I was aware of Dante’s Inferno but I never knew that there was a purification process for the souls that are allowed to ascend. I loved learning this

This is a Catholic dogma and that's why we pray for the souls in purgatory. Only Saints reach the Heaven, purgatory is to clean every unclean souls in order to make them Saint while they are closer and closer to Heaven. It is beautiful.

Yeah, Dante obviously based this on a book that almost made canon called The Apocalypse of Peter.... some Christian fathers wanted instead of Revelation
