A lot of people seem to not realize that if the missile’s speed/energy has been mostly bled, and you’re already notching, you should be able to just turn and burn, run away and re engage when you’ve gotten enough distance. What I do usually is crank left/right 90 degrees, then dive, and turn 180 from the missile, and burn. Obviously you should be doing evasive maneuvers as well, but as long as you keep your speed above Mach 1, you should be fine. This tactic is so efficient I tend to use it in even DCS

Pre-chaffing is a great tip and one I use all the time. Im not sure if 90 degree chaffing works on non PD radars but you don't need the chaff for PD radars even at higher alts (People don't switch radar modes to regular search and track high alts for some reason). After doing some research I learned why Sparrows ignore chaff after launch, apparently the missile has rearpointing waveguides that compare the initial radar illumination to all other radar reflections to avoid chaff. Great video overall !!!
@SeekerHead2 жыл бұрын
it’s not bugged, working as intended. Sparrows and R24s are smart enough to tell there’s chaff via CW Illumination, unless it’s a 90 degree chaff.
@Boris_The_Turtle2 жыл бұрын
@@SeekerHead Yeah I just edited because I learnt why the sparrows and R24 do that. I personally don't reccomend 90-degree chaffing, I prefer diving while being 90 degrees; the reason is so you can tell how well you are notching by seeing if the radar lost lock on RWR.

@@SeekerHead Can R-24Ts filter out some of the heat sources that are shoved into its line of sight and continue tracking whatever target it was originally locked onto? Because that’s what happens to me, and it feels like doesn’t matter what throttle I’m at, the missile just continues tracking me. I’ve been facing the MLD with other aircraft of the 23 family that have the large-caliber countermeasures, and going off the afterburner, positioning the flare dispenser towards the missile, and flaring a little then maneuvering away from the flares does nothing to stop the 24T. Every other missile in the game will fall for that if it’s not radar, and if those guys were using 24Rs, then my RWR would pick them up when they lock me from straight ahead. It feels like utter bs, and I was wondering if you know how to defeat the 24T effectively, so you can teach me. Thanks.

The running away tactic could possibly be expanded to idk "doppler speed gating" the missile. So going side on towards the missile, with sufficient background clutter, also might defeat the missile. I believe most fox 1 except R-24R and AIM-7F have about a 150 m/s margin for error and the 24R and 7F a 125 m/s one. Going cold is one way to blend in with the background clutter, but technically going side on will also work. Also no mention of pulse signal fox 1 missiles? Aforementioned tactic of going sideways or cold don't work against them, although I suppose it's not as important as they are all 1) pretty weak, strongest one is the R.530 2) are on planes with bad radars, so getting locked in the first place isn't too common 3) they are susceptible to chaff, so using them as flares works (they function identically really like the aircraft's on board pulse mode radar when it comes to how it reacts to chaff).
@collander77662 жыл бұрын
yeah the pulse ones are nice because you cant notch them, but they also instantly track chaff. They always directly follow the location of your green radar lock square, not any moving target within a vicinity of it (like sparrows). Also none of them pull more than like 15 Gs tho

the most consistent defense I use is simply turn right or left and fly perpendicular to the enemies heading. this works every time if you are sure they are in pd mode (pretty much guaranteed if its a low altitude encounter). no chaff needed. The enemies radar will simply lose you bc the closing speed becomes too close to his air speed so the radar thinks you are part ground clutter it is designed to ignore and ignores you. The chaff is only needed if the enemy is using the classic search mode.

We got very early PD capable radars in game still. A lot of improvement happend during those decades. However, it's true tho that Gaijin probably has overnerfed PD radars in the game, especially when it comes to the rear aspect. There are bug reports about it. But it's probably not going to chance in a while because Gaijin once again has screwed up by giving only half of all nations PD + (good) fox 1 capable aircraft so far. It's one of those artifical nerfs for balance we have to live with for a little while until it becomes widely available to all nations in the game.

