Wish using virus to kill bacteria would get more airtime. Incredibly, its even more effective for antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria (they can only have 1 resistance, effectively chemicals or predators) and thus are more vulnerable to macrophage viruses, problem being you need the specific virus for the specific bacteria. But more and more countries are doing quite well with this and some solutions to make it more viable are being done. I believe Romania or some former Soviet country prefers them to antibiotics when possible.

There are a few things in medicine that frighten me. Necrotizing fasciitis is one of those things. I have been involved with several cases and it is always amazing just how quickly this infection spreads through the body, AND how much tissue you have to remove to get ahead of this problem. Thanks for informing the general public on this rare, but challenging problem.

I'm currently healing from a fasciotomy just now, I badly broke my leg and so they cut it open because of compartment syndrome, they had to insert a metal rod, steel plates, give me a skin graft and a blood transfusion too-keeping the area clean has been right at the front of my mind since leaving the hospital last week. My partners brother in law said my leg looks like a shark attack 😂

My aunt had this 9 years ago from a small bite on her elbow. She was told to call us to say her goodbyes as they felt she had only a 10% chance of surviving her surgery. She went from being OK to almost dying in 2 days. She's lucky to be alive now but lost most of the flesh on her arm and it came across her chest and breast as well.

Wow, that's an incredible mix of unlucky to have gotten the infection but *very* lucky to survive! I wouldn't bet on those odds for $5, let alone a life! From what I've heard it's really rare for someone to survive if it spreads to the torso or chest or anywhere away from extremities since it's close to vital organs and the infected flesh can't be amputated off or trimmed away as easily. It sounds like luckily in her case it had stayed a bit closer to the surface or just in fleshy areas so it was removable. Kudos to her surgeons for an operation well done! Thank god she was able to beat the odds!

The surgeons were excellent but they went down to bone essentially, they initially thought they would amputated the arm or hand but she still has both but the lost 1/2 of one breast and 1/3 of the other, she was quite large chest so maybe that gave her more time, but she was incredibly lucky to have survived, she's gone through over 20 surgerys since to move fat to the affected areas to rebuild that damage and skin grafts as well.

I was a medic in the army in toronto just starting out and signed up for an opportunity for Over seas tours. I thought, my Nursing schooling had not taught much on immunology and pathogenesis of some diseases. So I went to my schools library and picked up some textbooks on relative subjects to the regions I had requested. I was so praising God I had. I went to visit my folks one day and my dad had a weeping wound on his arm. Just happened to be that in one of those text books it had covered how tropical fish can cause necrotizing fascittis. My dad had been cleaning his fish tank with a wound on his arm. I sent him to the emerg, the Doctor totally agreed and put him on strong anti-biotics. I was 20 years old and earnt so much of dad respect that day. I still absorb textbooks like most people do magazines.

With that anywhere you travel you accept the health policies and procedures of the government in which you are travelling to. If you feel confident and stable in the country you are in and have secure resources there, it is most advisable to stay. Wait.

@@Xainfinen research the country you are going to, find the travel board advisory, collect some maps for that area, know a lot of places to get medical attention from any place you are planning on staying, eating or participating in boarding. Plan an itnerary, and keep your relatives aware of your location as often as possible. Research any poisonous local vegetation and animals to identify. Pack a first aid kit based on that. Research your airline and make sure nothing you pack is restricted. Try to pack any regular remedies like over the counter medications for usual stomach agitation from local cuisine, diarrhea, etc, those medications may have different potency in other countries and your body may not agree with it. Keep this in your carry on, ensure they are legal where you are going. Make sure your immunizations are up to date and especially so for the country you plan to go to, some require additional ones. Account for added time because getting this immunization may not be as easy as a tetanus booster, if it is not a common required immunization. Basically do a good deal of research, plan based on your research and give yourself lots of time. Be dilligent. Be prepared. I have travelled alone, across my own country. That was much different circumstances. I hope this helps. But the first thing I always do in any place I go to is find the tourism advisors. There may be an online one for you, it may have lots of these tips.

My boyfriend caught this. He works in a warehouse and he had type 2 diabetes. Despite having diabetic neuropathy to an extent, he called me to come to his work and take a look at his foot because he could barely put pressure on it. He though he may have fratures in his foot. When I took a look, he couldn't feel me barely touching the bottom of his foot, but it hurt like crazy to touch above his toes. There was one tiny spot, and a little bit of redress above his middle toe. I took him to the local hospital and they took an xray and said it was a fracture, and sent him home. Something wasn't sitting well with me, and after an hour or so I told him to get up, we're getting another opinion. We went to the hospital in town that had the vascular clinic and the teaching hospital. I pointed out what I saw to the doctor, and he knew exactly what was happening. It was in very early stages, but his diabetes put him in the ICU for 2 weeks. He would get IV vancomycin and an IV of broad-spectrum antibiotics four times daily. Even on Dilaudid he could barely move his foot. Eventually they had to go in and cut it all out. He didn't lose any appendages but he's got a hell of a scar to show for it.

You're pretty much a goner if it reaches your vital organs or an area that can't be surgically amputated or at least have all the infected flesh cut away

it is relatively common here. I personally know two people that had it. It was about a five year hell with special a/bs to help fight it. we are not sure what the disease vectors are yet, but mosquitoes are being looked at. after about twenty years we are not really much closer to solving it, although there has beenagain later in life some progress and my two friends don't have it any more. we hope it isn't hiding away waiting to be triggered by something again in the future. They know where it is here but not why. Im in southern australia.

This may sound weird, if I ever hit the lottery I would offer someone like Dr Chiu an obnoxious amount of money to sit down with me, hear my health history, do whatever tests need to be done and help me understand the ridiculous issues I have dealt with all my life with different infections. It’s been so bad I’ve had fistulas form between different areas from infections that wouldn’t stop. The really weird part is that the issues with “infections” almost seem like ny body somehow creates them. When I have an injury, exposure, etc, I have no issue. I would walk through sewage barefoot, and be fine. With all the issues I’ve had, I’ve developed lymphedema that allowed a leg ulcer to develop. This wound, about the size of a lemon, has been here and open literally since 2013. Rarely do doctors believe me when I tell them what all I’ve gone through. It’s only the fact that there are medical records that provide the proof I’m not crazy or just making stuff up. The fact that I battled recurring and chronic infections all of my life that seem to come from within is crazy enough. But the fact I have a gaping wound on my leg that’s been here for a decade and I still have my leg is just crazy! I dont know another way to describe it!

I had a pimple on my sack that turned into this. just a pimple nothing crazy it started to get sore then about 6 hours the swelling and pain was insane. i went to hospital and within a few min of the ultrasound the doctor said we need to cut it out asap within 20min i was under the knife. woke up all parts there but they had to keep the wound open to make sure it healed. i went back under again for them to clean out more infection. then about a week of antiboitics and being in a hospital bed then one more time under the knife for stiches. this stuff is no joke if i had not of gone into hospital i would have lost parts or died. yes it was embarrassing but better off than being dead.

My father had this. One night he bumped his leg on the bed leg and broke the skin. Three days later we went to see his doctor who was in his late years. The Doc dialed 911 and said X hospital X decease and X specialist. By some random stroke of luck said specialist was his wife. With the correct antibiotics he survived without amputation. He did get a skin graft to speed up the healing process.
