The Sega 32X extended the life and capabilities of the original Sega Genesis while Sega fans waited the release of the Saturn. Games Featured: After Burner Complete, Atari Karts, BattleSphere, BC Racers, Blue Lightning, Bubsy, Checkered Flag, Darxide, Doom, Fever Pitch Soccer, FIFA Soccer 96, Fight for Life, Hover Strike, Iron Soldier, Kasumi Ninja, Knuckles' Chaotix, Metal Head, Mortal Kombat II, Motocross Championship, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Primal Rage, Rayman, Shadow Squadron / Stellar Assault, Soccer Kid, Supercross 3D, Tempo, T-MEK, Ultra Vortek, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Zero-5, Zool 2

I actually had both systems as akid, and not because my parents were rich or anything. I live in an area BURIED in snow a little more than half the year, and lawns that need mowing consistently during the summer. When I was 10 I got a few neighborhood friends together and we did snow removal and lawn care services. I more or less got to have anything I wanted. I was far more of a Sega fanboy myself, but I grew up with a 2600, a 5200, and a 7200 eventually, and my first 8-bit computer was an Atari 800 XL. Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane.

Well done! I am a Sega 32X owner and love the system. Sadly I missed out on the Jaguar. For the time the 32X had some very impressive hardware. Again it amazes me that it was not the home for more of Sega's impressive 32 bit arcade games. Many of those games never had a home console release. With that said it is nice to see many of these retro consoles get more attention especially with all the bloated, incomplete, microtransactions infected AAA games of today sapping the fun out of video games. BTW I used to not be a fan of Knuckles Chaotix but after giving it a chance and better understanding the rubber band mechanic, it became one of my favorite games on the systems. I am also really enjoying the fan hacks like Doom Resurrection and enjoy being able to play them on real hardware. TBH I am more excited about the news and release of those fan hacks than many current gen game releases. I hope this trend continues and would love to see more official physical releases for old consoles especially with physical media dying. Keep up the great work.

Yeah i absolutely loved the 32X when I was a kid (and have one today); it was like this mystical thing that only a few kids had, and my best friend had one (I was always over there). It was legitimately something that people were jealous of on the playground lol. Like, it's only really from a business / adult perspective that the 32X "sucked"; i mean EVERY kid wanted one where I lived. Virtua Fighter was just epic; best home port of Mortal Kombat 2; Virtua Racing was mind blowing at that time; the ports of Space Harrier & After Burner were just fantastic.. absolutely great stuff; just not a whole lot of it. However, I must say about Knuckles Chaotix: I've beaten that game in it's entirety at least 4 or 5 times. First thing is, like you said: Once you get used to the mechanics, it does become 2nd nature. There are all kinds of techniques that even the most hardcore Chaotix fans don't know how to do (based on the playthroughs ive seen on KZbin). Like if you just trudge forward dragging the other character along and try to play it like a traditional Sonic game, then yeah, that's not much fun. (This sounds like how Mr. Greg here was approaching it, along with most people; which is understandable, as it looks like a Sonic game). But if you really learn how it works, it's pretty, very creatively fun to control; it feels really cool to be able to pull of all the different dual character mechanics tricks (In fact I think it would awesome to add some bonus stages in other Sonic games that play like this) However, there's 1 major problem, that has nothing to do with the controls: Once you master the controls and are ready for some challenge.. there is none. Virtually NO enemies, no real obstacles or challenges or anything. Many levels, in fact, most of the levels: literally have only 1 to 2 enemies on the entire level; and those levels are massive! The most I've ever seen is 3.. mayyyybe 4 on one level.. It's like running through an absolutely beautiful Sonic world (the graphics are so colorful and just fantastic; with equally amazing music), but a very EMPTY, beautiful Sonic world. There's just nothing going on. I could understand a couple of early stages being a little barren to give you a chance to get used to the controls; like a "training level" per say. But every single level throughout the game is a "training level". It's such a shame because I would love to actually be able to put my hard-learned Chaotix skills to the test with some enemies and obstacles and puzzle'y sort of platforming sections.. but there is just nothing of that in the game. It's very similar to when you get a good future in Sonic CD, where it gets rid of all the enemies on the stage and you just coast through with nothing to stop you. But even more simplified than that, as there's no tricky platform situations or anything either. I really wish they would have populated those levels in Chaotix with enemies and challenges; It would have been such a great game. But as it is: it just feels incomplete and empty I would love to see a fully fleshed out sequal that adds these missing essential elements; but that will probably never happen, since the original didn't sell well and wasn't recieved very well critically; which, in my opinion, is because of the emptiness of the game; not the fault of the controls as many would have you believe. That's just my 10 cents though

My roommate and I played the hell out of Hover Strike on the Jag. It has a mode where one player drives and the other shoots, and that’s mostly how we played it. It improves the experience immensely. And the CD sequel to Hover Strike is even better. Like you I also loved T-Mek in the arcade, but I’d take Hover Strike over it any day. I think it’d be worth trying co-op Hover Strike and going deeper into the game before passing judgement on this one.

