‘Don’t do it’: Somali president warns Ethiopia over Somaliland port deal

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 1, Somaliland leased landlocked Ethiopia 20km (12 miles) of its coastland around the port of Berbera, on the Gulf of Aden, for 50 years for military and commercial purposes.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Mohamud said Ethiopian assets would have to cross into Somalia’s territory in order to reach the leased area and warned Addis Ababa against taking such a step.
“So far Ethiopians haven’t come into Somalia. If they will, then that will be a problem at a different level,” Mohamud said.

That's easy to understand. Ethiopia desperately needs sea access if they are to escape from an agricultural economy and develop into a manufacturing economy. Right now, Djibouti extorts them for 10% of their whole GDP just for port access. This is stunting their growth. They would like port access that is more reasonably priced. Somaliland is desperate for recognition, so the price they would charge for port access would be much lower. If Ethiopia deals directly with Somalia, they will be dealing with a fragile and dysfunctional state that has the ability to charge more for a worse service. They could charge even more than Djibouti, but now Ethiopia has to pay far more in insurance because of all the instability from clan wars and pirates. Ethiopia gains nothing from dealing directly with Somalia, but they gain everything from dealing with Somaliland, which is stable, peaceful, and comes at a manageable price.

The only reason why Somalia is opposing the deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland is because of the “recognition” Somalia already leases parts of its land to countries like Turkey and they already have Ethiopian troops inside Somalia. So here’s the real issue, Somalia understands the case of Somaliland is a complex case and if this case to goes to int court they would most likely lose in legal battle, so instead they opted for a dangerous strategy which is to isolate and exhaust Somaliland to the point of them giving up their hopes of becoming independent country. The problem with this type of strategy is at any time, another country might see their interest in Somaliland and negotiate a deal with them for an exchange of Recognition ( which is what’s happening now ) and unfortunately for Somalia there’s nothing they can do apart from make noise and beg for help!
