The Sedgwick County Zoo is an AZA-accredited wildlife park and major attraction in Wichita, Kansas, United States. Founded in 1971, with the help of the Sedgwick County Zoological Society, the zoo has quickly become recognized both nationally and internationally for its support of conservation programs and successful breeding of rare and endangered species. Having over 3,000 animals of nearly 400 species.
Exhibits
AFRICA
From the savannahs to the veldt, Africa is home to a magnificent variety of creatures large and small.
During your safari, you can visit the rhinoceros or view the hippopotamus. You can even get up close and personal with a giraffe when you come to our Giraffe Feeding Station. Be sure to stop by some of SCZ’s most popular exhibits while you’re here:
DOWNING GORILLA FOREST
Built to replicate eight acres of central African forest, the Downing Gorilla Forest is home to a group of western lowland gorillas. The Gorilla Forest allows visitors to be surrounded by a lively and authentic atmosphere, starting with the Nganda Village and then leading to a chance to view the gorillas in the middle of their home. Watch our group of bachelor gorillas as they forage on the hillside or play and wrestle. Watch mama gorillas raise their young. And be sure to keep an eye out for all of the other species that live here, including the playful colobus monkeys and the secretive okapi, a distant relative to the giraffe.
REED FAMILY ELEPHANTS OF THE ZAMBEZI RIVER VALLEY
SCZ is proud to be home to the third largest elephant habitat in the country.
Our elephants live on more than five acres of sprawling outdoor space, with access to an indoor facility as well as a 550,000-gallon pool. A covered pavilion that looks out on the elephants makes a great venue for your special event!
SLAWSON FAMILY ASIAN BIG CAT TREK
The Slawson Family Asian Big Cat Trek is home to Amur Leopards, Snow Leopards, Amur Tigers, and Red Pandas. Watch tigers splash in the pool, red pandas perched in their favorite tree, and leopards taking a nap in the shade.
CESSNA PENGUIN COVE
This habitat was built to replicate the coast of South America.
As a result, the Cessna Penguin Cove is the perfect home for Humboldt penguins, natives to Chile and Peru. The exhibit includes a 52-foot long underwater viewing area, where you can watch the penguins “fly” through the water. Visitors can also see the penguins on dry land; Humboldt penguins nest in natural crevices or caves that are built into the exhibit.
CHILDREN’S FARMS
Now known as the Children’s Farm, this area also includes the African Farm and is one of the most popular exhibits at the Zoo. Visitors can find more than 40 different breeds of animals in this area, including karakul sheep, watusi cattle, and Nigerian dwarf goats.
KOCH ORANGUTAN & CHIMPANZEE HABITAT
Get an intimate view of orangutans and chimpanzees from our multi-level viewing options, where you can observe them play, climb, and interact with each other.
NORTH AMERICA
Grizzly bears and cougars can be found in the forests, while bison and prairie dogs make their home on the range. See river otters at play or a rare Mexican grey wolf on the prowl. Glimpse at native creepy-crawlers. Learn about the elk, and catch a glimpse of the magnificent bald eagle.

I try to show as much information as the zoo has. Zoo's have a real purpose, saving critically endangered animals from extinction. Plus they give people a way to see many animals they wouldn't get to see. This waa a great zoo, they had decent maps and the extra information as you pointed out. I appreciate your comment, thank you for watching.

This is my most favorite place. Sorry you didn’t get to go into the rainforest building, it is amazing in there with lots of birds, fruit bats, a cool waterfall that you can walk behind, giant fish that you can see through a tunnel, and some spotted river rays. There are also lots of birds in the Australia area too so it was probably also closed because of the bird flu. There are also wallaby, wallaroo, giant anteaters and maned wolf.

Fun fact:there are a lot of domestic and wild chickens in Singapore (I think they are silkie chickens I’m not sure) You’ll see them near the Void Decks of houses, some people feed them. But if you do come to Singapore, you will only see them at flats so it’s not very likely you’ll get to see them

I live about five minutes away from the zoo. I got grandchildren of school age and no summer is complete without making a trip. Weekends and Summer days the zoo normally is packed with guests. I’m talking about a 1000-3000 per day. I can’t understand you missing the rain forest aviary it quite amazing in itself. Every few paces there is a bird of some kind or ground animal free ranging within the building just a few feet away. Got to keep yours eyes open or you will walk right past them. The Orangutan is my buddy, he is normally very social at the glass. Sometimes when he’s outdoors he sits quietly within arms reach of the fence so you can really look him in the eye. Speaking to the role of this zoo in particular is breeding and taking animals from other zoos where they are crowded or not doing well. I’m no expert but I think we have had a giraffe, hippo or rhino and elephants birthed here. For out of town visitors it is well worth visiting one of the nations finest zoos. Its true national acclaimed.