Just because its from "The F-16" doesn't mean its the radar from the C model block 50 F-16 lmao, that radar IS extremely advanced, but that's not the one we have in game. And yes, the EJ Kai's only retired in 2020, but they first of all barely did or were intended (in the last 20 years) for anything air to air, and were mainly if anything for reconnaissance or ground attack, it being retired so recently has nothing to do with its radar, which likely got updated again anyway.

Maybe this is not the most efficient tactic as it does use kind of a lot of countermeasures but it is definetely the safest as long as it's performed well (almost a 100% success rate, at least with the currently in game missiles, but this tactic even works for advanced Fox-3s wich, except the AIM-54A, are currently not in game). It's also very easy When the missile is about 6-4 kms away (sometimes even more distance works), you start notching AND diving (about 10 - 25°, be careful to not dive too much especially if the missile is from above). After that you create a little countermeasure wall (like one key press per second for about 3/4 seconds) and start going cold (so away from the enemy aircraft) while still diving (a little less) The chances of you getting hit using this method are basically NONE as you combine basically every defensive maneuver existing: 1) Diving: As you lower your altitude, air gets thicker, wich means more drag, wich means the missile decelerates faster. To that you have to add that if the radar is not Pulse Doppler, it's going to start a little ground-clutter issue, wich gets bigger as altitude decreases. 2) Notching: As explained in the video, due to how PD and MTI radars work, notching makes it really difficult for the radar itself to keep tracking you, and so is hard for the missile to guide on you. 3) Creating a Chaff wall while Notching: This basically enhances the point explained above. 4) Going cold: As you start going away from the enemy, for them 2 problems appear: 1. The cold side is usually the side with the smallest cross-section on the entire plane, as a matter of fact making you look smaller to the enemy's radar, wich of course makes the lock harder 2. By going cold, as you reduce the closure rate with the enemy (and so their missiles too), the missile has to percur a greater distance, wich bleeds the missile's speed (and as a fact this is the best defensive "maneuver" for the various F-104s due to it's high speeds and acceleration). 5) Turning: As you turn, the missile has to turn too to adjust the lead (wich means that changing the flight path many times makes the missile turn a lot), and so the missile gets slower. And if you turn enough you bring the missile to the max G-load, wich means that if you turn enough WHEN it's close enough, the missile might miss you just because of the inability to turn more. If it still isn't enough the missile is probably so slow you can dodge it by a little turn upwards followed by a little barrel roll downwards, as it's probably so slow that the closure rate is really really small.

Will definitely be testing these out, thanks for the info! Just recently started playing around top tier and have been struggling with this aspect especially. On the topic of chaff being "broken" though, I am curious - *should* the chaff be able to break a sarh missile's lock after being launched? Like, is the current behaviour true to the real world or not? Whether it's then a bug or an intentional design choice by the devs is another matter~
@SeekerHead2 жыл бұрын
Chaff instantly kills the basic fox 1 missiles like the French M530 or whatever it’s called. It’s the missiles that use CW illumination that can continue tracking while chaff is being deployed (most top tier SARHs). This is somewhat realistic. The most unrealistic part about it all is that the radars physically lock into chaff, making it appear as though theoretically the missile should now track the chaff, as that is what the radar has locked. This doesn’t happen irl though, and i believe it to be gaijins way of simpifying chaff

The reason why you can't get a missile to track cold is because you are moving roughly the same speed as the target which the radar tries to differentiate. If you were moving slower or faster you could probably get a better lock.

It's alright except for the fact that the radar somehow illuminates the entirety of planet earth even in lock mode... this leads to both good and bad stuff in game, like an aircraft running away very far angle wise from the locked chaff still being hit by the missile or the missile going off to a friendly that's nowhere near close to the intended target (angle wise). I've shot missiles towards my locked target but the missile going for a friendly (going at a high closure rate) towards me, underneath me. One would think my radar wouldn't even reach my friendly's aircraft but it did anyway. With a lock you expect a fairly narrow region of illumated space, it gets wider and wider over distance of course, but it shouldn't be that bad (I doubt Gaijin has modelled light refraction in atmospheric layers, but even then...). I've had a decent amount of unwanted teamkills ever since they nerfed fox 1s (which made them switch targets more easily).

