I must say as long as I have been doing carpenter work you do show excellent instructional videos. I myself when I do tongue and groove I use adhesive on the floor and nail about every 5 boards it depends on the width of the floor or the job itself. I can tell on your videos that you use some old carpenter school tricks of the trade my dad and I use to this day. Excellent videos!!

What's great about this video is that it provides an understanding of what's happening when nail guns are used during a floor install. I had an idea of what they do, but now that I need add a small landing extension to my floor and I do not want to go buy a nail gun just for that, it's really reassuring seeing it done by hand in this video. After seeing this, I'm sure that I can do this myself and it'll look great the first time.

Leah has such a wonderful way of getting her knowledge into your head, after listening you really want to replicate what you just heard and imagine almost everyone would do a pretty good job of it. Me , I'd really enjoy sitting and speaking with her, it would be very enjoyable. If only grade school teachers could come across as well, many kids would excel rather than get left behind. Great videio. Pre-drilling can also be helpful in preventing splitting of the boards when nailing by hand. You can even pre-drll the boards ahead of time before you lay the boards down. if you are hand nailing, this will make the nailing easier and faster even if splitting is not a problem. For those of us with bad knees this will save time and pain.

Great video Leah, I'm slightly confused as to how this works. It looks like the nail is just going into the tongue piece. How does it help secure the groove? Thanks
@PilotPlater
@PilotPlater 8 жыл бұрын
+HeyPockyWay it doesn't. The key is that each piece is nailed to the floor at the tounge, so the tounge/groove can't slide apart. Since the tounge is nailed to the floor, the groove attached to it is then also secure from lifting because they are tightly fit together.
@heypockyway6652
@heypockyway6652 8 жыл бұрын
+Andy Plater Riiiight, so the tongue section is nailed to the floor and the groove covers up the nail, making it blind. Got it. Thanks

@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 8 жыл бұрын
+Fran L Hello Fran, Furring strips in combination with the tongue and groove panels could bump out the surface as much as 1 1/2 "......wall studs run vertically, so attaching furring strips horizontally will give you a solid nailer.

The only thing I'd change is to lose the block of wood you used to hammer the boards together and use an offcut with the tongue cut off. It reduces the risk of damaging the wood to zero.

She forgot to mention there are ALWAYS a one roll of surface nailing on the first piece put down that will show. It will be along the groove side. In addition to that, on flooring there might be 2 or 3 rolls of surface nailing because you can't get the nailer or even a swing a hammer up against a wall.
