside, they can manually operate the locking mechanism or take smaller valuable items like tools. This method prevents entry in the first place.

Isn't the weak point the bolt catch into the wooden frame ? Just 2 screws into wood ? Saw your side door video and noticed the long screws through the frame into the walls. If someone is determined enough, they'll get in eh ? Nice clear video, good audio and easy to understand. Cheers 👍

If they really want to get in, then they will. The normal point of entry is the corners of the door as they bend them, hence the steel plates. You're right about the screws into the frame, but they are 60mm screws. Thanks for your comment!

No good where I used to live. Rows of garages with only the garage door. It was quite a rough estate. A lot of break-ins. Garages and houses. Cars vandalised or stolen. Most of my neighbours locked up like Fort Knox. Cross bars and bolts on their garages. Burglar alarms etc. Still broken into. So I adopted reverse psychology. Only the original garage door lock. Which you could turn with a screwdriver. And I would go out leaving windows open. No attempt at security at all. Lived there eight years. Never broken into. And nothing taken. They robbed the ones they thought had something to protect.

If I were attacking that door I would simply quietly cut a split in each corner to feel for what is securing it, after realising the corners were strengthened, dead locking the corners would be a better option as nobody would be able to reach through and pull those bolts ? as ever a combination of security on these doors is best, I also use my disc locks on the garage doors when the bikes are inside, as they are chained to ground anchors, 120db noise is enough to deter all by the most determined ? I hope this is taken as constructive critique.....my garage is precious.

There's much easier ways to achieve this. Drill into concrete floor and fit spring bolts to the bottom corners. For the top it depends on the type of up and over mechanism, just drill a hole through the edge of the door right through the mechanism arm and put a padlock through the hole locking the door to the mechanism/up and over arm. All 4 corners secured in under 20 minutes for under £20.
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 14 күн бұрын
The bottom corners of the door are where garage doors are forced open. So a spring loaded bolt into the floor wouldn't help as it would be lifted out as the door bends. Thats the other reason the door is reinforced on the corners with 3mm steel plates.
@RS20O0
@RS20O0 14 күн бұрын
@FixitwithFowler in my experience the spring loaded bolt prevents the door being bent outwards in the first place, and combined with the top mounted padlocks the door can't be lifted upwards. Your solution is belt and braces for sure if someone has the time, tools and equipment to implement it. My solution is for ease and simplicity.

A better job would be to use proper nut rivets & bolts , instead of those weedy DIY pop rivets . Also those weedy bolts & receivers are only a gesture , they need to be better quality & more substantial with longer screws in receiver . Better still would be to junk those tacky up & over doors altogether & fit proper substantial frame ledge & brace doors on decent frame ,each with 3 quality band & gudgeon hinges coach bolted on . Fitted with 2 chunky heavy duty chub hasp & staple & coach bolts plus humungous reinforced pad locks & anti sledge hammer guards welded in place . Finish off inside doors with strong devils tail bolt secured directly into deck & D handled bolt into solid steel plate receiver fixed securely to head of door frame . Upon seeing that local scallys or opportunist thief , will more than likely pick on an up & over door . Job done 👍

@@FixitwithFowler There is such a thing as too cheap , & your cheap pop riveted steel plate & cheapo bolt solution comes under that the too cheap category in the great scheme of things . On the subject of fitting steel security doors . I once had a job sheet to go & fit a security steel door at the rear of a busy sub post office . The villains just removed the bricks from the wall & entered the building & had it away with all the loot & cigarettes anyway . If they are real pros & really want your swag , they will get it . The game is really about slowing down the remaining petty chancers , even a few extra bolts in the corners of an up & over door won’t put them off , because the doors crumple up like a bag of sh💩t . & the cheap bolts & keepers are only a gesture at best .

@maskedavenger2578 You can only do so much, but it's better than nothing. The vivits in question (6 for the plate and 6 for the bolts) would only be subject to a sheering force. Each rivit can take 200-300 Mpa per rivit, so that would equate to 20394324.26 kg/m of force per vivit, so i think it will be strong enough
