The Gift of Fear was among the most meaningful books I've read. Thank you Gavin de Becker. What a nice opportunity to see another side of the author. His eulogy for his friend Carrie Fisher was heartwarming tinged with humor.

I get the feed for Kevin Nealon videos, but I recognized the G de B name from his sharing in the celebration of life video that Carrie Fisher's brother produced. (It is on KZbin.) Carrie Fisher connection significant to me.

I saw Gavin's name for this hike and thought...who? But Kevin, this might just be my favorite hike ever. I can genuinely understand why Gavin would be a good friend and this FELT like we got to listen in to a hiking conversation between a couple of good buddies. This was not just an interesting conversation, but a wittily SMART conversation (seems like much rarer thing than it should be these days!). Thank you!

Every time I see Kevin Nealon I just think of his role as Gary Potter on Happy Gilmore, when he says the line, "Harness, energy, block, bad, feel the flow happy, feel it, it's circular, it's like a carousel, you pay the quarter, you get on the horse it goes up and down and around circular, circle, with the music, the flow, all good things. . ." The MOSAIC threat assessment tool de Becker came up with is a *huge* eye-opener, it made me decide on a hard pass to taking an online connection with a guy into real life. I had read a very very early version of The Gift Of Fear decades ago (my father a military veteran gave it to me, he *insisted* I read it before I went off to college), I really had all I needed to say 'no' to the dude from my INTUITION, but my rational side wanted a good reason to say no. That need for a reason could have gotten me hurt or worse. Thanks Gavin for all you've done for women over the decades.

Wow ! Gavin de Becker ! He is probably the most influential, most remembered guest ever on the Oprah Winfrey show. His insights and advice on that show impacted women all across America. Even years later, the mention of his name reminds me of quotes from that show. "never let them take you to a second location" was the one i've heard repeated the most from women of all ages. Great guest. Awesome book too.
@norwegian685 жыл бұрын

The Gift of Fear is a GREAT book!!! I reference it often when talking to people about a variety of issues such as why they should not force their kids to hug/kiss people. As an example of how we are all connected, several years ago I briefly mentored one of Gavin's employees. I am a veteran and I was volunteering with an organization that partners veterans with individuals transitioning out of the military. This person posted a request for assistance with his resume so I responded with some ideas/concepts and offered to work one-on-one with him. So we emailed and talked via phone a few times. Good stuff.

Compassion, empathy and forethought. How novel...my mother, too, was a drug abusing alcoholic. Though, my mother was not a murderer. She did die at 36 from hepatic failure. Which, in my estimation, even though she had been clean for two+ years was basically the suicide that she had been averting during nearly a decade and a half of drug/alcohol abuse with the concomitant OD's , too. I think that perhaps I might still be able to relate !
