I love your seed talk episodes and this one on eucalyptus was so timely for me! I grow Silver Dollar and Baby Dwarf Florist Blue from seed and this is my 3 year growing them from seed and what I’ve noticed is that Silver Dollar tends to be more robust whereas the Baby Dwarf will germinate fine but then just die off/wither one day out of the blue after it’s grown to an inch high. The leaves get brown and crispy even though they get the same amount of light and watering. I don’t know if it’s a fungal disease or what but the Baby Dwarf seem to be more susceptible.

I'm in zone 4b, I dug my eucalyptus baby blue (6-7 plants) and silver plate (8-9 plants) out of the ground and over wintered them in my basement with grow lights. The largest pot size I used was for one of my largest silver plate. I used a 5 or 10 gal pot for it. Half of my baby blue are still alive and only one of my silver plate died. Can't wait to get them back outside into the ground. I ordered baby blue bouquet plugs this year and I am growing some parvuli gum too since January.

@mimlauj6869
@mimlauj6869 Жыл бұрын
@@jenniferfisher1743 I used half pro mix and half pine bark. Be aware I did deal with fungus gnats. I used the yellow sticky sheets and used gnatrol and kept my watering to a minimum. They do need a lot of light, I placed mine in my finished basement next to large windows and still supplemented with LED shop lights over heard.

Just wanted to share my home garden eucalyptus story. Many years ago i bought a eucalyptus plant in a 4 inch pot at a local garden center. I planted it on the south side of my house in zone 7b North Carolina. It came back bigger every year. The bigger it got, the faster it grew. Within about 5 years it started to push the foundation of my house up. The foundation cracked and the drywall inside the house began to crack. It happened fast. So I guess the moral of the story is: Do not plant it close to your foundation if you are in a warm climate where it turns into a tree.

Oh my goodness - how scary! 😱 Thanks so much for sharing this cautionary tale with everyone! It is hard to imagine a small seedling turning into a tree, but - as your story demonstrates - it can and will happen 🌳 Thanks again for watching and sharing your story! Have a wonderful evening 🤗

Same with wisteria, in the south, they have taken over the natural ecosystem. Vining plants are basically impossible to kill. They will bust through a basement or foundation blocks away from the original plant. They, like Wisteria, are basically uncontrollable in lower states thanks to the temperatures. They don't warn people they are really trees in their natural environment. I'm glad you are spreading your experience!

I am in 7b as well and started a few varieties of eucalyptus from seed, silver dollar, willow and another. The willow grew to 10' the first year. I wish I would have known this before and put it in a more appropriate spot in the garden. I saw off about 8' off the top each year. We had a very cold winter this year and it has a lot of damaged leaves. I need to figure out how much I can trim off vs how much will come back this spring.

Seeded Eucalyptus is an older plant that is producing seeds. You would need older mature plants growing in zone 9 or 10 to get seeds. Think of an oak tree. They need to be tall, older trees to produce acorns (seeds). You don’t get that growing eucalyptus overwintered in a high tunnel or field as an annual.

Thanks for the great video. Those yields sound exceptional (definitely higher than our hightunnel crop in Ontario). Are those yields at that 12" spacing? Our wholesalers expect about 30" stems. Would that many stems reach those lengths?

I am a home gardeners and have two seeds that made it during the germination process. I am planning on growing mine in pots to bring in over winter. What type of potting soil do you recommend, traditional mix or succulent mix? Do the plants like to dry out between watering?

Hello, Jennifer! Dave said to water eucalyptus plants like you would any other crop (do not drown them but also do not let them be dry for extended periods of time). Regular potting mix is probably fine, as long as it is not perpetually wet or soggy. Best of luck, and have a great day! 🤗

I grew eucalyptus last year for the first time and encountered bumps on the leaves as well and we didn’t end up being able to use our plants because of it. I think it is oedema, a condition that affects the transpiration in the leaves. Perhaps too much humidity.
