This is quickly becoming one of my favorite KZbin channels! The way you present information, go through processes in real time, and show the results is so helpful. Also, I lived in Chambersburg, PA for a few years and was able to visit Hershey gardens... definitely get there if you get a chance, it's beautiful!

Did you know that the lids from parmessan cheese containers fit regular mouth mason jars? They are great for flipping open the spoon opening when measuring out your mixes or opening the shaker side when you want to shake the ingredients, such as ranch mix, onto your food. I kept seeing on different channels that they were using Redmond Real Salt Season Salt and loved it. I refused to pay almost $9 for a small bottle so I decided to just try and make it. (Sounds crazy I know since I didn't know what it tasted like) but I mixed it up and it has truly become our #1 favorite season salt and we use it on everything. Here's the recipe if anyone's interested! Season Salt 1/2 cup Redmond salt 1/4 cup Onion Powder 1/4 cup Garlic Powder 1/4 cup Ground Coriander 1/4 cup Ground Mustard 1/4 cup Celery Seed (I grind mine) 1/4 cup Black Pepper, 1/4 cup Paprika 1/4 cup Turmeric 1/4 cup Parsley

Oh my gosh thank you for sharing this sausage seasoning recipe mix!! I moved from the US to Scotland and they do not have American breakfast sausages. Since then I have been playing around with seasoning try to to get it right, but not quite getting it. This is fantastic! Thank you. While I no longer eat meat, I have begun making an imitation breakfast sausage using cooked oatmeal that I allow to go cold (just using oats, water and a pinch of salt). When it goes cold, it becomes a sticky mess, I add the seasoning and mix it well. I keep meaning to try adding the seasoning while the oats are still warm to see if that works any better or not but forget at the time, I then form the oat mixture into patties and fry them in a cast iron skillet with a little oil until they get browned on each side. I really enjoy them and your seasoning mix has been a game changer! I no longer dream of sausage patties from home! Now if I could find a recipe for making egg roll skins I would be happy as I would not have to wait once a year to get the foods from home thatI miss. But I just had to come back and thank you for sharing! ❤🙏

@@shelleysmith4017 For vegan sausage, I use a base of the following (I use uncooked oatmeal in mine), which makes either 4 large burger sized patties, or 8 small breakfast sausage sized ones. Just add a half batch of your sausage seasoning mix to the dry ingredients, at the start. Once mixed, let it sit for about 5 minutes, before forming the patties. What makes these better than using just cooked oatmeal patties is that the nutritional profile of mine more closely matches real meat, including the protein (from the TVP and nut butter) and vitamin B-12 (from the nutritional yeast). - 1 cup textured vegetable protein (TVP) - 1/4 cup quick-cooking rolled oats (NOT instant or old fashioned) - 3/4 cup water (almost-boiling) - 2 tablespoons ketchup - 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or Liquid Aminos) - 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter (can also use tahini, or any other nut or seed butter) - 1/4 cup whole wheat flour - 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast

@shelleysmith40 I'm from the west, California and arizona. I now live in virginia. They don't have foods in the East like they do in the west. They don't make sausage here like they do in the west with sage. I feel your pain. 🙂
@shelleysmith4017
@shelleysmith4017 9 ай бұрын
@@JanineMJoi it is weird, isn’t it? And sage is one of the first things you think of when you think of sausage. If you haven’t, try having a look online to the north of VA into New England as you might find something close to the west coast sausage with sage in it. Especially the country farming sites.They can often ship it overnight in a special chill box, if you are really struggling with a craving from home. It is not something you would think would be so different in the same country, would you. I have a friend who gets homesick for breakfast meats from New England, she is now down in FL and once a year, just before Xmas, she places a big order of different sausages and bacon because “they just don’t make it right” in the south, in her opinion lol. So it could be worth a shot. I feel your pain as well, so close and yet so far lol. Someone needs the come up with a shop for east and west coast foods for those who made such a massive move.

I’m another older lady and I’m on a disability pension , one day I made some family size meals for my 2 year old grandson , dividing it up into snack size ziplock bags and froze them .. I made a tuna pasta bake , curried sausages and rice , a cottage pie and a savoury chicken dish with rice , all with several vegetables in them …I ended up with about 80 small meals for him .. One day when I was very sore and tired I thought I’d try one of his meals and with a slice of crusty bread it was just right ( I often eat too much just because it’s there ) so easy and quick . I worked out the cost and it was something crazy like 30 cents a serving ….now that is all I eat for my dinners ….I have a yoghurt for breakfast , a sandwich for lunch and a hot dinner ……it has saved me so much money having them in the freezer and I’m eating healthier and only a plate to wash after dinner 😊

