The 7 reasons...
We go with Version 1 and not Versions 2 and 3 for the following 7 reasons:
1. Claiming that Iblis can inspire RasulAllah sall Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam (even though iT explained it in a way) interferes with the process of wahy and Allah has guaranteed the process of wahy in SO MANY verses. It would argue that the revelation was not falsified and here we know what is true from what is false
2. There is no authentic version of the qisaat'l-gharaneek. Every version in Tabari and Wahadi is weak and none goes back to RasulAllah sAaws. The strongest goes back to a tabi'i. Even ibn Hajar and ibn Taymiyyah admit this.
3. Even if we forget the isnad analysis, look at the story itself: there are so many versions of it. Another version is that RasulAllah sAaws was sleepy and he messed up. Another version says that RasulAllah sAaws was in salah at the ka'bah when reciting. And another version says that he was sitting in the gathering, reciting.
4. No authentic book of hadith mentions this incident - not even ibn Hisham and ibn Ishaq (the authentic books of seerah). They are found in the tertiary sources.
5. (This point is the biggest for YQ!) Contextual analysis of the verses. Verses 19-20 show that what will follow will be criticism because of the istifham qaari (derogatory questioning). Even in English, you do not speak like this when speaking of something to be honoured. Then comes the verse after ("unjust division"). If the satanic verses are inserted, the story makes no sense. From criticism to praise to criticism, it doesn't work linguistically or contextually!
6. (Pointed out by Muhammad Abdu - mufti of Egypt d. 1905 CE) Even linguistically it makes no sense because the word gharaneek has never been used in pre-Islamic poetry to refer to the idols. This would be the only time it is found - in this story. If Shaytaan really wanted to fool the pagans, he would choose a word that they recognized.
7. We have the authentic story of Bukhaari with a good enough explanation and the power of the Qur'an and everything makes sense. Why would we resort to the Satanic Verses? Ibn Abbas radhi Allahu anh said the power of the surah was so much that the Muslims, mushriks, jinn, and ins all prostrated except one man raising dirt to his forehead (Waleed b. Mugheerah or Umayya b. Khalaf).
Modern researcher as to where this story came from:
Even legends have a basis. There is a modern historian who theorizes that when the Quraysh prostrated, they felt embarrassed they had become so emotional. As a result, they said the reason they did this was because RasulAllah sall Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam had agreed to praise their idols.
Sadly, we cannot find a classic reasoning. It is reality that the tabi'oon narrated it, but none of the Companions mentioned it.
Q&A
1. How could iT say that shaytaan created or managed to come forth with some qur'an? Nobody would say he was successful in that attempt. Realize that a lot of people have attempted to fabricate qur'an (e.g. Musaylimah) and have never succeeded.
2. According to version 3, Shaytaan added while Jibril was paused in revelation.

He explained that Ibn Taymiyya's position doesn't say that the Qur'an is not protected. Because Allah subhana wa ta3ala corrected the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salaam according to Ibn Taymiyya hence the Quran we have today. Yassir Qadir has 7 arguments for why Al-Bukhari's version is correct. If you want more arguments look into Sheikh al-Albani's work and the majority of Scholars' arguments.

I am Hindu watching this Seerah series to understand the personality of Prophet Mohammad from a authentic Muslim perspective. No doubt Yasir Qadhi Sahab has done a fantastic job. This episode was really mind blowing . As a non Muslim, Prophet Mohammad earns my respect millions times more in the the 3rd version of the incident ( along with beautiful interpretation by the Muslim scholar who supports it ). It shows Prophet was a truly a humble man who isn’t shy from revealing his mistakes. No intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments just sharing my thoughts.

