Clearly the best DIY video I've ever seen anywhere. Super well organized, 1), by showing the finished product first. 2), by showing every step in order with just enough talk to make sure the audience understood. 3), by skipping thru all redundancy and picking up again at the relevent point in the process. 5) By covering every detail, even some for a different kind of door/hardware to cove other types of doors. Thanks! A local garage door specialist just gave me a quote of over $2,000 to install one 8' X 7' un-insulated replacement garage door including all including hardware which was ready to hang. The previous door install already had the flag brackets, vertical rails, flashing and existing spring and shaft. The only requirement was to hang the door. All new cables, rollers and hinges came with the new door. I decided to save $2,000 by watching this video and doing it myself. It took me three hours to attach the two horizontal 2" tracks, assemble the door panels, hinges, rollers and vinyl strip floor gasket. Bravo!

@crimestoppers187721 күн бұрын
@@Hagerman63 That quote was the low bid. I have had bids over $3,000 for the same work. I just made sure the vertical rails and horizontal rails were level and true for the radius curves on the vertical tracks. Move one panel of the door to check clearances and ease of movement and voila! Saved big bucks. I bought two steel rods for the wind up procedure and two Vise Grips to hold and stabilize the torsion and spring assembly and just counted my 90 degree turns. You have to remember to release the vise grips in the the top position for quick and safe operation without banging your knuckles ( on my layout). It is best to not listen to music, talk or think of anything else while working and use procedure by the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4. Done! Write it all down for the first run through before before winding the torsion rod, coils.

I’ve worked for a company that was in business for over 40 yr servings & installing ohd & entrance doors and got a first hand view of door issues in a commercial and residential setting. Learned a lot of knowledge to say the least. The owner was a perfectionist. We would typically install the vertical tracks after the second panel is stacked to ensure the panels don’t fall while stacking eliminating the use of nails. Keeping the track brackets loose for future & final adjustments. Making sure to center the door inside the garage opening & to make sure they’re equal on both side when looking from the outside. Also, the vertical tracks should not be installed directly on the concrete as water will cause rust over time. Along, with the ground will raise and lower cause track issues when the concrete pushed the tracks during freezing & thawing cycles. We also would recommend struts no matter what the manufacturer requested solely do to the fact the opener with cause stresses on the door especially when it’s used primarily. @$15 per struts will save a head ache in the long run. When winding the springs, we would use white spray paint and spray a fine thin line the length of the spring from the center bracket to the winding fitting. This shows how many turns are on the spring in case someone like the customers decides to visit during this process. Typically if the door is 7’ in height it’ll take 7 1/2 turns or so.

This, this is what I want to come and say. I am an Ironworker who does doors. Mine range from 3’x4’ to 180’x60’. But to me it seems the ones that cause the most problems are the simple panel doors and it’s usually not braced properly. Struts are so important. Not a lot of company’s will install them just to save a few bucks.

A two-man install tech job is one of the most gratifying jobs. you build routine with your secondary. after a while youre hanging a door in 45minutes together. I remember we used to do 5 garage doors a day for my building company. everything is just clockwork after a while. the troubleshooting. the winding. one is preparing the hinges on the other panel while your second is making sure the measurements are correct. we used to put the struts up after the first panel never did nails on the side though but its verbatim exact and precise work. One cutting braces with a bracecutter, your second is placing them. Shannon did a stellar job. Gave you a proper run through of how its done. Nostalgic of when i used to work on the gulf florabama area. you explained full rotations, the vice clamp, the color direction on the cable drums. i enjoyed watching this.

I was taught once the spring is mounted take a piece of white Chaulk and draw a straight line across the spring from left to right and as you wind the spring two or three times you will see white coils on the spring and each white coil represents one full turn .if you have to replace an old door spring look to see if it has chaulk coils and count them then read your instructions to see if they match . Super great video like everyone you did. Thank you so much for your good work. My trade is millwright since 35 years. I instaled my garage door just the way you did, perfect! Leveled everything with my laser level. One simple problem with it. The two cables have the same tension on both side when the door is close but at 3/4 open, the left cable is getting loose and the right one is very tight. It takes all the load. Took my caliper and measured the pulleys. The right one is 0.015'' shorter than the left. Since the pulley is grooved on it's width to make the cable running, couldn't put shim stock over it to make it bigger. Decided to put some electrical tape layer instead until equal tension on both side and voilà ! When tape will be worn, I will just put new one. No more problem. Different mold for casting and it doesn't take much difference on circonference to cause that problem. Call the manufacturing door installer. Told me 1 out of 3 doors have that same problem and they never fond any solution. Told the guy mine and he was so happy to ear it.

