Snapper Mower was just one of the many "Mergers and Acquisitions" that became so commonplace in the late 1980's that the first movie "Wall Street" based the story on it; Gordon Gecko and his "Greed is Good" speech. It's now 43 years after the guy who waited to get elected before he told us "Gubment Bad" and that the Corporate Taxes and the Regulations he would be Cutting were the Corporate Taxes and Regulations that Roosevelt had put in place to form the strongest Working Class AND strongest Economy the world had ever seen...

It has definitely changed from the old days of oiled foam filters in the metal housing. I remember the days when Magnetron ignition was a Briggs innovation that was retrofitted to the older models with points. Everything is leaning away from maintenance - no oil changes - just check and add oil along with friction fit air filters. Heat/cool cycles and vibration is definitely going to affect any item that is friction fit. They need to update the design to a twist-lock style filter.

Old dude here noticed this on his new AYP-Husqlectrolux Orangeburg Special a couple of years ago. It looked like it would draw gnats, so I made a foam donut to wrap around that sucker. I used a small diameter caulking backer/snake. Figure out the length with about two inches of overlap, lay it out on a flat surface and line up your mark. A miter cut with a razor knife keeps the lump away, (stack cut, it won't matter if you mash it, and don't cut your fingers) and a hot glue gun will tack it together on the outside. As long as the inside diameter is round, a little melting is OK on top. Snug a wedge in behind it, just to make sure it stays put. I live in the Sandhills of North Carolina, where decks go to meet their sandblasted doom. It ain't recommended to run an engine in liquid dust country with faulty filtration, neither. Thanks for the video, sir.

@SARCASTICLES
@SARCASTICLES 2 ай бұрын
@@IndRepairOk....I went out to the barn and looked at my mower again. I only suggested the foam snake method because it's what I had lying around, and I keep an eye on it. Most folks don't work on their own equipment anymore, they depend on somebody like you. The foam is not 100%, a better solution for your shop environment might be an O-ring that will fit in the round groove on the filter. I originally thought a more gel-like substance would be a better seal, like the stuff they make jelly fishin' worms out of. That would be good to go, only it would probably not survive the heat for long....ever notice how they melt in the tackle box, and stick together? Instead, a fat silicone O-ring has the elasticity and heat resistance, and a smooth surface to seal against plastic and rubber...I've never tried this myself, but it seems like the right thickness would both seal the crack AND keep it sealed because it pushes backwards and creates it's own wedge by pushing up against the filter housing. I hope this helps you solve this problem....and as always, if you or any of your IM Force is captured by the Briggs engineers, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge....good luck Jim!

@SARCASTICLES
@SARCASTICLES 2 ай бұрын
@@IndRepair Groovy! I would have tried this myself before suggesting it, but I ain't got an O-ring kit. I KNEW you'd have at least one in your shop. Is it just me, or does it seem like the O-ring guy was on vacation when they went with this design? That groove in the filter, with NOTHIN' to do. It seems obvious now, but it looks like it was designed to have the seal act as a shim. You gotta wonder if the seal made it difficult for John Q. Homeowner to remove/replace his air filter during the design phase, and they just left it out. They could have just as easily molded that mount with a simple depression to hold the O-ring in place. I hadn't really thought about it much until I watched your video, I figured somebody else had come up with a fix. I know how frustrating it must be for you as a professional to know all those engines are suckin' dirt, and there's not much you can do about it. If this works, all the power equipment shops in America are waiting for your new video, just in time for grass-cuttin' season. Keep us posted.

It's because these small engine mowers are made over seas . The filters, cables, and other small external parts are made in a different country than the rest of the engine and deck. I worked with a few guys who were all excited about buying a mower that didn't need oil changes. One guy spent $3k on a rider for his yard. It lasted 2.5 years. My rear drive, walk behind bagger craftsman mower w\briggs motor is over 20 yrs old. I change the air filter and oil before each season. Clean the plug and starts 1st pull after priming it. Only downside is the rear wheels are $100 a pair and only last about 5 yrs. Getting really hard to find replacements now. Probably just bought the last set on earth.

I was a mechanic at a jd dealer till about 2017 when we closed. Those filters were just coming in at that time. The rubber is very soft and looking at ones you opened up the filter rubber was perfectly clean as was the plastic that it goes over. I never saw a bad one. The worst thing about those engines is the compression release sometimes breakers and then you have to buy a whole cam. The other problem is the head gasket likes to fail on the single cylinder engines allowing pressure to enter the crankcase by the area the pushrods pass through causing burning oil and sometimes oil seeping out of the fuel pump. I put one of these single cylinder engines on my friends 160 th replace a Kawasaki and he finds that it uses less fuel , because it is overhead valve as opposed the the 12 hp kow. And it's noisier which I blame on it being so light. It feels like it weighs half as much as the old engine.

