You guys don't get it, this not about Somalia, this is about making a narrative, Somalis are present here, listent to the guy at 53:40 who tells them about Somalia but that's not what they want to hear. The narrative they want to sent is Somalis support Al-shabaab and therefore US military presence is needed, that lady Dr. Felbab-Brown is an expert who goes around the world documenting illicit criminal activities and underground markets and she has not said one single word about Al shabaab finances but she's able to remember a woman who told her Al-shabaab is good, Pakistan supports the Taliban, Saudis support ISIS and they're saying Somali people support Al shabaab, that's why at 59:00 he signals to that Jareer to bring the charcoals stats, the NSA is able to track untraceable Bitcoins so if they wanted to help Somalia they could seize every penny Al shabaab has and that organisation would collapse but that's not what they want. The people do not support Al shabaab they know it's a terrorist organisation funded by Gulf states that uses violence and food to keep its power and the US is aware of that like they are aware the Saudis are involved in Yemen but US interest comes before Somalis interest.

Am I the only one who think the African guy added NOTHING to the conversation. I think the people who were organising this panel thought "Let's just add black guy into mix so no one would say white people discussing about african country". The ambassador (which is more interested in US interest in Somalia than Somalia it self) and the lady have more complex view on Somalia, although I personally liked the points in which the Lady put forward and I want to answer her question. The reason that clan discrimination largely isn't found in Alshabab is because the biggest identification and the most important identity marker in Alshabab is muslim identity. I must quickly add that I am very much against Alshabab brutality, but there are somethings that we can learn about them. In my humble opinion Somalia problems can not be solved unless we incorporate our Islamic values in to our goverment, only then we can get rid of corruption and clan discrimination.

Raqiya Ahmed Jibriil Well said Darood Power. Jajaja!
@malehfarah21646 жыл бұрын
Raqiya, I think you got it wrong, the reason the Al shabaab terrorists are not fighting over clan issues is because they are getting paid and getting sex slaves. Clan squabbles are usually over resources and these terrorists get huge resources from Gulf countries. Terrorist organisations don't run on "faith" only they also run on money and as long as they have money they will keep terrorizing people and sadly this conference never addressed that issue. As for incorporating "Islamic" values in the government to solve Somalia's problems I totally disagree. Look how fucked up the Middle East is, all those countries fighting have 'Islamic" values and it has not stopped them from killing each other. Believing that without Islam we cannot govern ourselves properly is totally rubbish, this is like saying we were savages before islam came to our shores, many Somali fanatics call that the jahiliyya period as if we were slaughtering ourselves back then like they do in the Middle East, in fact it's the opposite, we were more peaceful and prosperous back then before islam got us all twisted and clannish with Arab genealogy. Saying that we need Islamic values is like saying we need Western values, both of them are not our values, they are the values of foreigners. What we need is our own values, we're people with a very old history who live in the place they found Dinkinesh, we cannot just erase our history and believe instead in some plagiarized religious stories with talking animals and flying unicorns. We need to reclaim our history and our heritage otherwise we're no different than slaves who have been given their masters history and heritage.
@raqiyaahmedjibriil36476 жыл бұрын
Maleh Farah, I am disappointed to hear that you think Islam is arab religion . It is true that prophet Muhammad (c.s) was Arab man but Islam was very revolutionary religion that came to challenge the tribalism and the horrible in justice that Arabs and non Arabs were in it. It is a way of life not culture. Islam is religion for all human being. If you know anything about Islam you would have known that what is happening in the middle east has very little to do with Islam it self. What is happening today in the middle East is caused by (to but it simply) Iraq invasion and powerful countries using the middle East to fight proxy wars. As for the western values, I don't think they are invaluable and I think we can learn so many good things from them. Somali culture has many good things and I think we need to preserve that, but it also has bad things and we need to get rid of it. I am not a person who just get rids of culture or religion because I think it's not mine, I like to evaluate it by it's merits. For me whatever Wisdom given to humanity is mine because I am a human being. Although I am a born Muslim but I chose Islam because of it's merits. Thank you.
@malehfarah21646 жыл бұрын
Raqiya, what "horrible" injustices were the Somali people in that Islam liberated us from? If you have proof that in the 7th century we were under an horrible oppression and some Arab saviors come to liberate us, please post your links so that we can go read them because from historical records the Arabs came to trade with us and then later on they brought their religion but they never came to liberate us. Even when the Arabs invaded Egypt where they could have liberated some of our Cushite cousins from Roman Byzantine occupation all they did was become the new colonizers and loot the place dry. I know you believe in their made up stories they plagiarized from the Jews and the Christians but to believe they freed us from some horrible plight is exactly the mindset of slaves who believe they were freed from some horrible plight when they were enslaved. As for the Middle East conflicts, yes Western powers are involved but these powers exploit preexisting animus and the Sunnis Shiites hate existed before these Western power got there. Islam had it's time and it's high times we start moving on to rebuild our identity back otherwise it will be too late as you gals turn very hairy under those sheets and we'll have no choice but to ship y'all to south east asia.
@raqiyaahmedjibriil36476 жыл бұрын
Maleh Farah, it very discouraging to hear you say such intolerant things like how you will "ship" me to south "South east asia", and because I am a female how you describe me as "hairy" " under those sheets". The truth is I like having dialogue with people who have different views than me but I don't tolerate and will not tolerate any disrespectful comments. Now to answer your question I never said that "arabs liberated us" and if you look back at my previous answer you will see that. I am very aware of how Islam came to my land and my people and they like many other muslims living or dead choose this religion because of it's values. As for Sunni and Shia conflict, if you read it up you Will see that they have been living together in peace for many centuries. You can of course build your own identity if you wish but for many of us we already have identity which we are very proud of. The thing is am not that intrested in blood lines, I think that is why we killed each other and we still kill each other because we imagine that some people are "closer" to us than others. I have no interest in tribalism. I think you should learn Islam from its scholars so you at least understand it is core values. I think it's important to support your self with correct information in this age of "alternative facts" So here is a website that belongs to amazing institution that could answer some of your questions about Islam. yaqeeninstitute.org/en/research/publications/ P.S you will appreciate if you read the Qur'an in English translation if you don't know arabic. It is a very intresting book.

