Wonderful wonderful video Mike! Those red and green end of the pier lighthouse colors have a very important meaning. The expression “red right returning” has long been used by seafarers as a reminder that the red lighthouse/buoys colors are kept to the starboard (right) side when proceeding from the open sea into port (upstream). Likewise, green lights are kept to the port (left) side. Also those 3 bright white spot lights on the stern are there to help it when the Captain backs up. This will be happening shortly as footers typically will back up under the Blatnik Bridge and then dock at Midwest Energy Terminal (SMET). The Captain will perform a 90 degree pivot swing just after they clear Rice's Point. Once that maneuver concludes, the backing up will begin.

@chuckg60399 ай бұрын
Hi there. The Great Lakes do experience tides but they are tiny. Spring tides are only 2 inches. But a much more relevant impact are seiches. Seiches can mimic the effects of tides, but are not caused gravity. If the wind is strong enough and consistent enough, water will actually pile up on one side of the lake. This makes the water level appear lower on the other side. Once the wind stops, the water will rebound, flowing back and forth just like in your bathtub.

Great video of heavy fog with the channel, lift bridge and the huge ship. Instruments guide the ship into the far away narrow canal passage. I am surprised there is not fog horn nearing the entrance to the channel warning of the shoreline and the passage to the lift bridge. This is one of the earliest and most wonderful thing about being in San Francisco near anywhere in the city on a foggy evening and night is the loud fog horn. It seems to blow a few times a minute through the night.
@chuckg60399 ай бұрын
The big time real deal diaphone fog horn was removed in 2006. The Coast Guard currently maintains a single toned horn. It's kind of lame....being more quiet sounding than not. Many locals call today's horn a "peanut whistle".
@chuckg60399 ай бұрын
Today mariners needing foghorn assistance must now activate the sound signal by using their marine VHF-FM radio. In one of Mike's videos I recall seeing reference to this stamped in bold letters on the South Pier Lighthouse.
@johnskelton56839 ай бұрын
Interesting seeing what I'm seeing in this video and what I'm not seeing! Fog will always present danger to vessels while in operation, especially in what this video is capturing as we see this huge vessel navigate through what for this ship, is a channel very narrow with bridges it must navigate under and pass. While radar is of most importance in this ships navigation, its alignment to the port channel entrance in this fog, failure of electronics, there glitches etc. can be mitigated for the ship well before that time and distance needed to bring a huge ship to complete stop. Many bridges having fenders attached to the structure at water level that a bridge is built upon. Ships do strike them, however it is rare! That said, a ship caused the complete failure of the Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay striking one of its supporting structures. More recently a San Francisco Oakland Bay bridge support structure was struck by a huge ship leaving port causing major damage to the fenders of that support structure damaging the ship. Here we see the lift bridge, here we see the navigation lights Mike is making reference to, however, weak illumination. What I don't see is this, this being important to aid this vessel through this narrow passage, strobe lights within the navigation lights attached to the bridge! Also this, like a runway at an airport, both strobe and fixed lights on the seawalls of this narrow channel. Perhaps those who make decisions at this port will consider implementing added navigational aid for these massive vessels egressing this port. A great video seeing a huge ship in operation while navigating through fog, now add heavy rain or much snow falling. A testament to the skill and professionalism of the captain and all seaman aboard! 🥸
@chuckg60399 ай бұрын
Hey there John. Always nice hearing from you. With the Blatnik Bridge in the Twin Ports, they use strong reinforced concrete cylinders placed directly in front of the bridge supports at water level. These would hopefully protect the bridge if a ship accidently veered off course while passing under the bridge.

Depth: 28 to 32 feet in the entrance; 27 feet deep in the iron-ore route channels, and 20 to 23 feet in the inner channels. Here’s a little more information about dredging the canal.
