Diablo 2 : Runewords That Devastated Balance

Runewords are probably the strongest and most balance breaking factor in Diablo 2. Since Diablo 2:Resurrected is soon to be upon us, I thought I'd run down some of the most well known, iconic, or generally 'Enigma-esque' Runewords you can create in D2!

How weird, that the developers of the game have been releasing the last update (version 0.8.2i) in June 2021 and are - as of August 2021 - releasing various previews of features, that will be coming in the next patch 0.8.3. Yesterday, they even released a gameplay trailer for that update (the update is called the "Sands of Majasa Update"). But yes, development has been terminated, of course (sarcasm). Please don't spread bullshit misinformation, that is disgustingly easy debunked. It makes you look really, really, REALLY fucking dumb. Jesus Christ.

Spirit Runeword is worth mentioning. Still super easy to get both shield and sword (shield requires a 4s monarch for non-pallies which has high strength requirements, but thats fine). These weapons are achieveable early NM and can carry you through the entire game.

that's some good editing especially since you only got 4k subscribers. Some runewords worth mentioning... spirit sword+shield. Also insight polearm for merc. Maybe even the fire staff for sorc, I forgot the name. Runewords in 1.10 were the reason why we should've had a 2nd hell difficulty.

Spirit is also broken when you get it in normal as a spellcaster. It is a hell viable item... and eliminates most items from ever being even considered. And it's cheap as dirt!

@@rng_stuff D2 was not an easy game, but there was always a way get better gear, you had to grind and a lot, I had every freaking char at max level my self, and everyone of them was usable for its own thing, some I ran pindleskin on, others Baal, some I ran arround killing everything that came to me, did I die a lot yes I died, did I find parts that I was not able to do at times, yes I did, but I never got stuck, I always found a way to get through, also if my char was to bad for hell, I grinded nightmare until I got better items, or just even first and second act until I got better gear, there was and is always a way, I didnt have the best runewords eighter, didnt even need them

You forgot to mention Insight and Spirit. Take the most basic runes, turn them into easy skillpoints at the cost of a few specific basic socketed items, and have full hit recovery with a single item and infinite mana while giving your mercenary a weapon that can actually kill things in Hell. No shield in this game other than Necromancer and Paladin specific items compare to the usefulness and price of a cheap Spirit. Also most Paladins and Necro casters use Spirit too...

Yeah absolutely lol. Spirit is another one of those items that is just way too much. I can't believe it slipped my mind. And Insight is actually something I've never used surprisingly. I'm always in this weird spot where I don't want to farm for runes in normal, or I just find something good my merc can attack with.

I hate it that runewords like that make you not even want to pick up other nice rares and uniques cus they are all worse than spirit.. 1.09 was so much better in terms of item balance. 1.09 with harder exp gain would be best version.

Love the vid. I tend to not think of the Enigma as "Overpowered" I tend to think of it as an "EndGame Reward". (though it is OP, I tend to avoid mods that nerf it. I play SinglePlayer HC, so I never have to worry about bots making it "Too Easy" to find).

Yeah I completely missed the mark on spirit. I think I'm so used to making/using spirit that I just disregarded it. But it could actually be the most op one in the entire game since it's so cheap and so good.

Spirit is OP in theory but not in practice. You can't make one until you find a 4-socket sword (in Nightmare) or a 4-socket shield (in Hell). So you're already well beyond Normal and you're already equipping other items which came from Nightmare and Hell. Although - with Larzuk's help - a pally could Spirit an Auric shield or a barb could Spirit a 2H sword in Normal. The pally could get a low level-req shield with awesome +resists. The barb could get a +skill (+fcr, +mana) swap weapon better than anything else available before around L85+.

Stealth breastplates are all I make for characters once I hit act two on one of them. Shop for 2 socket breastplate and be set until you find something better in nightmare. Sometimes I don't even make one in act one knowing act two is close around the corner. I use to just put them in leather armor, but I find the strength of breastplates not too hard to reach on any character. Light armor still.

I made a Stealth in a Great Hauberk on my Druid. Already had 156 str for the Spirit Monarch so I figured why not get the extra defense right? The runes are easy to come by and until I make myself a Smoke for the resists or I finally get an Enigma, Stealth works for me!

The cool thing about runes is while they can make your character op af and pretty much break the game, the charm is the uphill battle of acquiring them. That OP character build feels earned, as opposed to D3 where elite gear rains down from the sky, or you can outright purchase it.

Tir Ral. With the right staff can easily walk a fire spec sorc through the majority of normal and nightmare. All from 1 run of normal Countess (highest is the Ral). When I did ladder and played Meteor Orb sorc, it was easily one of the best things in the game until I got the level to wear out my endgame gear. Another criminally underappreciated is the Insight polearm. Sure it ain't the best thing around, but in early days when mana is a little tight for even a sorc, Insight fixes that and lets you teleport everywhere.

One thing that always irks me when people say Grief is the best, is how they completely disregard hc chars. For hc, it makes sense that Last Wish is the unobtainable chase item, as it's a *far* better weapon on hc than grief is on sc. You get the exact same boss dps as grief, and only slightly worse dps elsewhere, but you get a TON of survivability on top! Grief is just a dps boost, and if you die on sc, you simply try again. LW is not only equal to grief on bosses, it will actually do a ton to keep you alive on hc. I've never had one myself outside of hero editor, but having played hc for most of my time in d2 I just think it's super underrated.

On my old account I had 2 call to arms swords and was a shout buff barb with almost no combat ability. I had some other gear that gave me +1-2 to all stats and my shouts became so powerful I could solo nightmare just fine and any rush uber runs I did I was the key person for go to bluffs while other players killed the bosses.

This is stuff that drove me crazy eventually. Could never get use-worthy stuff beyond the rank and file, or trade-worthy stuff. Why I had to quit the game before I started buying stuff online back in 2004 or so. I quit, and started playing this game City of Heroes recommended to me. Much less stress.

And still some of the best items in the game are rare items xD Rings, amulets, circlets, weapons (javs, axes), belts, boots, all of which have better rare versions... Not to mention trap claws or certain circlets which are better in magic... I agree SOME runewords are too OP, but the cost is high to make those (Last Wish ex.) Besides melee are better at most of the hardest content in game (dia clone, ubers etc.) But whatever i guess..

I think that part of Diablo 2 is truly the most addicting, where you can always find something random that fits perfectly for your character. But if you can't, you have a lot of decent choices (runewords definitely help) that will fit you fine. And yeah, melee is definitely top tier for the hardest content, but idk it's a smallish part of the game at the end of the day, so I still stick with casters for MF and just messing around.

Running with AO-NewITH's colossus blade on my pvp WW barb was great. Or my pvp smite pally with Exile zakurum shield was great too. Both with Enigma dusk shroud to teleport around.

Dusk shroud, scarab husk, cuirass, and mage plate were always my favorite to make enigma. Kraken shell/lacquered plate too because they have cool names and appearance, but too high strength req for most builds

I think everything they added to d2 had more benefits than set backs, literally everyone was a sorceress and sorceress was the only one you could mf with, when I think about d2 the enigma is the first item that comes to mind, it's just so cool.
