The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth that depicts the image of a buried man and is believed by some to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. Its existence has been known from at least the 14th century, and has been treated by some as a religious relic. The shroud has been the subject of ongoing controversy and its authenticity is disputed. But a handful of biblical historians and scientists point out that evidence suggests it is not a medieval work of art nor a clever forgery. Whatever the origin of the shroud, it remains a curious religious icon that has for centuries garnered the interest of Christians.
Dr. Ben Witherington III discusses evidence for the shroud's authenticity.

You should also look into the Sudarium of Oviedo, said to be a cloth placed over the face of Jesus after His crucifixion and removed after His body was placed in the Shroud. The blood types on both are the same and the pattern of blood stains seems to match from one to the other.

About the carbon 14 dating - some resarchers, a married couple from USA discovered, that the samples taken for examination in laboratory actually consisted of linen and cotton. Their and the textile experts said that the Shroud was repaired this way in middle ages, using cotton patches via method so called "invisible interweaving", to get the effect of as it wasn't even damaged. The repair was made in XVIth century. But it's interesting that you mention the fire though.

This is easy if you know scripture & ancient Jewish practices. How did the shroud imprint a full beard when scripture tells us the Jewish leaders plucked it out before crucifixion? Jewish historical records show men condemned to death always had their beards torn from their faces to humiliate them. This matches what Isaiah 50:6 describes about the suffering their coming Messiah would endure: “I gave my back to the smiters, *and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair.* I hid not my face from shame and spitting.” The reason the shroud exists is so the Catholic Church can have a relic to display in one of their cathedrals. God specifically said in the 2nd commandment not to have graven images. The shroud is that. No scriptures for reference were used in the above video.

Thank you. It is beautifully explained. Here is a simple question. How was the shroud held perfectly flat over the face of Jesus? Otherwise the the shroud would have to drape over Our Lord's face, thus creating a very different (even distorted) image. Try it by painting you face, then drape a fabric over it, remove and compare the resultant imprinted image to your actual face. It just does not match. The resultant image is highly distorted. Blessings.

Also, think about the testimony of John’s gospel, where Peter and John enter the tomb, and John describes that His head covering was folded up and set in a place other than the body covering. Since this account describes that the head covering was separate from the body covering, to me it is doubtful that he Shroud of Turin could contain Jesus’ image, since the bodily fluids would have been absorbed by the head covering, not the body covering. In addition, do not discount the possibility that Satan could have been instrumental in the creation of this image, so as to focus many on the object, rather than on the Person supposedly shown. I, for one, will stay with the Biblical account until the DNA is tested and found to match either James’, or the blood found on the Ark of the Covenants’ Mercy Seat by Ron Wyatt.

When I saw this face from Turin grave cloth for the first time, the cross in the face struck me. The nose and the upper forehead / Eyebrow traverse line - and extension of the nose line upwards. There are brighter areas. Me they appeared in the fraction of a second, in a cross shape. Add to this the number "3", the photo-negative. In the original, on the shroud, it is reversed. Do you see the cross on the face too? As one commentator said, striking is the weave pattern (herringbone), I had to immediately think of the fishermen brothers. (Perhaps only my eyes can see the cross. That would be possible.) It may be that only my eyes can see this cross in the face. I see a cross of light. There are some brighter areas. The nose. The front-forehead (Eyebrow traverse line) and the extension of the nose line upwards. Clearly a cross. Therefore, I believe in the authenticity of the grave cloth. The face that I see in the photo of Secondo Pia is painless. There is also no hatred or anger in it. I see peace and confidence in this face. It looks like meditating. Anyway, I see it in peace. The pain is overcome.I think, it is the fisherman "Andreas", "the spiritual Jesus". He teached in Capernaum, in Aramaic.

The primary objection was that radiocarbon dating shows the Shroud to have been created in the Middle Ages. However, further investigation showed that the area where the samples were taken from were a mix of linen (the Shroud material) and cotton that had been skillfully interwoven to be virtually invisible. As such, the carbon dating is off. There have been any number of other attempts, such as saying that the image on the shroud could've been created using a bas-relief sculpture and ochre pigment but this fails on several counts, not least of which is that instruments sensitive to 1 part per million determined that there is no ochre on the Shroud, ie it isn't a painting precisely as is said. The Shroud is probably the single most tested and studied artifact in the world and we're no closer to coming to a definitive explanation now than when the first picture was taken of it. In general, the skeptics rely on making a case on superficialities that people who've studied the Shroud intensely know to be bad arguments.

it was carbon dated and shown to be from the 13th to 14th century, coincidentally the time that it first appears in history. no-one has actually refuted this dating despite many attempts. most notably, some claim that the area that was tested was actually a later repair. the problem with this is that no one has ever shown evidence of a repair. it's claimed that the repair was 'invisible', but no such technique exists to repair a piece of cloth without leaving evidence of repair, usually visible to the naked eye close up

"This much we know for sure, that there was no technology to produce a negative image of a human being on a cloth at that point in time in early medieval history." Joe Nickell has created a negative image of a human being on a cloth which very much resembles the shroud image using ochre pigment and only techniques that would have been available to artists in early medieval history.

@@DEE-qu5mc And even if it could be shown that the shroud was not created in the manner Nickell has demonstrated, what would be your explanation for the origin of the image? I have yet to hear any feasible explanation from shroud believers. Most shroud believers seem to think it is the burial cloth of Jesus. Thousands of people were crucified by the Romans in 1st century Palestine. What leads you to believe this image is of Jesus? We have no physical description of Jesus to match to the shroud. We have no mention of the shroud in any gospel or by any early church father. Question: Why do think that the DNA samples for Jesus and James should match? The James Ossuary says that James is the son of Joseph (and presumably not of Mary) but Jesus isn't a blood relative of Joseph. So don't Jesus and James not have a blood relation if James is a relative through Joseph?
@MrMiz1113
@MrMiz1113 5 жыл бұрын
They shouldn't; Jesus has no earthly father so they would be no blood relation. Second, I'm largely sure that it isn't possible to completely, perhaps even partially, reconstruct any DNA from the Shroud to make a test anyways.

Aaron Barr My point was the inscription on the ossuary May have been totally consistent with the practice. Do we have any other ossuary that includes both mother and father? James son of Joseph is likely totally consistent with practice at that time. The fact it doesn’t include Mary’s name is meaningless and doesn’t be necessity indicate Mary is not the mother. We also know Jesus had half brothers, Mary was not a perpetual virgin. That dogma would likely not have come from the apostles, but rather later church fathers who muddied up a good deal of Christian theology.