For me I believe in version 1 and strongly oppose version 3 as Muhammad SAW definitely will realize instantaneously when he starts reciting those verses of praising the idols and he will never praise Quraish's fake gods. Our Prophet Muhammad SAW is the wisest person and he will recognize immediately those verses are not coming from Jibril AS as soon as Prophet SAW hears and he will not recite it. AssalamuAlaikum, in my humble opinion we know of many stories where prophet saw recited quran and kaifrs either cried or stopped him or got scared.This surah if we read it from start to finish we see that it comprehensively narrates everything in a nutshell.And then ends in a commanding tone hence nobody could dare not to follow it .They fell prostrate because Allah commanded after explaining them. Of course they recovered from their state and had to make up a story why they fell in prostration and hence fabricated this that we dint fall prostrate to Mohammed's (saw) Lord alone we heard something else.Very suitable to the tactics if Quraish. And we also have one man for sure who dint fell in prostration speaks that he dint hear anything abt his idols then how can others? And again we know satan ran away from hazrath omar ra so how can we think he had the guts to be around prophet saw and that too when he saw was reciting the word of Allah? we can sure divide arguments in different ways but only infront of NON MUSLIMS but we muslims r like a family we have an understanding of intagible emotions,miracle of Allah and Intelligence and Speciallty of Prophet mohammed saw. We know his saw body parts were washed with zamzam.we know he fell asleep when he saw went to musical marraige function.So we know Allah protected him every minor filth innerwards and outwards.we know His saw mother said that when he saw was born there was no blood or mucous on his saw body. we know prophet saw asked us to stay away from confusing things. yes non muslims can make up their stories,logically we can only answer them back by saying that quraish n people who hated islam can never digest that everyone fell in prostration so its more than easy n befitiing to make a story that saves their ego. hence version is actually what happened and when nobody could refuse it so all they could do is add up to make it suitable/digestable for their ears and to the ears of their clan and their likes.

This passage may refer to the inability of the Shayateen to bring the weighty verses down: they are not fit for the task, not can they do it even if they are assigned with the task, and as they are distanced from Allah, they can't even hear it from Him, let alone bring it down from him. The task requires a Trustworthy Spirit like Jibril (a.s) to bring it down to the heart of Nabi (sall.) as mentioned in verses 193-194. But once a human recites it, the shayateen can hear it, and that's why the Quran is used to exorcise those possesed by jinn. And even in a hadith, a shaytan tells a sahabi to recite ayat-ul-kursi if he doesn't want to meet him again. Allahu A'lam

1st version very easily. Your heart will also agree with this version 100 percent as long as the Noor of Iman illuminates it. Regarding rest of the versions, since the isnad are weak we can easily reject them on these basis. Moreover, version 3 also contradicts the authenticity of the Wahi a little bit even considering Ibn Tayimmah view point. And regarding Ibn Tayimmah, if he has considered Prophet Muhammad (SAW) of making a judgemental mistake regarding this revelation. Why can't we accept that Ibn Tayimmah made a judgemental mistake as well ?

Episode 16 Notes: Qisaat’l Gharaneek/“The Satanic Verses” Incident Three months after the 15 Sahabah went to Abyssinia they heard a rumour. The rumour was that, “the Quraysh have all accepted Islam” and this caused the Sahabah to leave Abyssinia. Only to get half way to Makkah and learn that it was all an excessively exaggerated rumour and that the Quraysh, had not accepted Islam at all. The story behind this rumour was due to the fact that, the Quraysh had gone into sajdah, with the Muslims after the Prophet SAW finished reciting Surah An Najm. This story has created controversy in the contemporary era, because of the fact that, there are several versions of this event. And the detractors of Islam go with the weak versions over the sahih account as foretold by Muslim scholars. Basically, this is a “controversy” that was created by an orientalist called William Muir and it was controversy based on Islamic sources. William is the one who coined the term, The Satanic Verses. One day, The Prophet SAW was reciting Surah An Najm in front of Muslims and the Quraysh, and at the end he went into sajdah. When SAW did this, the Muslims followed the Prophet SAW into sajdah. But, because of the sheer power of this surah, So did, all of the Quraysh apart from one Qurashi. And this is the version of actual events as we know them from Sahih Bukhari. So why is there controversy? This isn’t the only version of that event, that exists in Islamic sources. There are many other versions. In one version Iblis cried when he heard Surah An Najm and then recited two other verses of his own, that only the Quraysh heard. And this is why the Quraysh, went into Sajdah. Another version states that, The Prophet SAW heard Iblis’s recite his own verses and then couldn’t differentiate them from Jibreel AS’s voice. So, thus he recited them during his recitation which, then led to the Quraysh assuming, that Muhammad SAW had finally decided to syncretise Islam with Arab Paganism and this is why, they went into Sajdah. Essentially, these stories give other reasons as to why the Quraysh went into sajdah. But there are a multitude of problems with these alternative versions such: as the fact that: #1 There is no authentic version of the Satanic Verses incident. #2 Nor can any of these versions be found in any reliable book of hadith #3 The chain of isnad is very weak for these versions. So, when you consider all of those points, these other versions are in no way authentic. Thus its just nonsense and there is only one authentic version as reported in Sahih Bukhari. All other versions can be ignored. Although, it should be mentioned that some Muslim scholars do subscribe to the other versions, as well as the sahih version and they have their own opinions on why. But, the majority of Muslims believe the Quraysh prostrated simply due to the power of Surah An Najm and that all other versions are false. Fun Trivia fact: Salman Rushdie’s book is named after the false versions of the above event. But, it’s a complete work of fiction. @@abubakr8232 v1 : that when the prophet (SAW) finished reciting surah al najam, muslims and the qureshi (non muslims amongst them) all fell into sajdah because of how overwhelming it was. Except for person either its Uqbah or Waleed bin Mugheerah who instead of falling into sajdah brought the sand up to face and rubbed on his forehead. V2 : that when the prophet (SAW) was recting surah al najam shaytaan cried and added two verses to it and the non muslims heard it but not the muslims thus why they too fell in sajdah. V3: while the prophet(SAW) was reciting Ibless added two verses and the prophet (SAW) mistakenly took them as Gibreel's (AS) voice and recited them too so this is why the non muslims fell into sajdah believing that Prophet (SAW) had finally compromised.

