Seerah of Prophet Muhammad 99 - Verse of Sword & Hajj of Abu Bakr ~ Dr. Yasir Qadhi | 10th Dec 2014

In this video, Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi covers the Hajj of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, who was joined by Ali Ibn Abu Talib, in the 9th year of Hijrah. This was the only Hajj performed by both Muslims and Pagans side by side.
Shaykh Yasir also clarifies common misunderstandings of the famous "Verse of Sword" (Surat At-Tawbah, Verse 5) and provides the correct explanation of these verses in proper context and theme.
In summary:
1) Pagans (Idol worshippers) were given 4 months to travel freely and leave if they desired, or accept Islam
2) Verse 6 says if Pagans seek Muslim protection, it must be given, Islam should be explained to them and they must be taken to a safe place
3) Not one person was killed/executed as a result of these verses
4) Meant to threaten Pagans (ie, stay where you are and accept Islam or leave)
5) This message was only for Pagans (Idol worshippers) and not Jews and Christians

Dear Sheikh Yasir, Please make a class on the history of Islam after Prophet s.a.w passed away because I think it is something a lot of Muslims don't have knowledge about. Also, I have read various sources from western writers who quote Arab/Muslim historians. But of course, there is negativity surrounding many issues throughout their books because they are not Muslims and more prone to attack Islam. Furthermore, some Sheikhs that do tell about Islam history tend to hide the "bad" or negative things that happened. I think it would benefit Muslims to understand what happened throughout the history from a Western educated Sheikh like yourself, because you have the ability to look at topics in an analytical manner and help us look at the various issues that happened throughout history with a critical view.

The delay of a collective pilgrimage shows the greater importance of working on society. I don't know it there is any reference to pagans or heathens in Arabia visiting Mecca before Suwrat Attawbah, but there have been pilgrims cumming from as far as India, Tibet, and Norway as far beck as 5,000 years ago. We can't say for certain when the shirk from Monotheism and the sky clad or dog walking rituals started, but it does seem likely enough that they became more common after the appearance of not only Judaism, but the Arabic language. Suwrah 9 was completely learned next to last, but 110 was the last learned in full, but the lack of starting with those 19 letters means the total "With the name of God (in the Arabic singular and definitive), Most Beneficent, Most Merciful." As much as the time period and other conditions are important to consider, all of All Qoor'aan is meant to be observed and it always has context to give reason for hope and to prevent injustice. Actually, the polytheism was only banned in Mecca and discouraged elsewhere. Prophet Muhammad regarded the Mazdayasnahe Zarathushtrahe/Kanuwn Zardosht as people of the Book and allowed the monotheist women among them to be married according to the condition in Quran. The permitted faiths were a category before Umar and Uthman. Prophet Muhammad allowed Christians to convert people and protected apostates from Islam in Medinah. The Saudi Arabian Antiquities Department does not hold the position that polytheism was wiped out of Arabia and proves it increased under the Omayyad tyranny. 12/9 Al Hijra as the time when this was revealed makes some Quran only people think the months were 12, 1, 2 instead of 7, and 3 instead of 11. The lack of an official collective pilgrimage in the 8th year, people doing Hajj in an Islamic fashion, and the Greater Pilgrimage of Prophet Muhammad. Who is to say whether or not ih*ram clothing was revived or new for this age? Bohari Mustarri Tayib splitting to Dawudi and Sulaimani Buhra and their descent from the Fatamids Agha Khani being connected to Najran in Saudi Arabia is an important point, but the Saudi Arabian and no less that 39 other Muslim majority countries added to suppression of Islamic teaching and practice from more than just a sect or two, but actual Islam is their open enemy to a degree. Every scholar or country that acts as if it has the right to define who has problems with their belief aside from them not fully believing in Al Qoor'aan and putting what they belief to be Prophet Muhammad's teaching second has violated their rights. Heresy is the key to temporal and spiritual enlightenment.

actually Syaikh did it, there was a good speach by Syaikh Yasir about incident of Karbala, and i think the incident was one of the worst incident in the history of ummah and cause the mayor splits between sunni and shiah

I'm wondering if abu bakr & those that were him did hajj the old ways that time did they not say certain words like the Arab pagans say in their old hajj rituals? Also if prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went to do hajj back when he lived in mecca did he avoid doing the rituals at places that had idols there like doing the tawaf at the kaaba & going back & forth at Safa and Marwa? Did he even say what the pagans used to say back then too when they did hajj or did he even say anything back then? I find this confusing

one thing im confused about in this video is he said the prophet (saw) didnt do hajj 9th hijri due to mushriks being there and that they will be naked. but shaykh said prophet (saw) did hajj before hijrah. if this is the case then why was is appropriate then but not later?

