Ingredients
For marination
mackerel 1 kg
salt as required
a pinch of turmeric powder
For masala
25 red chilies
10-12 garlic pods | 1 tbsp
ginger 1 piece finely chopped | 1 tbsp
10 peppercorns
cinnamon 2 sticks
1 tbsp cumin seeds
turmeric 3/4 tbsp
sugar 1 tsp
salt 1 tsp
coconut oil
For seasoning
8-9 curry leaves
1/2 tbsp finely chopped ginger
1/2 tbsp finely chopped garlic
vinegar as required | 1 and half cup

Hello Mrs Correa. I tried your recipe here in Connecticut yesterday using Spanish Mackerel. It came out delicious. It is such an easy recipe and yes time consuming but all worth it. I refrigerated both my containers to use during the cold snowy winters.May God continue to bless you as you share and inspire, teach and motivate many to cook these traditional dishes! Cheers!

It's delicious and fish pickle is my favourite. I like to use it with paze (boiled rice cooked with more water and eating without removing that starch water)

Using your hands to add the masala to the vessel only adds more flavor to the yummy mackerel pickle. Thats why everyone will always praise his or her mothers cooking cause it’s always cooked with love and care 💕 Thank you for sharing.

Should we remove the bones from the mackerels after they are fried. Having the bones in the pickle is difficult for some people. Please let me know. Thank you

No not necessary. Fish is enjoyed in it's tough form..but if u wish so you can do so no problem..but do it after frying

You should have added two more ingredients in it fenugreek seeds 1tsp and 1/2 to 3/4 tsp asafetida it would become more dashi-licious delicious 👍

Yummy..hailing from mangalore, I love everything made with whole spices ground to paste. All kerala recipes were made with chilli powder. Will try this with sardines. Which vinegar did you use? Im not comfortable using white vinegar. Can you please tell me if there is any substitute.? Apple cider or rice wine vinegar

@@SefraCorrea Thank you so much for the response. My friends who do pickles always said only white vinegar should be used otherwise it wil change the flavor. But goans usually do it with homemade palm vinegar so I always wanted to try apple cider 😍🥰.

It is good coconut oil ok for cooking ...ancient times all coastal people used to have d virgin oil ...as it was easily available ok

Hi Sefra C 🙂 I just got confused with Mackrel Para and Mackrel pickle. I did comment u on Mackrel Para. And yes I have made this fresh Mackrel Pickle awhile ago and it did turned out delicious. Im overseas so its hard to get dried mackrels. So I preferred this fresh Mackrel pickle. Does these Mackrel have to be washed in vinegar or water.? Thsnks for sharing.🙂

I personally do not use seed oils in my cooking n I would neither suggest anyone to do so because they contain PUFA (poly unsaturated fatty acids), where as coconut oil is made of saturated fatty acids which is a healthier option.

Thank you, will surely try this! Since you are very strict on using coconut oil, will do the same! However, is the fish 1 kg before cleaning or after cleaning? Also, which vinegar did you use? I am planning to use homeade apple cider vinegar!

@@MarielynCorrea are you eurasisn. The singapore Eurasians in singapore where i am from also have yr surname. My grandfather is frm Goa. Cant remember which area. Merry christmas. If made properly it can last fr months. We use vinegar and tamarind to thicken and preserve. Yes i love this appetiser. Just had it at my sisters fr xmas lunch yestdy. 👌

it becomes hard because the moisture is removed, so it has longer shelf live when it is soaked in the pickle it will become soft as it matures.

After marinating u can dry it in d hot sun n then fry ....n follow d method ...or after frying also to can dry iron d sun for few hours ...n continue process but dont keep d finished product in d sun

Thank you for sharing. This is the best fish pickle. I learnt it from my good friend many years ago. Her mother and grandmother came from Goa to Malaysia. It been a favourite for the past 20 years.

Hi Sefra C.🙂 Such a delicious recipe.I did make it but I doubled the quantity of the recipe and kept in fridge. It's over a year yet there is alot more left. So is it ok to consume although its a year and a half years old. Its definite in the fridge. Please let me know.Thanks for sharing.🙂

Yes but wash it with vinegar n wipe it dry .....n Fry it n then put it in d masala or put it in d masala before frying n wen want to eat u.must shallow fry on a pan to consume it

Best way to spoil the non stick pan, using a metal spoon Please use wooden spoon, I was wincing when you were scratching the pan with your metal spoon. For any pickle and sauces and when cooking in a non stick pan use only wooden spoon. BTW you receipe looks delicious, will definitely try it. Bless you for sharing.

Non stick pans are toxic n carcinogenic, we use cast iron pans.