I follow these two methods and works decently well for me: 1. When you see a MiG23 in your vicinity, pre-flare! flare every 1.5 - 2 seconds as this is how long it will take for the seeker to get a lock on you again (assuming it locked the flare first) 2. When the R24T is coming head-on: If a R24T is on its way to hitting J on your keyboard for you, kill your afterburner and do the same maneuver in this video while flaring but pull harder. However, when you pull in the opposite direction after the first pull, flare and pull as hard as you can immediately after (but keep an eye on your speed, go too slow and even the lord won't be able to help you). Hopefully, this helps, and do let me know how it goes. I am Syn7ax in-game. Let me know here or in-game :)

@@kalumbailey5103 From my understanding, it's basically entirely the missile. The point of this maneuver is to make the missile lose energy so it doesn't have the speed to turn into you and hit you. The 7F has a much longer time on it's motor compared to the E-2s or Skyflash which means it can keep its energy in situations where the E-2 would lose it all, so you have to make it bleed more energy when it turns back into you when you switch directions. It's kind of like when you're playing tag(I know right, not playing WT), and someone is chasing you, and if you serpentine it'll make it significantly harder for them to tag you because they keep having to lead you as you change directions. For AIM-9D/Gs you can do the same pull in one direction and reverse the turn into the other direction technique as they lead a lot as is their way of preserving energy (and range). If you're slow, you die, especially if the missile is an R60 or a Magic. If you are >800kph, then basically do the E-2 sparrow dodge except quicker. If you're like more than 1.5km from the missile, then start slightly turning one direction(at least roll in that direction) if you're expecting a fox-2, then turn harder in that direction when it's fired, then when it's around 0.7km away turn hard-ish the other direction. This'll slow you down though depending on how fast you are going(If you're over mach you don't have to turn nearly as hard), so if you're going 900 most likely you'll die shortly after dodging one missile. It is quite nice though, when I'm in my Draken and there's 4 Mig-23s behind me and I dodge their R-60s while they get picked off by phantoms.

This may be kinda niche, but how does the AIM-9C on the F8E compare to the Sparrows in terms of rear-aspect tracking and tracking targets with chaff? The WT Wiki makes it sound like it requires a constant radar lock feedback from the aircraft to maneuver, so where a Sparrow still tracks if the enemy chaffs after launch, the 9C might not? I'm working on getting my F8E now, but knowing what to expect would be helpful.
@NickThePilotUSA2 жыл бұрын
Chaff works on the 9C.
@GeneralLee20002 жыл бұрын
Like nick said, chaff will always work on the 9C. The missile, like other navy missiles like the 9D/9G, has a tendency to overshoot and pull in at the last second, so expect a lot of near misses. As long as you go into it with that in mind, it's a pretty fun missile to use, kinda gives you digfight radar missiles as 10.3. They work very well in headons at around 6 km from my experience as well.
@Wotplaya42 жыл бұрын
that's because AIM-9C filters the return signals differently from Sparrows. The 9C (or other pulse signal missiles) uses distance to determine its target, unlike Sparrows (or other CW signal missiles) which use closure rate. Chaff deploys at the same distance as the orignal target, of course your on board radar of your aircraft will switch to chaff as it's uses radar pulses as well (that's how it gets distance info, unlike when you're in PD mode). The 9C will also just like your on board radar switch targets, but a Sparrow would continue to track the aircraft as long as it has sufficient closure rate (error+background clutter closure rate), because chaff is slow and gets filtered out by the missile.

Second, many people easily evade incoming rb71 even without shown manuevers. And third, rb71 sometimes start to track flares! It's so stupid ffs. Btw, does shown manuevers work vs r23/24r? Thanks.

i just wanna say chaffing in a head on agaisnt PD mode is pretty much useless doesnt matter alt, only way to not get hit by a pd mode radar in a head on is to do a manuver
@SeekerHead2 жыл бұрын
Chaffing in a head on is useless in general. Especially so in pulse doppler however, because pulse doppler radars don’t even see chaff. If you’re going to use chaff, it has to be in a 90 degree aspect, in which you’d be notching a PD anyway.