Great video. About poaching, I think it’s easy for Westerners to denounce it straight away and whilst it is despicable and sad, these poachers are often extremely poor and do it out of desperation to feed their families and meet demand for customers usually in the USA, Middle East and China. There’s always two sides. Development is often the best way to counteract poaching and it’s worked very well in places like Kenya.
@TomsRoadTrippin
@TomsRoadTrippin Жыл бұрын
I get that there is two sides and probably most poachers do it to survive. It just sucks that critically endangered animals are being killed for their pelts or tusks.

Gorillas tend to be overweight because they are lazy in captivity. But hey they are our closets relatives. 😆 But they are very well loved and taken care of in the program. And safer in Zoo's then in the wild.

I agree with you Linda, they are generally overweight despite getting a well balanced diet. Just like us humans, they get lazy having everything done for them. I guess most of us would do that with housekeeping and room service every day 😀 But, as you pointed out, they are safer in the zoo then in the wild. Habitat loss is one of the major threats to them. Hey Tom! I know i said i would write my comment last night but i was too tired, i had to tinker with my account settings, hopefully we`re all set for my comments now. You`ll notice that i`ve also updated my profile picture, it`s Slappy. The evil ventriloquist Dummy with a serious Napoleonic Complex. (Do not call him Dummy, he does not like that at all). Slappy is by far my favourite Goosebumps creature/character, and probably movie character as a whole. But that`s enough of that, video comment time. This was an amazing Zoo Tom! Pretty good size, very nice habitats and most importantly: The animals seem to be healthy and enjoying life! Sucks that Australia and the outside viewing for the orangutans was closed but that just means they`re making the Zoo even better! Also, i forgot to make a note of it but i bet you found it amusing that there was a shop called Kookaburra Canteen (52:34), considering it`s among your favourite animals to see, maybe in the far future you`ll have a Road Trip to Australia and see them in the wild, i ahve a feeling that you would be absolutely overjoyed Tom! Ok, i don`t wanna ramble on for too long, because i have tons of time-stamps for you today my friend, without further ado, let`s get it! 1:12: Very nice size Zoo, very well done map. 1:53: There`s quite a nice mix, really cool seeing two species together like this. I`ve also heard of something called the blue flamingo a few times before. I don`t think it`s its`s own species, i think it`s missing some kind of pigment, not entirely sure in which species they occur. 2:13: I`ve never heard of Andean & Jame`s Flamingos before Tom! This is one of the many reasons why i love your channel man, always learning new things via the signs and things that you say yourself. Even though i`ve had a passion for animals extinct and extant, i seem to learn new things very often, most often through KZbin nowadays. 2:54: I thought these were Koi Fish at first glance, they`re very big! 3:25: Very beautiful animals eh Tom? I believe the Toronto Zoo has a small herd of Yak, then again the last time i was there i was 2014 and they were still there then. 3:41: If there were two things i would snap out of existence, it would be bullies and glares. Oh well. Very big and beautiful piggies.🐖 4:52: What an impressive animal! The cow behind this one, another channel i follow (Blakes Exotic Animal Ranch) has one that looks pretty much exactly like it, her name is Mooers. Blake saved her from being slaughtered, much like almost everything on the ranch, she`s a rescue. Here`s something ironic: She was the smallest cow going to be slaughtered and now she is the biggest animal on the ranch, she`s very playful, very muscular, i`ll link a video that`s about Mooers so you can see her if you like, Tom. I have a bit of a soft spot for Mooers, i won`t lie to ya, Tom. 5:48: This guy just does not care! That right there is how to look at life. 6:08: Horses are such impressive animals, don`t you agree, Tom? 6:39: I`ve never ever heard of these guys before, Tom! And that`s rare for someone ho knows lots of animal species and lots about them. Always nice to have a new animal for the channel, Tom. 7:43: They have a very nice area, though eh Tom? 8:33: The same channel i mentioned earlier used to have a squad of ducks (they all either got sold off or i think one or 2 got eaten by coyotes) and he named them the Gucci Gang which was hilarious. They were a real mischievous Gang. 8:50: This is actually an Indian Runner Duck, Tom, Blake taught me that. 9:33: Which does sometimes happen, but luckily in captivity, we have a backup plan for things like this! He/She is so cute! 10:30: He has a little toy to play with, good stuff, very nice piggy 🐷. 10:32: Hell yah, one of my favourite wild cattle. 10:41: Forgive me Tom, but these both look like Watusi? Neither looks like the Zebu in the picture, they both look like Watusi. 11:20: TOM, TOM, TOM, it`s a baby! OMG IT`S SO CUTE!! I think i may be coming down with baby animal fever... 11:41: See, enrichment can be as simple as this, does not need to be rocket science. Very nice group of sheep. 13:02: Oh cool! Grown on goslings, very nice, Tom. 13:43: Very interesting to read, thanks Tom! 14:47: Dang it, too small. Not your fault Tom, camera just did not pick up the small writing. 15:08: They are quite the loud bunch. They remind me of my siblings when they`re fighting over something as simple as a cracker but that`s besides the point, Tom LOL. 15:20: That would be me. 15:50: Never heard of this species before! Lots of new stuff in this Zoo, Tom. 15:52: Wow! They can sure jump! (Info on the sign, near the bottom), glad we got to see them , i was expecting them to be out of sight, and we saw a few of them which is a pretty big big bonus! 16:13: Good shot my man. You always get the best shots man. 16:22: He`s a biggin! In bullfrogs, males are generally much larger than the females so he`s probably a male. 17:07: Couldn`t speak English that day or what Tom😂🤣? There`s days where i get tongue tied too, man. 17:19: I often see these on some of the reptile channels i follow, for instance WWR (Wickens Wicked Reptiles) often does Top 5 Lists and these guys often appear on those! 