As a beginner off-road rider, I found that whiskey throttle happened when I was standing on the pegs and going up a steep & bumpy inclines. Your instincts tell you to grab the bars for stability and balance, rather than trusting that you can keep your balance by gripping with your feet and knees. I found that a hard habit to break, as it can be scary at first when climbing steep and bumpy sections.

Exact same as me. Its the only time ive whiskied on my ktm 250sx full of arm pump... Going down a dip and then upon coming up fast, got a bit of air, to land on the rear tyre, then i accidentally wrapped it on because my balance was too far back. A first gear crash, badly injured for 5 months. My mates saw it and said it looked funny as!

It’s because you have a lot of leverage when you are standing up. Most riders push their hips forward and lean back slightly as they are riding into an uphill. At that point the only way to hold on is on the handlebar’s and it’s really easy to get into a whiskey throttle. Try riding on the balls of your feet more, that will allow you to drop your heels and move your hips back. The bike will be a lot more stable and you don’t have to hold on to the bars so tight.

@@SocalOffroadSchool I move my body forward for hill climbs. Head way over the bars. All my weight on the pegs standing, gripping the tank with my knees of course,---and relaxing my arms. I move back for downhills too. I thought all riders did that 40 years ago.

As a new rider who literally just put my ordered online first scooter together and get it's fluids changed I was a victim of whisky throttle twice now while adjusting the bike and testing for throttle play, proper idle and brake setting. This should be the First lesson anyone learns before they even sit on a bike the first time. There are a lot of videos too on throttle control that have good tips that do not even mention whisky throttle specifically. All those tips need to be learned.

Great video. Just had a bad accident where I whisky throttled out of a corner and went off the trail into a tree. I ended up in the backseat and couldn’t let go of the grip. It was terrifying. I escaped with a concussion and a blown knee. Could have been way worse. Luckily, I was wearing full armor, which definitely saved me. I’ve been riding about 6 months now and just got over confident. I was givin’ er after a top end rebuild to see what the bike could do. Stay safe everyone. Accidents happen. I feel better prepared to avoid this happening in the future after watching this video. Thank you!

Thanks for the video. I’m relatively new to two wheels, and I’ve whiskey throttled twice now in a week! Happens on the same trail every time. Loose dirt in middle of road, rear end slips out, I whiskey throttle into the bushes. Just when I think I’m really getting the hang of things I get a fun and painful wake up call...

i’ve only road twice on an mx track and the first time i whiskey throttled going into a corner, panicked and pulled both levers and came off the bike; no injuries luckily. second time riding on the bike i was nervous about whisky throttle so i was way more careful but unfortunately that slowed me down a little, this is going to help big time!

We were taught by Gary Bailey in the 80's to always keep a finger or two on the brake and clutch, (one finger is all you need with today's excellent light controls.). At his schools, he would smack a students hand with a long and light board from the side of the track if their fingers were not on the levers. We forgot how to use a clutch since the EPA forced the 4-stroke on the industry. The reason why you may "whiskey throttle" is if you lose your balance, start falling off the back of the bike, and you end up hanging on with the throttle on. Keep a finger on the clutch, and you can cut off, (or mellow) power when ever you want. Re-gripping the throttle may have made it more possible to whiskey throttle, but it is not the cause. Falling off the back of the bike is the cause. As long as I can control the power with the clutch,---I would rather keep my elbows up and arms/wrists/fingers as straight as possible,-------------------because I still ride on bumpy ground.

hi, thanks for the video training tip the are a big help, Q. ive been riding since a kid (now 50) never seriously just for fun but the last few years have been trying to develop my basics so as to improve control and fun, issue im facing currently is power and keeping attack position. ive been riding POS atomic 250cc 4 strokes untill the start of this year when i was after a real bike (brand name) i stumbled across a 1999 KTM 620 sc 4 stroke for a price i couldnt walk past... you already know where this is going hahaha, im 6'1, 90kg, not the biggest guy out there but no stick figure either & im a stand up rider & really enjoy wringing her neck but mid to full throttle 2nd & third gear the deamon throws me back no matter what . now i find myself developing a really bad habbit os sitting till im in third over 1/3 throttle & hateing myself every time i take the easy way out... im thinking about steg pegs what do you thik, & any tips or advice you can offer other than sell it would be a huge help, cheers, paul H

You kids do it what ever way you can imagine works best. I will stick with what we figured out in the 80's/90's before the freestyle generation. That means: Lower the bars so the ends of the grips are pointing down, (natural orientation of your hands used to be the goal, called "ergonomics"). The point your levers down about 10 degrees. With that set up, it is easy to keep your elbows up, which is needed if you ride a dirt bike over bumpy ground. You may want to lower your seat a bit if it is not too thin from the factory to get some space between the seat and the bars, but it actually feels like good front end control when sitting. I took 1" off my seat though. And here is the big one. Yes, I do re-grip my throttle (like a door knob) when I enter corners, and that is so when I get on the gas, (fingers on the clutch son, never whiskey the throttle again), my elbow is up, and a strong straight line exists (as much as possible), from my high elbow, through a straight wrist, (bent wrists get hurt in bumps), and straight fingers all the way to the levers. I guess the younger generation was taught to not listen to their parents,---so you are starting from scratch. Should work fine of flat ground though. You wanna learn proven techniques that are based on physics in reality. Study Gary Bailey.

