Seeing A Psychiatrist For Autism?

We've been asked what a psychiatrist does for our daughter with autism. Mostly they address the medicinal needs that can't be helped any other way. This appointment was probably the hardest we've ever had. Abbie's psychiatrist was one of a kind and will be missed! The app I'm using is called Abridge. Nonetheless, it’s obvious to me that the psychiatrist treats their patients for basic human needs, and the BT’s are there to work on ASD related needs. I know how you feel about him. I lost my son at 16 years old and he would be 43 now but his doctor was awesome like that. We thought we finally had his meds down pat and after 3 years of zero seizures he died from a seizure and drown in the bathtub. Our neurologist was from New Orleans and we traveled twice a year to see him and we were supposed to go the next day after he died. Our doctor was crushed because he missed the entire funeral because his answering service never passed the message on until about 5 days had passed....He offered to fly down and talked to my son’s school mates to help them deal with his death as this all happened around a week before school was to start that year. We buried him in the clothes he had chosen for first day of school. Love you guys and may the lord bless your doctor. 💋🧚🏻‍♀️❤️🇺🇸

I'm so sorry for your loss. I watched what my parents went through losing a child so I can kind of relate. My brother passed from an aneurysm one month before turning 21. It's amazing when you find a doctor like that. It seems like caring doctors are far and few between.

When my son's child psychiatrist graduated him out to a different program it was horrific. Our doctor was like yours, just the best! He not only helped my son, but when we found out I had cancer, he told my other two kids that if they ever needed to talk to him, they could call. He was just amazing. I feel your pain.

I have had chronic health issues for most of my life. Losing a beloved, competent dr that you know hears you is the worst. I have faith that you will find a new dr that you’ll love too; it just will take time. It’s sad to lose a member of your team but remember how blessed you were to have them for as long as you did. ❤️

I had to be trained in ABA just so I could help my son and I survive. We are much more peaceful and calm at home now. He even tells me his feelings. That would not have happened without ABA work to control the big behaviors.

I totally get it. My psychiatrist moved to a city about an hour away. For me, I just can't make that drive every month. I was so nervous when looking for a new psychiatrist and therapist. I finally found the best Dr and therapist I could ever imagine. They're amazing. Sending love yalls way. I know its hard putting trust into someone else after having the best if the best for so long. I'm not autistic but I do have three mental health disorders.

My 16YO sees his psychiatrist almost weekly for talk therapy and meds (guanficine, adhansia, Zoloft). I had never heard of a psychiatrist providing therapy before we found ours but he is amazing. Most importantly, my son trusts and respects him. I agree, Pricilla, when doctors listen to you, it means everything. Thank you for doing what you do. I love watching Abbey's sweet face and your interactions with her.

Priscilla you look so tan, natural and beautiful. I so understand the emotional road at the end of a medical journey. My son was diagnosed with Grand-Mal seizures at 3 months then diagnosed with T1D at 2.8 yrs. old , he us now 21 and has had the same endocrinologist & neurologist from day 1, and we now have to shift to adult Dr's., I was teary eyed.

My take on medication in psychiatry: When your body is not capable to produce enough of a certain substance, let's say insulin, you use medication to support your body. So when your body isn't capable to keep the chemicals in your brain balanced, you can use medication to support it. Psychiatry is often considered a non physical thing. Altering how the brain works, with medication, is often considered as altering the person himself. With a balanced brain, a person can blossom to its full potential. Living with the feeling that something is restraining you, is devastating.

If you want Abigail to get to the next level (i.g. investigating the root cause of her aphasia) you shouldn't be seeing an ordinary general psychiatrist, you need to see someone who has a UCNS Board Certification for Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry. For Jacksonville, Florida, there are only two physicians meeting this requirement, Nilufer Taner, MD, PhD and Philip W. Tipton, MD, both with the Mayo Clinic. Has Abigail ever had a trial of levetiracetam, or been evaluated for epileptic encephalopathy? I'm formally diagnosed with ASD, with level 3 support needs. However, after undergoing experimental trials with Keppra (levetiracetam) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to reactivate my left frontal lobe and language center of my brain we are seeing major improvements in my ability to communicate with others and perform ADLs.