17:21: The Toronto Zoo has a breeding program for these guys, they have quite a few of them, very cool turtles. 17:28: Hell yeah, very beautiful snakes. 18:02: Another species that often appears on the reptile channels i follow. 18:14: Am i the only one who feels like this is a bit small or did the habitat go back some Tom? Very cool amphibian, one hell (pun intended) of a name too. 18:23: There`s an Indian version of these guys which are stunning. One of the fish channels i follow has an amazing turtle DIY (do it yourself) pond with a bunch of turtles and he has a few of the Indian ones, true gems, i believe you`ve seen the Indian variety before, Tom. 18:48: ``Get my good side for the channel, Tom``. 18:51: You know how the Gaboon Viper is your favourite snake Tom? Well, this is mine, also happens to be the longest venomous snake in the world. It`s scientific name literally translates to: Snake eater. You and i have a thing for snakes with long things. Your favourite has the longest fangs of any snake, mine is the longest venomous snake in the entire world. Hehe i think that`s a little funny, i would not want to be on the receiving end of either snake though. 19:19: Those bumps just behind his head are his poison glands, when a dog grabs on to him, he`ll receive a rather nasty surprise if you catch my drift Tom. Cool little toad fact for you, my friend. 19:39: Very cool snake, another new one! 20:38: How cool! 20:41: Their full name is actually Woma Python. 20:43: Pretty cool-looking! Very similar to my Leopard Gecko, Rocky. 20:58: There`s two of em! We had these guys a few times at the exotic pet store i did my COOP at, one was named Peanut, he was very sweet. Very hard to find in their enclosure though, as they are a burrowing species, as your footage suggest, Tom. 21:12: See Tom, you got the pronunciation wrong but it would be hard to correct you in a message, i would have to talk face to face, but you were close enough. Very pretty little toads. 21:25: Another new one!! Geez!! 21:37: Imagine if you could push your ribs out to stab people you don`t like LOL. 22:44: Indo-chinese, Tom. 24:00: That`s unfortunate, but it`s for their safety which is much more important that us & you seeing them as you`ve mentioned numerous times. 24:36: Paul Cuffaro (fish channel i follow) recently hatched out one of these guys from an egg! I`ll link that video as well, Tom. 37:02: Very sad that this happens. Unfortunately, some people would rather wear the animal than enjoy the animal like you & i Tom. 38:57: So i guess tigers are the true King of the jungle eh? I saw some new species i`ve never even heard of before on this sign Tom, maybe 3-4. 49:16: It seems that you`re not the only one who enjoys Zebra butts, Tom, the lioness on the sign does too! Just bugging you, man. This is my revenge for those mice jokes. ``It`s Noah`s Revenge``. 50:55: Since warthogs have a short neck and long legs, they kneel like this to get at their food. 56:55: Seems like that glass is very secure! 57:36: That`s unfortunate, i guess they`re making improvements down there. 59:42: You mean antlers! And no they`re not the same thing. Sorry, that just made my face twitch LOL. And there you have it Tom! Fantastic camera work for a fantastic Zoo, gotta say i was surprised you did not crack Pumba and Timone jokes since we saw both those animals haha. FLAMINGOS! So cool to see all that pink and white mixed together like that. I've never heard of a blue flamingo, would be cool to see one someday. I have seen all of the types except the James's and Andean. Perhaps some time in another country I will. Those are koi fish, they come in many colors. I have only seen yak a few times, they are neat looking animals. This zoo has several different types of cows, the big one with the horns was a good looking mooey. Mr. Goat was just passing through, he wanted to be in the shot so bad he didn't give me a choice. I love horses, I got to ride them a few times. In a controlled environment, trails, would be great to ride one again. I am pretty sure this was the first time seeing that type of donkey, really interesting with the long hair. The goats and other animals have a nice size yard, too bad I couldn't go in and pet them goats. The baby goat was super cute, good to see him getting some extra food to grow up good and strong. The potbellied pig was playing with a treat toy, helps entertain the animals, they learn to maneuver the object, so the food falls out. Now that you mention it, they both are Watutsi, the zebu has the big fatty bulge on their necks. Yeah, baby animals are adorable, cute little black lamb. the other sheep had a similar food reward toy as the pig did. The older goslings were cool to see, usually I only see the babies or adult geese. Sorry about the small signage, I try to show all the info on them. There was so much info on all of them. Those were some loud penguins; too bad I couldn't understand what the argument was about. Yeah Noah, I figured you'd be one of the happy ones seeing the amphibians and reptiles. Very good-looking hopper right there, never understood how people can eat their legs, all those poor frogs. I get tired walking all around the zoo's, I get tongue tied sometimes. That was a small tank for the hellbender, doesn't appear it has much space to move around. I was really impressed with most of the habitats for the amphibians and reptiles. so natural looking, makes it much more enjoyable for us to see and I'm sure the animals enjoy it too. I can definitely understand how you love the King Cobra, they are a fantastic snake, especially when you see their hood open. This zoo had a great variety of snakes and lizards, I really enjoyed seeing a few new ones here. I really enjoyed the rays touch tank; this was a good-sized habitat for them to swim around. There were several cat species I haven't seen before, again, perhaps someday in another country I might see them. Yeah, at least I don't try to eat the zebra butts like the lion was about to. I'm sure they are doing some improvements to the area where the pathway was blocked off. Yes Noah, I meant to say antlers, did I mention I get tired after all the walking? :P Thanks for another fun comment, Noah. Glad you enjoyed the zoo tour, especially the snakes and lizards.

