Idea: Create a series of videos like you visited a elderly relative and found no passwords on anything, old OS, running PC as 'admin', etc. Show how to clean/scan devices, protect them but then make it still useful for casual users who do not eat, drink, breathe security. Take someone with little to no protection to a modest level of protection.
@HarryBallsOnYa3459 ай бұрын
I would like to even see one step further and when you visit said relatives house you find some malware on the machine, how would you go about removing it and ensuring the network is now secure. With all the numbers of infected devices the odds of at least one relative being infected are pretty decent.

Thanks Shannon! I've been working on my Unifi controller. Implementing better firewall rules. Preventing VLAN to VLAN communication. Blocking my security cameras from accessing the internet. Blocking my IoT devices from communicating with other devices on my network. I update my Wifi security settings often. Also keep my printers on their own VLAN network too.

@@ShannonMorse I find all of your videos useful, educational and entertaining to watch. I have been using more 2FA and using the fingerprint reading on my phone more and more for authentication and logging into sites and apps that allow it. The first site and app that I started using it was for my SNAP foodstamp card then for X/Twitter.

The best time of the month to update Windows OS is during the last week of the month because by this time Microsoft had been notified of bugs and then you could assume these bugs were fixed. I always wait until the last week and better yet I wait until the last Thursday or Friday, as in typically anywhere beyond the 25th or 26th of the month.

Regarding No. 7... I want to follow this advice but don't know how to create different networks for my IoT devices (Hub is ethernet connected) and the Wifi access points providing access for my other devices. I heard of using multiple routers, but what is the setup that requires the least devices.
@stuartlaird73419 ай бұрын
Not all routers support multiple WiFi networks (SSID's) or even having a guest network.

Great video. Shared it with some of my (IRL) network. I'm curious as to what good options you'd recommend checking out for anti malware software, and how that's different from anti-virus.

there is one thing you forgot to mention that is that no mater what you do you must keep up on your security because if you do not then all you have done can come for not as my favorite saying that has ever been said is "What mankind can make mankind can break." i recommend doing a security check of your system once a month minimum, pick a day and stick to it, be it the first Saturday of the month or what have you that involves updates, checking for unknown devices, malware checks, etc.

I have a google mesh router that only has a guest network. It allows me to make devices on the main network visible on the guest network as well - I do that just for the printer. I am curious if there are any consumer grade mesh routers that support 3 networks: main, guest and IOT. Also, I would still want to connect from the main network to the IOT network (but not the other way) so I can cast to smart tvs, controll my garage door opener, etc.

ROFL.. If you haven't seen your router and/or modem in a few years, there probably aren't any current updates for them. One of the few appliances I actually recommend replacing LESS than every 10 years.

Shannon, do you have any recommendations for a new Wi-Fi router? There are so many brands and so many models as well asstandard Wi-Fi and mesh Wi-Fi. Help!!!! Any recommendations would be helpful.
@vandorb129 ай бұрын
Too many variables to consider. Focus on what your budget is, what features you want. It should narrow down your search considerably.

Shannon, would you recommend using MAC ID filtering within a 3rd party router if possible? Was just something that I have seen used on my family's home network I'm the past and haven't seen that used in recent years..?
@stuartlaird73419 ай бұрын
MAC filtering is strong, but, must be managed, and many modern portable devices use MAC spoofing to conceal ID. IIRC it is on by default on an iPhone. If you can have a strong passphrase on your WiFi and use WPA2 or 3 it is a little excessive. If on the other hand your have devices with a maximum WiFi password length of, say, 12, or require WPS then you may want to consider using MAC filtering.
@trp2259 ай бұрын
While possible to use please in mind that #1 your MAC/Phyiscal/HardWare Address is always sent in the clear. #2 and it is possible to spoof/clone them.

Technically you don't really need anti-virus software, except maybe the occasional spot check. But I guess it might be useful if you like to download random stuff from the internet. If you have some common sense, and keep an eye out, you'll be fine for the most part. Also, if you are on Windows, then Windows Defender is likely more than good enough.
@ShannonMorse9 ай бұрын
I showed windows defender in this video, and also said you can use the built in AV that comes with your OS. I also mention that if you use good security hygiene online, you generally don't need to pay for 3rd party software. So it sounds like we're on the same page.

can I put my IoT devices on the guest network?
@ShannonMorse9 ай бұрын
Yes! Just make sure the guest network is password protected. My guest network requires guests to click on a sign on page that opens in their browser (kinda like how hotels do it). This defends against some attacks. If you put iot devices on the guest network, don't create a sign in page, as this can prevent some iot products from being able to connect.