I have chronic pain. I saw an amazing neurologist who was helping me through the pain for a long time. The hospital shut down the adult pain clinic because there are not enough of us in pain to keep them open. WHAT? It was the psychiatry department helping me through...cognitive, physical, and medical (meds) as well. Behavioral Health needs to be taken more seriously. Praying just the right doc comes along and can continue to help you all through this journey.

And I agree with the ABA thing, I see all of these people who despise ABA and only know the bits they have heard from others who despise it, and they offer no solutions for the people who greatly benefit. Very few people in ABA are not in OT, Speech, And PT as well, so those are not replacements at all and ABA is recommended by most Occupational and Speech therapists who believe it is needed for the individual because they know they are not a replacement or compensation for ABA. I am in a group of around 1,000 other Autistic Adults (it was at 600 2 weeks ago and is fairly new so it’s growing fast) who are fighting to let the NT population know that plenty of us believe ABA is well supported by both science and a large majority of Autistics who have experienced it within the past 15 years, and the opportunity should not be taken from those who need it❤️

I had the same doctor from two to 19 (or even 20 I can't remember) but it made me so sad to leave him. Like y'all said people move on, but it can be hard after so long. I started saying a few years back that I wanted my kids to go see him and I found out last year that one of the little boys I take care of at work goes to see him! I was so happy to hear that because that’s possibly the closest I'm going to get to having my kids go see him, I don't have kids yet, but boys and girls from work are my kids so I’ll take it.

It’s so hard and emotional when a dr that has been such a huge part of you’re journey leaves! Our paediatrician of 13yrs retired 2 years ago and I was devastated 😭 he had been one of our biggest supporters and helped us so much as a family of 4 asd , special needs children. I honestly wish he was still our paediatrician now as we navigate our new journey of our 2 boys receiving an extremely rare terminal genetic condition. Also having a dr on you’re team that supports you not wanting to just add more meds for everything is becoming hard to find, well here in Australia it is. I’ve had a bad doctor that didn’t listen to me. It caused some major issue to the point that sometimes I think things are all in my head when it’s actually a real and serious issue. I finally switched doctors to one that listens to me and works with me. I don’t know what I would do if I lost her. Y’all are doing a great job making sure Abbie has the best possible team!

My 5 year old, Hannah, with Down Syndrome and Autism had an ENT appointment today and the doctor told me that she is retiring. I was devastated. She is similar to Abigail’s doctor. Truly listens to the parents and genuinely takes the parents thoughts and ideas seriously.

Any therapy (or lack of therapy) is an individual choice, for many conditions. I have a rare genetic metabolism disorder and my decision for treatment was and is mine individually. It is what works best for me and my family. I agree 100% with your decision on what's best for you all.

I really appreciate & respect the fact that you all have come thru the struggle of Abby's sleeping issues, without aleays resulting to sleep medications. I've dealt with sleeping issues for so many years of my life and have resulted to stopping & staying away from medications to sleep. It's not easy by any means especially when you deal with so many health complications. I'm proud of us for pushing thru. Medications are sometimes necessary, but not always the best options. They can cause more issues than I had realized. Appreciate your family sharing your lives, tough times, and grace in thriving to the your best abilities. 👌🏾

I’m almost 18 and after years of masking and trouble fitting in with my peers and then learning somehow about autism and adhd and then months of deep Research for both conditions i came to the conclusion I have both. The problem is my parents are in denial and won’t take me to an official diagnosis and can’t afford it(they always knew i’m “weird” but never considered autism or adhd since i started talking really early and knew things beyond my age and was a top student in school until highschool and they have the misconception that adhd=trouble making student and i’ve always been really quiet dreamy and shy but like many times i cope with sensory overload by spacing out and mentally detaching myself from everything). The thing is i’m entering the last year of highschool and have a bunch of exams and college application and i just Pray and hope i won’t burnout bcuz i have really perfectionistic tendencies and i feel close to exploding