Many of these are mounted on pretty good machines. That simplicity mower will outlast the engine if taken care of. It is just crazy how they design them to fail. To your topic of throwaway mowers. I bought a push mower one year ago. It had no fuel filter, so I added one. Due to the height of the tank, there is no head pressure, so just adding a filter caused it to start to gallop as the fuel ran out. Next I added a new fuel tank at the push bar, which raised the head to more than 18 inches. This fixed the running out of fuel. When I wanted to change the oil, I noticed there was no drain plug. So, had to flip the mower over to drain. Both problems tell me the mfg cuts every corner, for every penny. What a sorry state manufacturing is in.

Engineering mistakes happen, its not always a conspiracy. I've been working on cars trucks and equipment for almost 50 years, and I've seen plenty of faulty designs over that time - even on some of the so called they don't make them like that anymore models. Whenever I run across designs that missed the mark I make corrections. I don't have any like this, but I would either retrofit it with a prior design if possible, or improve the seal - for sure I would at least figure out how to wedge the filter more firmly in place.
@IndRepair
@IndRepair 2 ай бұрын
Definitely! The problem I have with them is obvious engineering mistakes happen and they are never addressed, just pumped out faster and faster. Automatic compression release on intek camshafts for instance. Been making them like that for a long time and a $5 redesign on a $100 part would fix the issue. They continue to make them with plastic instead. They market it like it's your saving grace when really it is just their best idea to get out of bankruptcy

@@IndRepair All true. Sometimes the aftermarket steps in with a more durable design replacement part. Had a Briggs and Stratton engined push lawn mower that seized. Took it apart and surprise suprise, it had a ringed aluminium piston running in a plain aluminium bore !!! Doh !!! Guaranteed to fail !!! Bought a ride on mower a few years later and I instructed the Salesman, I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING WITH A BRIGGS AND STRATTON ENGINE. So he sold me a 15HP Kawasaki engined lawn mower that's still going 18 years later. Local Dealer told me if he sold a Bull and Shit engined lawn mower, he had a special pre delivery technique. First he removed the spark plug and squirted some engine oil down the plug hole. Rolled the mower around in his hands for the oil to coat the bore, then turned it over very gently by hand. Next mixed up 25 to 1 two stroke fuel and filled the tank. Then attempted to start it. If it still seized and some still did, he'd call Bull and Shit who would send him a new engine, no questions asked and no they DID NOT want the seized engine back for analysis. Seventy years ago or so Briggs and Stratton made engines that lasted. Not any more.

That should be a huge recall on the engines or at least a proper repair kit made to fix the issue. Most air filters are clamped down to hold them sealed and in place. (Larger versions of the spring clips that held on distributor caps in the good old days?) Great video. I agree demonstrating the problem is one thing. I get Briggs is BS lately. But......... no offer of solutions here for the team here? Like. Not a ounce of a solution? "Oh well your Briggs is gonna die from faulty filter design" *shrugs*. Gee, with that kind of attitude, no wonder corporate america is walking over everyone. They are all door mats. 1. this should be raised as an issue to the FTC. 2. post a stupid simple fix (hose clamp, screw, 3d printed part, lego block propping the filter up), as evidence to show how simple the problem could be fixed that a giant corporation like Briggs could have no excuse for missing, such that it proves they are scammers. Further giving weight for the FTC to crack them upside the head. 3. This stupid simple solution could help out all those people out there currently suffering with a limp d**k air filter. If we want things to get better, we need people to step up. Unfortunately I won't be home to check on my v-twin until May, but I certainly will be addressing this issue and I'd be happy to post the solution for everyone if I can fix it simply and easily. From the video I guess a small slice of 2 inch silicone hose or PVC will slap this problem in the face.

This is why I refuse to buy anything with a Briggs and Stratton engine. They have literally sent themselves into the literal shitter by designing garbage like this to fail prematurely and cost you a new mower every season. Simple solution, buy a mower with a Kohler or Kawasaki, and you’ll avoid the headaches. We bought a Cub Cadet XT1 before the price jump for 1400 dollars, and we still have it, and it’s still going strong with over 500 hours on it now. Don’t know how long it’ll go, but I know if it had a Briggs and Stratton on it, it would’ve tapped out years ago. Probably around the 150 hour mark it’d be done. I know Kawasaki is a 10,000 hr engine at least. That’s the most hrs I’ve ever heard of on one. Came from a commercial grade John Deere Z994R that was mowing a golf course. Took them 10 hours to mow it each time, and mowed it twice a week. Never had a mechanical failure, never had, a single failure of anything. Just general wear items that get replaced, oil, filters, belts, and blades, the spindles even lasted cause they were grease able type. It was quite phenomenal. Deck held up because it was cleaned after each mow. And it was the 7Iron heave duty fabricated deck.