When im just little short on the big table top, by landing flat I hit the ground soo hard I have feeling that I'm gonna destroy my legs and I don't know where em I wrong. Can you make video about that situation. Is it my body position wrong by landing? wich wheel do need hit ground first? Etc.. Thanks
@amoore2165
@amoore2165 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you’re looking for answers from just anybody. But I’ll reply with my two cents. First of all once I’ve gotten to the point of distance that the landing hurts you need to decide to ether slow down to a point where it doesn’t hurt... or conversely the better option if you’re up for it is to pucker up and hit it at the speed needed to get to the down slope. Sometimes this requires being scared and doing it anyway. To answer your question about how to land if you’re not clearing it and don’t feel like you’re up to trying. I generally will land back wheel first and you need to be on the throttle and pulling back somewhat so that you can safely jump off the end because you’re probably landing near the downslope. The most important thing here if you know you’re going be short is to make sure you’re straight on the takeoff! So that you land straight. Landing sideways and then it swapping to the other side and high siding down the downslope is one of the worst ways to crash. If you are going to clear it then you generally want to land a little nose first or neutral (tires even)...however if you realize you overshot the landing slope and are going to land flat you need to pull up and try to land rear wheel again if you can.
@SocalOffroadSchool
@SocalOffroadSchool 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ivica, Thanks for the question. I will make a video about coming up short on jumps soon. The most important part is that you get on the gas right before you land to create some forward momentum. If you don’t accelerate when you land all the weight will transfer into your suspension and it will make for a very hard and uncomfortable landing. Make sure to squeeze the bike with your legs so it doesn’t get away from you and try not to “freeze” and get too stiff in your upper body. I’ve made a video on how to clear jumps that explains the body position here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npnVqJl5e9-Uqbc

Not if you are paying attention at all, and keep a finger on the clutch at all times. Whiskey throttle happens if you lose your balance and start falling off the back of the bike. Just by trying to hang onto the bars, you can hold it wide open by accident. Not if you keep a finger on the clutch.

Had a fall today because of whiskey throttle. Was going downhill standing and I probably had my arms at the wrong position and definitely gripping too hard 🙄 That hurt

Whiskey throttle is why I don’t ride anymore. I couldn’t keep from doing it. So I stopped riding, then eventually sold all my kit. I was just to stiff while riding.

How do I keep the 450 from lifting up when switching gears? When I switch gears sometimes my front end comes up
@SuperRobbo91
@SuperRobbo91 3 жыл бұрын
🤣 its a 450 mate it will lift, its an animal! Lmao. You have several options tho, firstly ide focus on your riding postion like mentioned in the video make sure your body is at the front of the bike and lean forward! You could also try changing the sprockets maybe putting a smaller one on the rear would help other than that ide probs be abit smoother with the throttle rather than giving it a full wristfull through the gear changes.

How to u turn the dirt bike step by step
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 10 ай бұрын
Slow down to the speed you need to turn the bike. Lean the bike over, turn the bars until you have turned a half circle. Be smooth with the controls. Keep a finger on the clutch. It should work if the bars can be turned. :)

We need some tips to avoid armpump!
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 10 ай бұрын
Figure out how to ride relaxed. That is what Lechien and Bayle did instead of "off the bike training". When hitting bumps though, the front end loses is "self centering" trail, so the front end can wander around if you are too relaxed for those. Grab the bike with your knees as much as you can, to help take load off your arms to relax. It takes practice. But it should start flowing with less effort. Several factors are involved that lead to arm pump, but the biggest 2 are not being in decent shape and hanging on too hard. I think what Bayle and Lechien did was ride enough to be in pretty good shape, and when they got tired, instead of hitting the gym, they figured out a way to ride and not get tired. The result was smooth and fast. My opinion.

I've been a subscriber for a while and I randomly met Sedlak today while driving some dirt roads in SD east county. I have to say he seemed like a very cheerful and nice guy! I didn't realize he made it out that far for lessons because the address for the school is in Carlsbad. For some reason I was picturing they work in the north more. Maybe time for some extra seat time! I am a little embarrassed that I asked if he was the guy on KZbin, all the racing, hard work, practice, shooting for Dakar, and hey, are you that guy on KZbin? Sorry about that! Thanks for the riding tips videos.

I've seen plenty of street bike riders get on a dirt bike and try to sit on the back of the seat.. Looks stupid and it doesn't usually go well for them. Lol.. They think our dirt bikes are just "toys", that's what they tell me. "Ah, that thing is just a toy". "Lemme ride it".. Ok, here try it out.. Then they sit on the back of seat, pin the throttle and crash like a stupid clown. Lol

A Scooter doesn't have a good way to hold the bike with your legs because they are in free space out in front of you. Don't try to stand up on a scooter or street bike unless you are already an experienced rider and can control the throttle properly. This goes for Wheelies too - Don't do it.