I saw my last psychiatrist for 13 years before he retired at the age of 70 he was the most wonderful man!! He was also CD a turning point for me so it was sad to see him go.... I went without a psychiatrist artist for two years then met an amazing lady around my own age who is brilliant... neither better or worse than the other although very very different in their approach they both have the common goal of helping me to be at my optimal functioning level.... I have gone from being on disability for 10 years to now working full time

I lost a therapist I only saw a handful of times, and that was rough enough. I can't imagine losing someone that amazing who's been with you that long. Also, as one of the "quiet" ones, when people are going off about being against something, a lot of us will just stay out of it. There's no point in trying to discuss or reason with people like that and it's not worth the effort or being attacked for being anything other than irate.

My brother is on the spectrum and LOVES his psychiatrist and therapist. He's had the same psychologist and therapist for six years. He even figured out how to do virtual appointments when his therapist moved offices and when COVID started. My family was also against medication, but the medications his therapist has recommended and his psychiatrist has prescribed have helped him amazingly! No stigma again psychiatry here :)

I was against meds at the beginning as well. But then I came to realization that my son was miserable. He was not living in a positive way. After trial and error with medications. He is thriving and happy and living life in a positive way. He has become verbal with medication and also has a chance now with academics.

when my son was diagnosed with ADHD, we really battled with the idea of putting him on medication. Then a very smart person said “If your son was diabetic, would you give him insulin?” It really opened my eyes. We decided to give him medicine and it was the best decision for him!

I was misdiagnosed with bipolar and saw one of the best specialists in the country in that field. I actually have autism, depression and anxiety but my behaviors mimicked that of bipolar. The lack of sleep the crying the hissy fits and the depressive episodes. Still that psychiatrist was amazing even though be got it wrong. He ended up moving to a place where he could help more people and so I saw someone else for a little while before just beginning to see a therapist who I am still seeing who has helped me even more. I'm not saying my first psychiatrist didn't help me. I saw him from the time I was 5 until I was 18 years old. He was amazing. He just couldn't figure out that the reason my meds weren't working the way he expected was because I was autistic not bipolar. That's only because that's not his field. He did help us so so much but finding out I was autistic and needed anxiety meds rather than mood stabilizers has changed my life for the better.

Totally wish you guys could come down to Tallahassee to visit my doctor she is amazing with autistic patients. She does amazing with me and I know she would be amazing with Abbie. She really takes the time to work with me and and is really similar to Abbie’s current doctor. She only does tel a med too but truly is amazing doctor has helped me get in the right medication to help me succeed.

I’m so sorry. I have been with my doctor for 20+ years. He has moved 3 times and I’ve followed driving as far and an hour and a half each way in order to stay with him. He knows me like no one else. I’m blessed to have such an amazing doctor with such compassion and knowledge who TrueType cares. Sooo, i completely get where you at. When we find an amazing doc they become like family. I’m sad for you, but I’m also sad for ALL the kids he could help and parents he could support. So sad. I’ll be praying you find a new doc that you can establish a working relationship with. Hugs

I had the same feelings when 4 months ago, my family Dr. (30 years), had to close his practice due to his an unexpected health issue. I have been struggling to find a new one. He was an amazing guy. I feel your pain.

So.. I don’t have anybody in my personal life who has Autism (that I know of), but I want you guys to know that I watch these videos religiously. I myself contracted polio at four months old from the vaccine,which led me with a lot of mobility issues and if we’re being honest a lot of emotional issues too (I’m 32, located on Long Island-so obviously I’ve never met another person anywhere near close to my age with this). Often while watching this I think of how I wish my parents knew to advocate and educate for me. Thank you for this and keep doing what you’re doing! Love you all!!

My husband is a Psychologist and really promotes meds of all kinds and individualizes it to fit each patient. He finds it most important to really listen to each patient, make a treatment plan and follow up follow up follow up! Like you said, what works for Abbie may not work for someone else.