Whom Can We Trust If No One Is Trustworthy? One of my favorite quips from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is when Tom is defined as “a glittering hero…the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” and there were “some that believed that he would be President, yet, if he escaped hanging.” With these few words, Twain captured the essence of leadership in our world. Those who get to the top are the fiercest, most determined, and most ruthless. Today, the latter quality has become so intense that we can no longer believe our leaders, and certainly not trust them to have our best interest in mind. I am not accusing any leader in particular, or even leaders as a whole. It is simply that in an egoistic world, where people vie to topple one another on their way to the top, the one at the top is clearly the one who trampled over and knocked down more people than anyone else. Concisely, to get to the top in an egoistic world you have to be the biggest egoist. So how do we know whom to trust? We don’t know and we cannot know. All we know is that we are in the dark. In a culture of unhinged selfishness, any conspiracy theory seems reasonable, while truth is nowhere to be found. When every person who says or writes something is trying to promote some hidden agenda, you have no way of knowing who is right, what really happened, or if anything happened at all. The only way to get some clarity in the news and goodwill from our leaders is to say “Enough!” to our current system and build something entirely independent. The guiding principle of such a system should be “information only,” no commentary. Commentary means that information has already been skewed. Information means saying only what happened, as much as possible, not why, and not who is to blame and who we should praise. Concurrently, we must begin a comprehensive process of self-teaching. We have to know not only what is happening, but why we skew and distort everything. In other words, we have to know about human nature and how it inherently presents matters according to its own subjective view, which caters to one’s own interest. To “clear” ourselves from that deformity, we must learn how to rise above our personal interest and develop an equally favorable attitude toward others. This is our only guarantee that our interpretation of things will be even and correct. Once we achieve such an attitude, we will discover that the bad things we see in our world reflect our own, internal wickedness. Our ill-will toward others creates a world where ill-will governs, and so the world is filled with wickedness and cruelty. Therefore, all we need in order to create positive leadership-and to generally eliminate ill-will from the world-is to generate goodwill within us. When we nurture goodwill toward others, we will fill the world with goodwill. As a result, the world will fill with kindness and compassion. By changing ourselves, we will create a world that is opposite from the world we have created through our desires to govern, patronize, and often destroy other people...

If only Somalia listens to Somaliland we told you keep all foreigners away from your internal political affairs, starting from 1991 at least 14 conferences were held for Somalia all of them where outside of Somalia in the hands of foreigners.
This is the reality of our country that we are all remaining deaf and blind about. Every one says the solution to Somalia’s problems lies with the Somalis. But no one is leaving Somali people to solve their problems. There is interference from every where.

I believe that if the International Communities keep their nose out of it then, the Somalians will find their own solution. The Somalians need to go back to basics, which means going back to the old Somalian tradition negotiation instead of someone else are dictating them for how to run a government.

the notion of a unified Somali state that encompasses all Somalis, regardless of their clan or where they live, is, in itself an idea that was imported from Europe and has no intellectual roots, as far as I am aware, in Somali history. Somalis have always been separated into small groups mainly on the grounds of clan allegiances. So I really don't know what you mean when you say going back to "old school"

I appreciate for Brookings Institute for organizing this session. The reality is far from what some panel members talked about. That is not the Somalia I worked in for five years. Some panel members have visited by going to a small isolated island built by the so called international community. Basing your judgement on what you heard from those people in the Island is not who Somalis are and the country in general. They are challenges and as well progresses towards good governance and peaceful Somalia! Diversify your panel next time!

Sit back and picture what you are watching, these are not somalis and they sit there saying we will try to get solutions for Somalia without having one single somali person. It is just propaganda and that is how they make money to run their institution. Your mentality is exactly how African leaders behave by seeking African problems from European leaders. When African leaders is called in Europe to discuss African problems. And you happy that someone else find a solution for your problem? Have a respect for yourself and seek somali problems from inside not outside.