In 2014, when i was at the Toronto Zoo with my grand-parents, they had a pony ride that was meant for children, so me and my brothers went on that. My sister was very young and not from taht side of the family (it`s complicated Tom but i can explain how my sibling structure works sometime if you like) and my other sister was not even in existence yet. But, it was pretty fun! Also got to ride a horse at African Lion Safari, which i have suggested for you to visit when you`re in that area of canada. Something cool about that place is they have buses for the safari if you don`t want to bring your car in or don`t have a car. Yeah, i`m familiar with those kinds of toys for the animals. Multiple of the animal channels i follow offer similar things to their animals. Yeah, i thought they were both Watusi, i was like: What is he on about? Tom, i won`t try to hide it man, i have a very soft spot for baby animals. That`s alright, regarding the signage Tom, not your fault man! Yeah, Tom i`m the same way. It`s not even funny how many times a day i get tongue tied. I like how you don`t edit stuff like that out, it adds to it, ya know? Yeah man, i`ve always loved King Cobras ever since i was a boy. I saw a big one on a Nature Documentary on TV when i was about 5 years old (yes, my love for animals goes that far back), i had seen a huge one and i`ve been fascinated ever since. A channel i watch actually has a female King Cobra named King Covid, sometimes affectionately called Queen Covid, the channel is Primitive Predators if you`re interested! Even without their hoods, they`re very impressive snakes, especially the big guys. That lion has a zebra butt fetish i guess LOL! 🤣 Thanks for another great video and reply Tom! I gotta say man, i`m liking how long your replies have been recently, i approve! Before i sign off Tom: a channel i watch (Paul Cuffaro, i`ve brought him up several times before), well his goose, who was very popular on the channel, a channel favourite, well he`s gone missing. His name is Gary. Since you both live in Florida, there`s a chance that you may see him, Tom. Paul thinks that someone stole him, after all. Even coyotes won`t mess with Gary. I`ll send you a video that Gary is in, so you know what he looks like and then the video where he went missing. Thanks in advance Tom. Recent footage of Gary: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn6lgX2lZ52Gfq8 Video where he disappeared: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGTOcp6Nn6l5e5Y Until we speak again, Tom.