I have a little one that has never slept through the night and has been on several medications to no results or adverse reactions so now doctor has ordered ritalin for his ADHD and then sleep meds for asd sleep and pharmacy doesn't want to order because its expensive 😫😫, he is also in ABA therapy For which I had heard nothing but negative things about My son has been in therapy since he was 3 months old speech therapy ot physical therapy early interventions at my wits and I concluded that maybe ABA therapy will help it has been a true blessing thank you for yells videos and information and by the way thank you for recommending the bridge app it has been great especially when he is in the appointment I have something to go back to and listen to I can't think you enough For all that y'all do

My daughter is 13 and has Autism. She is considered level 1/mild. She’s verbal, independent at home (besides cooking and maybe getting all the shampoo out of her hair). Our family never wanted her on meds. But it got bad. We ended up doing so at around 8 years old. We tried many. She was also being bullied for being different by students in her 2nd grade classroom and her regular education teacher. We ended up pulling her and we got her help as she had suicidal tendencies. We moved to another school and when they had issues with her, or didn’t want to deal with her, we never saw redirection. It was did she have her meds. She then had a teacher make her an example in front of her whole 3rd grade class. She was just not happy in brick and mortar school and they always said she was “too high functioning autistic” for the autism classroom but she didn’t fit in in the regular education classroom. We pulled her and started her on virtual charter school 4 years ago, got her completely off medication, and started on cbd oil as needed. There are still days that can be bad, but she’s doing so much better and able to now learn at her own pace.

So glad you were able to find a plan that works for her. We only had our "HF-ASD" child in a traditional school for one year, and while she had a fantastic classroom teacher, two years later we're still hearing new stories of things she's just now willing and able to talk about.

10:00 i had this same process with myself and antidepressants where i was scared about being medicated bc of the stigma when i really needed them. ive been on them for a few years now and im so glad ive been on them theyve literally saved my life

I really didn’t acknowledge the fact that a dr who actually listens to you is very important especially those in the IDD community. The moment I realized it was important was between my senior of college and my first time choosing my dr on my own. During college I was extremely lethargic and was difficult to breathe. My college dr said it was because of my sinuses, even though I was fine in that area. Then she said it was depression and anxiety (I’ve been taking my medicine) Then the summer that I graduated I was walking home where the symptoms got so intense and rushed myself to the ER. EKG and a chest x-ray they yet again said allergies gave me an inhaler and a surprise 2k medical bill. Well two weeks later I went to my first dr appointment told her I had autism (helps me sus out the doctor) she immediately did a full blood panel and found out I had hypoglycemia and an extreme vitamin d deficiency. A couple weeks later I was feeling great! If you feel like your doctor isn’t on your team it’s okay to find a new doctor.

This was such an interesting informative video. My daughter is 4. She was tested and qualified for speech therapy. She's smart but talks more like a 2 year old. Her doctor won't do any testing for autism or anything disorders because she is young. I am just learning, taking notes, and taking precautions in case there is something more than just a delay in speech.

I feel the same way you do about the haters if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. I am a mother of four children, I have had criticisms about the way I raise my children, they are now for well-adjusted human beings so don't let anyone tell you how to raise your children whether "special needs" or not, no one knows what your children need more than you do. I hope you guys find a new psychiatrist is amazing as the old one is. I understand this because my daughter had a specialist for most of her life I want to say over 20 years and he retired and it just about killed us. None of my children are Autistic, but we had the greatest Pediatrician. He was so gentle, kind and always took time to answer my questions. My kids just loved him. When my son turned 16 and aged out of going to the Pediatrician, he cried when I told him we needed to find a new doctor for him. Dr. Boon. I miss seeing him.

What does Abbie take for sleep? Benzos (and Ambien) cause problems in sleep (brainwaves) - nothing too terrible and still generally preferable to haloperidol or Thorazine. You give her the best possible care, so I reckon whatever she takes is presently the best option. I bet you did your homework on Seroquel too - no taking a doctor's word for you guys! :) PSA: sleeping over six hours at once can be deleterious; it's preferable to sleep six hours at night and the remainder during the afternoon.