Episode 99 Notes: The Hajj of Abu Bakr RA In the 8 AH there was no Hajj performed by the Prophet SAW or any large group of Muslims. This was due to Taif being hostile to the Muslims at the time and due to its close proximity to Makkah. However, a small group of Muslims did perform Hajj in 8 AH led by Attab Ibn Asid RA, who was appointed the new governor of Makkah after its conquest. Therefore, in 9AH the Prophet SAW sent Abu Bakr RA with 300 Muslims to Makkah in order to perform Hajj. Shortly after Abu Bakr RA left with the Hajj caravan, Allah SWT revealed Ayah’s 1-37 of Surah At Tawbah, stating that all treaties with Polytheists are null and void in 4 months’ time. It also stated that all Pagans must convert to Islam or leave Arabia. The Prophet SAW then tasked Ali RA to go to Abu Bakr RA. Ali RA reached Abu Bakr RA and informed him that, he is still the leader of the caravan. Abu Hurairah RA was also present. When they arrived at Makkah, Ali RA and Abu Hurairah RA went around Makkah reciting the new Ayahs from Surah At Tawbah. Then 4 announcements were made: 1. Only a Muslim will enter Jannah 2. No one is allowed to perform Tawaf naked (This was enforced from 9 AH) 3. No Mushrik can ever perform Tawaf again (This was enforced from 10 AH) 4. All non-timed contracts with Polytheists will end in 4 months Abu Bakr RA, Ali RA and the 300 Muslims then proceed to perform their Hajj. - Expedition of Khalid Ibn Al Walid RA to Najran Najran consisted of Christian and Polytheist tribes. The former of whom, had already made a treaty with the Muslims in order to pay Jizya. The Prophet SAW sent Khalid Ibn Al Walid RA to Najran, in order to tell the Polytheists there to convert to Islam, pay Jizya or prepare for war. The people were given 3 days and they decided to all convert to Islam. Khalid RA sent a letter to the Prophet SAW informing him of this and the Prophet SAW asked Khalid RA to send a delegation of the new Muslims to Medina. The Prophet SAW then tested the Eman of the new Muslims and was pleased. The Prophet SAW then sent Amr Ibn Hazam RA to be their governor. Fun Trivia fact: Najran in modern times follows Ismailism. Fun Trivia fact: The Fatimids created the term Dawah and Da’ee. Fun Trivia fact: 9 AH is the only time that Muslims and Polytheists performed Hajj together in Makkah. Fun Trivia fact: Surah At Tawbah contains the famously misused Ayah 5 also known as the Verse of the Sword. This Ayah only applies to the Polytheists of Makkah and those in the Arabian Peninsula. Fun Trivia fact: Upon hearing good news, you should say Allahu Akbar and its Sunnah. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW had time clauses for more than 4 months with some Arab pagans. Thus Allah SWT revealed in Surah At Tawbah that, those treaties be honoured until they expire. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW did not perform Hajj in 9 AH because the pagans in Makkah performed their Hajj naked and the Prophet SAW did not want to perform Hajj until this is reformed. Fun Trivia fact: The Polytheist Makkan’s would perform Hajj naked because of two reasons. Firstly they believed they want to be pure around the Ka’ba and the second reason was because they believed that, their clothes were full of sin thus they did Tawaf naked. Even the women would do it naked but they did it at night. Fun Trivia fact: None of the Muhajirun were allowed to go back to Makkah permanently due to the Hijrah. How different from the teachings of Jesus and the bible. What a huge gapping difference from the words of the Savior who said: Pray for your enemies, and love your enemies, if someone strike you on the cheek, give the other. "those to use the sword, will die by the sword". "thou shalt NOT kill". What religion is this that promotes a God who gives people an ultimatum, you either convert, get out or get killed. That is a false view of who God is, who says "I take no delight in the death of evil men". Conversion is between you and God, it cannot be commended, it is not an outward reform or confession , it is not a pass to belong to a certain group of people but a pass to back to the heart of God, from the years living stranged from him. God does not see the outward but he reads the heart. If our religion is just for looks of political affiliation we are doomed.

How can u justify living in America like that? Rasool Allah werent a Rasool then (S.A.W)... he left as soon as he (S.A.W) could and disliked it enough to not even return for HAJJ. Also Syrian and Palestinian refugees might not have any place to go but you guys have left your very peaceful homes in Muslim lands, easily accessible. And it is not the same level of filth here and there brother. No body looks down on me for wearing a hijab here... we dont need to sugar coat anything when it comes to Islam. Tomorrow if any 16 year old Muslim in America decides to change their gender, no parent of theirs has a choice in it... where do u see that in Muslim lands? Where do u see alchohal and zina that prevalent? We have been told to be careful of the friends we make because bad friends will drag us to hell with them... what do u think the ruling is for the entire surrounding of a person pulling one down?!