My understanding of the ayah in surah al-hajj is that Shaytan tries to throw confusion into the verses. For example, there is an ayah that the meat of pig is haram. An example of confusion being thrown into that verse would be whispering to the people, "so why can't we use the fat, the skins, the gelatin?"

A very interesting lecture by the Shaykh, may Allah SWT reward him. As for engaging in debate with, in particular, certain modern day Christians who want to try to go on about this "topic" (putting aside there is again no Sahih source for the story whatsoever as Shaykh Qadhi clearly and definitively notes) this is a really strange "argument" coming from them. As, among other things, there "New Testament" says Paul was smitten with a "thorn of satan" 2 Corinthians 12:16 and see Matthew 4:8, etc.

I personally fail to understand why the "incident of the satanic verses" is so problematic. For example lets say version 3 is 100% authentic and correct, lets say its reported in various reports of bukhari - so what's the issue? Allah allowed the prophet (saw) on this particular incident to make a mistake of thinking these verses from the shaythan were from jibreel. This would not be a major sin it would only be a minor sin has a sin down without intention and unknowingly is not really a sin. Allah allowed it so as to test us and the Qur'an was not corrupt, the verse of surah hajj was revealed to show us what happened and preserve the Qur'an and the Qur'an was preserved. So even if version 3 were correct I PERSONALLY DON'T SEE ANY PROBLEMS. If version 3 were true, regarding why would the prophet (saw) actually read the verses out as there completely illogical (you've been preaching Tawheed for so long why would you know be commanded to say these verses?). Perhaps they could be explanations for this maybe it's to do with his submission to Allah that I will not question what is been revealed to me. Also to receive wahey is so difficult (refer to hadith on receiving wahey sweating and so fourth) so perhaps he read it not realising what he was reading then jibreel carried on revealing the rest of the surah so the prophet (saw) carried on reading. Regarding the reason some people may find the whole incident problematic in that the prophet could not distinguish between what jibreel and shaythan are reavling/reading to him of the Qur'an. This is not controversial or a problem as Allah said he would protect the Qur'an and hence did Allah protect it in this incident by revealing the verse in surah hajj. The so called satanic verse where contextually and linguistically out of sink so Allah got rid of them and protected the Qur'an. Allah is constantly protecting and preserving the Qur'an. These satatnic verses where clearly not appart of the Qur'an and could never have been confused to be apart of it. Proof that Allah preserved the Qur'an is that he said he would preserve it and has guaranteed this so long as you believe in the Qur'an then you have no problem in believing it was preserved and protected. And the Qur'an is a miracle itself and provides evidence as to why it is the truth and therefore this means the Qur'an was protected because the qur'an is the truth and allah said in the qur'an that he would preserve the qur'an. So in conclusion worst case sanario the 3rd version is true; it's not problamatic at all. If the 2nd version was true then its understandable. If the 1st version were true I guess that would probably seem the most logical. The whole issue of satanic verses is not even problematic and is been given too much weight and time for a trivial issue.

This story illustrates the sincerity of the prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) , he recited what he was asked to recite and did not apply any filter on the revelation, however as Allah is the protector, we have the revelation as intended by ALLAH. It would have been difficult to accept that the quran is from ALLAH if the prophet applied his own filters.

I find option 3 possible. It seems that Allah has allowed certain contentious issues to persist to test our faith and to separate the true believers from those who desire swerving. This is the same reason Allah has put clear verses in the Qur'an and other verses which are allegorical. I also think it is probably the reason that the prophet [saw] was allowed to marry Aisha [ra] at the age of 6 and consummate at age 9 knowing this would cause a huge point for Islamophobes to latch onto. Allah knows best but we should not shy away from difficulties just because the non-believers think it refutes Islam.