Was that test with firing multiple fox 1s using a modded game or can the F4J actually guide missiles like that in game?
@Red_Lion20002 жыл бұрын
You can launch several fox1's in quick succesion and have them track the target.
@larcrivereagle55592 жыл бұрын
@@Red_Lion2000 huh. I thought the F4J's radar was incapable of that.
@Wotplaya42 жыл бұрын
@@larcrivereagle5559 you're probably confused with locking multiple targets instead, the F-4J can only lock one target at a time but can guide unlimited sparrows really towards that one target, there's no reason it can't. It was even done irl to maximize chances of hitting a target. Any aircraft can do that in game actually, but again only 1 individual target at a time.

@@Wotplaya4 Damn. I've been playing handicapped this entire time.
@SeekerHead2 жыл бұрын
@@larcrivereagle5559 Not necessarily, firing more than one at a target isn’t recommended imo. You’ll have more potential for damage if you learn how to maximize the lethality of a single sparrow that way you don’t dump all of your kill potential on a single, often unimportant target.

can u make a video about Gun targeting distance and Vertical targeting , some times i see u use vertical targeting and sometimes u do not , it will be helpful to explain , thank you
@SeekerHead2 жыл бұрын
gun targeting distance is just the convergence, it only really applies to wing mounted guns, since you won’t really notice convergence on center mounted guns. Verticals targeting will do the same thing as the normal targeting distance, just up and down rather than the standard left/right convergence. I generally just always use verticals targeting so that it’s consistent and I don’t have to readjust all the time. I find verticals targeting helpful on aircraft like the MiG15, as it has its guns mounted underneath the fuselage, like many others. I use verticals targeting on everything, but it really only matters that much on aircraft with top or bottom mounted guns. it’s down to personal preference

How do I get my F4E radar to give me stronger locks like you get in your videos? No matter what situation I'm in unless it is high altitude and clear blue sky, and even then sometimes it doesnt work, my lock isn't strong enough for a sparrow.
@Wotplaya42 жыл бұрын
Wdym strong locks? Any lock in the end will suffice but the sparrow's seeker itself might be the one that's having trouble. F-4Es radar (not the EJ kai at least) have pulse mode only, so they are susceptible to ground clutter. Nonetheless they can get a lock if the enemy is close enough to you. Your radar filters on distance. Then there's your sparrow which filters returns signals based on doppler shift. So even if you got a lock on them, the missile can not get a lock itself if the target is moving at too low of a closure rate. It's a little inconsistent at altitude sometimes but that might be due to clouds. So basically: they only work reliably in a headon. Side and rear aspect often have too low of a closure rate for the sparrow to lock.

Bit of a question on using kinematics to evade the missile head-on, is the "Mach 1+" rule universal or can the more maneuverable aircraft dodge them while doing, say, Mach 0.8 at around sea level?
@SeekerHead2 жыл бұрын
Universal
@Wotplaya42 жыл бұрын
Speed is needed to make the missile lead more. If you aren't that fast, the missile doesn't lead as much, making it easier for the missile to pull back into you once you reverse your turn. A little more maneuverability isn't going to help as much, unless you can actually outpull the missile completely, but I doubt pulling 25+ Gs is recommended.
@loopoval20662 жыл бұрын
@@SeekerHeadI see, thank you! @CalvinAz Yeah, I just figured that Sparrows might have a harder time hitting with even a little bit of extra deg/s of pull with the much higher closure rate. But I haven't played in a while and Seeker is a much better top tier pilot than I ever was anyway, so I wanted to confirm. Thanks for the responses!
@hemendraravi47872 жыл бұрын
U can dodge it at mach 0.8 but u need altitude atleast 800m , u can dodge the missile at lower speeds but u just need to make a bit more wider circle and u have to kinda roll down if ur already slow ,so if u don’t have altitude to spare and do a vertical roll then u will end up as a slow and easy target (as u were at mach 0.8 to being with) rolling down won’t let u bleed as much speed as when u roll up