The reason for the side screw on the bottom roller bracket is so some fool doesn't come along and try to take that bracket off while the spring is tensioned and rip his hands off. I never bother putting that one in. Your door opening should be 2" smaller than the door width for better insulation factor. Do yourself a favor and throw the nails away lol...Set up your bottom panel and install one side track then stack your panels and when you get to the second last panel then install other side track and then your top tracks. before attaching second side track measure top of track down to a roller and make sure both sides are the same to avoid loose cable when door is open. Install top panel after your top tracks are installed. Flag brackets should be installed on your curved track before installing to make things way easier and no need for rope to hold your track up. At least you picked a good door. Steel-craft...you should opt out for the better rollers though...makes a huge difference with the 10ball nylon roller. Your top tracks should not be level either but on a slight angle up. Never wind the springs as you did and always stand to the side of the bars and wind with the one arm not two...in other words never ever stand in front of the bars.... My 2 cents lol

Thank you for taking the time to plan and shoot this video. You demonstrated a very thorough, clear, direct, well planned method to install a garage door and its associated track. You are a fantastic teacher. Great job. Your were able to break the total job down to step by step instructions making it easy to follow. Following your instructions is a plan for a successful installation. I will use your knowledge and guidance to re-install my garage door that I installed years ago. It has been one of those jobs I wish I had done a better job at, and have been putting off re-doing. Thank you again!

If your drums spool in the standard direction, around the back (frame side) of the drum, and the wire at the rotating end of the spring points down when it is facing you, your springs are on the wrong side. You don't have to hold the spring with both bars the whole time when you're winding, it's totally acceptable to rest the bottom bar against the door if you need a break. If you're worried about scratching the door, just wrap a tape ball on the non business end of the winding bar to rest against the door. Most doors actually use pins to attach the cable to the bottom fixture, and you can't put them in after you install the panels without taking off the bottom bracket. So just attach cables when you hardware the panel. Also, instead of counting quater winds as you go, just draw a line across the spring, and count full rotations from there. The standard residential door drum retracts about 1 ft of cable per full rotation, so if your door has a 7 ft height, you need 7 full turns plus a half turn to keep able tension so they don't bail off in the up position.

You did an amazing job presenting this. You never wasted the listeners time and touched on everything I'd need to know. Appreciate the tip about using a nail to hold in place temporarily, I would have done something different and wasted time.

Great video! I watched this last year when considering buying new doors. Doors are ordered, so I watched this again. When the doors arrive in five weeks, I’ll watch this for a third time and be confident that I’ll get a good install. Thanks for the clear explanation of all the steps.

After tensioning springs on a double overhead door, I would like to caution you to keep your body to one side as much as possible. An accident can do a lot of damage if one of the tensioning rods accidently slips out. (one guy lost his nose, another almost severed the tendon in his thumb, etc) Both very serious injuries.

One guy at my door completely split his four head open because of that exact reason.

As a 30+ year industry pro I would not teach a new installer to perform an installation this way, but overall he worked safe, he worked smart & at the end of the project the door seemed to work well. This was a decent instructional video & will probably help someone who has never installed a garage door have the confidence to d.i.y. For the record: I am not bashing how he did the work or anyone who watches this video to learn how to do this job- I have learned to do a lot of jobs outside my trade through watching similar videos. I am positive that I have nowhere close to the overall knowledge base or skill set as Shannon.

This is one of the most exhaustive explanation of how to get the job done. Although I have a pretty good know-how of such installation, anyone with fair knowledge and will to complete the job will be able to do so following your instructions. Well done!
