I'm just curious - what is your routine for filming on a road trip? Do you come across a great bit of scenery and decide "that would look good" - so you drive back a little bit, fit the GoPros accordingly and then drive along filming and doing a piece to camera - or what? How do you structure your filming differently during a trip as opposed to at a specific location or event? Just wondering... Maybe you could even do a Drive The World episode on the way to film?

If you want to "drive" on the Great Ocean Rd you need to start at the crack of dawn. Before all the tour buses etc get out on the road. I've done the MX5 club run a few times and we always start off around 5am. #goodtimes

The place with the birds is Kennet River at the Koala Cafe, you buy seed from there for 2 bucks and feed wild king parrots.... and the owner has pet wild Kookaburras that he hand fees raw staek too,,, ONE OFF THE BEST PLACES TO STOP ON THE DRIVE AND IS SOMEWHAT UNKNOWN EXCEPT VIA TOUR GUIDES.

The other major collapse was at the west end was London (was known as Bridge) Arch. I remember walking along it...

Shame you stopped in Lorne and Apollo Bay (you're right, most certainly worth a miss)- you missed a great little spot called Wye River. Awesome pub there with an insane view. Hope you didn't crack a rim with the state of the Great Ocean Rd too! Wish I'd known you were down here, I would have pulled the M3 out for a spin and shown you some quiet twisty roads out the back!

The GOR is a good drive, but during summer holidays traffic chaos ensures. It is much more enjoyable mid week when everyone is at work :) BTW, if you need to clean your car when in Australia, get yourself some all Australian made products called 'Bowdens Own'. You will love it.

You're right about it not being a great driving road any more. Heavily policed, low speed limits and some appalling drivers, particularly in minivans full of tourists who do the trip from Melbourne, get to the 12 apostles, wave selfie sticks around like weapons and then race back to Melbourne in time for dinner. But in the past, there have been rally sections on the road and it's been driven competitively, much like a Targa stage. Imagine trying to do that now! The outcry from tourists would be deafening, although the locals would still love it. Worth mentioning too that the road was built as a project by the government to employ soldiers that had returned from WWI and needed jobs. What a pity that so many people don't get past the 12 apostles. There's the wonderful Loch Ard gorge, where the ship Loch Ard foundered and only a girl and a cabin boy survived, along with a huge peacock statue now on display at the Maritime Museum at Warrnambool. Hope you get/got there too.

Sam Australia will always be a raw experience of nature that's what makes it great, now your on my roads, I have had many epic drives down there....day and night.....the road after Apollo Bay gets better from a driver's perspective.... and you should never go in high season like you are doing... better to be midweek.... you won't find any 5 star dinning down this way, accept one place... but that's typical outside of major cities.