@@1nicenurseI make simple foods and I use the regular recipes I have always made for my family, not special GF ones. I have always cooked from scratch so I just substitute a GF flour blend for the regular flour. GF can be a bit dry, so often just adding a spoonful of yogurt or sour cream to a regular recipe is enough to fix it. I buy from Vitacost and their house brand flours are good and economical. I get a 2 lb box of GF flour blend for the price of a 1 lb bag at the grocery store. The only thing you probably need a gf recipe for is bread and there are lots of websites but I don't make bread. I make a single serving bread for my toast by mixing 1 Tbls almond flour, 1 Tbls gf flour, 1/4 tsp baking powder, one egg and a dash of olive oil. Can add cinnamon, berries or other flavorings. 🍪 I've seen folks add molasses to sugar to make brown sugar. Rendering molasses as a byproduct of sugar is a step in the process of making refined sugars from sugar cane. Adding molasses to refined white sugar is simply adding back what was once taken away. If you're making brown sugar for an isolated recipe, you can just add granulated sugar to the recipe and then add a desired amount of molasses without having to mix them together ahead of time. You can also get away with just using refined white sugar if you don't have molasses. It does impart a delicious flavor for many recipes.

@theoffice6641 stuff a taper candle inside for an easy hack, or buy wicks & spoon the crisco into jars. If you heat the crisco, it will go rancid, & shorten the shelf life, so you probably want to avoid that & a few air pockets won't matter that much. You can also get terra cotta pots & make emergency heaters for just a few more pennies... look these things up on KZbin

really appreciate the way your present your information. i am a bit older than yourself and have done the same things for many, many years (ouch) it has saved me a ton of money over the years. a book that is old but has helped me a lot is Make Your Own Convenience Food, by Don and Joan German. 1979. In the 70's it was very strongly suggested to eat organic and make as much food as you can, so there was a push to combine convenience and home cooking and health as much as possible. so check out the old books. i am a first time viewer but will subscribe. thanks.

Great info - would love to hear all the ways you use this and what you add to the dry mix to complete: how much eggs, milk, etc. I was totally shocked to make my first batch of brown sugar - it was SOOOOOO easy and tasted way better than store bought. If you look on the ingredients of store bought it says, sugar and molasses. Easy peasy. Now I need to get busy copying your recipes! I also found out how easy it is to make your own baking powder.

Great video. I learned from people who live in remote places to purchase most used ingredients in bulk. Less trips to a store. I don't live in a remote place but in looking at prices saw the savings. While I don't even have the space to house 25lb or 50lb sacks of anything I used the same idea smaller scale. I call it an extended pantry. I use gallon, 1/2 gallon, quart and pint jars. I buy my spices and herbs by the pound. Fill my easy to use regular spice/herb jars and store remaining bulk in suitable jar. I was blessed with a huge buffet and hutch which I refurbished and the cabinets serve as my "extended" pantry. I do have a regular pantry and most of my ingredients are in qt. and 1/2 gallon jars. I make my own dry onion soup mix, ranch dressing and taco seasoning mixes. I found "hamburger helper" seasoning recipes online and make those too. Buying bulk makes it easy.

I love our pancake and waffle mix. It makes it easy to mix up batter when you need it. I keep mason jar mixes but don’t mix them in the mixer first. I do corn bread, scones, applesauce bread, chocolate chip muffins, molasses cookies, beer bread and peasant bread. I also make my own bread crumbs which I keep with my mixes. I always make our Taco Seasoning Mix. Something in the store- bought ones, actually all the numerous brands I've ever tried, makes me feel ill after eating-- no idea what is in them that doesn't agree with me! Making your own anything certainly gives you knowledge and control! I love the one in the "Make A Mix" cookbook referenced by some others in your comments. I've used other mixed as well in various seasons of life and where we've lived, including pancake, biscuit, rice-a- roni, cookie and brownie mixes. Just had my first experience with brown sugar going hard, so the reminder that is not difficult to m-y-o was timely and most likely will be put to good use!

If you have a food dryer, you can dry celery, carrots, green or red peppers, mushrooms - powder them and store with a little salt (to preserve) and some arrowroot to prevent caking (I keep the mushroom separate on its own, because hubby doesn't like mushroom); only need a small amount per stew/casserole or gravy mix; adjust for salt to taste when cooking. I dried onions once. I think the house still smells like onion 2 months later, so dry them out in the garage, garlic too lol. But any vegetable, herb or leaf like bay, can be dried, powdered and stored. Dried goods, you don't need a lot to flavour dishes, so they can go a long way. P.S. no need to process to powder form if you like them whole, or slightly bigger in size, e.g. parsley "flakes".