As good as Hoverstrike was, the CD version which moved coding away from the 68000 to the GPU only saw an extra 3-5 fps increase, Atari should of kept Hoverstrike as a Jag CD exclusive, ditched the cart version. Would still of liked to of seen it in it's original, Battlezone 2000 form

The funny thing about the Jaguar version of Doom is that while the music isn’t heard during the gameplay, it’s actually heard when you finished a certain level. For some of you who didn’t know this, an example would be At Doom’s Gate and unlike the 32X version, the background music from it is instead full of quacking ducks. And for the Pitfall one, what’s with that weird letterbox format that the Jaguar version had during the gameplay?

@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt I'm getting conflicting reports on whether or not the Atari ST is planar or chunky pixel. But I have one table stating the Atari ST is planar and the Jaguar is chunky pixels. The SNES port of Dungeon Master includes a co-pro to convert the original Atari ST version's graphics from packed/chunky pixels into planar graphics.

Like most of the console ports from that era, 32X Doom is actually based on the Jaguar version- it has the same cuts to the levels, with Containment Area (E2M2 in the original) suffering the worst but most maps losing at least some areas. The Jaguar version was actually developed by John Carmack so it's no surprise it ended up being much better than the others. One other odd thing with the 32X version: the BFG 9000 is only accessible via cheat codes. Presumably this is because none of the episode 3 levels made it into the final release, so there were no maps in the game that had a BFG already placed in them! (Though if I remember correctly the Jaguar version puts one in E2M3, so I'm not sure why that one didn't make its way into the 32X version.)

The one thing that plagued the 32x was the fact that they let the Genesis render backgrounds and do a lot of the music so you still got a lot of the same grainy graphics and a symphony of farts you got on the Genesis so it wasn't much of an upgrade most of the time.

Iohn Carmack on 32X vs Jaguar Doom: Atari shipped the jaguar with a fairly serious hardware bug: the risc chips cannot reliably execute code unless it lies in the on-chip caches, which are only 4k and 8k in size. You can break your program up into a lot of overlays, but it is a big time consuming hassle, so virtually all jaguar games are going to execute the majority of their code on the 68k, which is only about one tenth the speed of the risc chips. The jag has lots of speed in it, you just need to sweat a bit to get at it. In contrast, the Sega 32X is less powerful, but very easy to get the speed (they have a GCC compiler for the SH2 chips). DOOM will be showing up on both the Jag and the 32X. The jag version will be a bit better, but it will have over twice the man-hours put into it. I am just now testing a dynamic overlay scheme that automatically caches position independant code on the local ram. It will be slower than hand-overlaying everything, but still several times faster than running on the 68k. John Carmack

That was an oversight on the Chuck Rock 32X port I guess, cause the Sega CD version you could attack on both sides. For Doom the 32X port was based on the Jag code and was a really quick and dirty port. Doom Resurrection shows what the system is capable of. It's not a hack, as it doesn't use the original 32X code. It's a total re-port... and in addition to being fullscreen, it supports higher resolution, and runs faster. Actually every single aspect is improved. Even the controls. You can also use the Sega CD in conjunction to get CD audio. You really need to play it side by side although I understand why you didn't include it here.

I'm here to stick up for BC Racers. Here's the thing. The 32X game is running too fast on emulation (or at least Fusion) so it's too hard. The Sega CD version is the one to play because it's the right speed, even though the frame rate is poor. The Sega CD version still manages to be fun because you can win quite easily, unlike the 32X version. One other thing people miss about BC Racers when comparing it to Atari Carts or Mario Kart is that BC Racers has alot of trackside object that are all scaling. In the other two games, scenery is only sprite swapping and very little of it. Giving BC Racers tracks alot more character. I admit BC Racers is a bit shallow but as a short burst of fun, I think it's the better cart racer.

I actually really want a Jaguar; Ive played a lot of the games on an emulator with my Saturn controller, but only the cartridge games (which seems to be most of them); theres not really a working emulator for the CD games. I actually enjoy Zool 2. I like it better than Knuckles Chaotix. Knuckles Chaotix would've been great if they added ENEMIES in the game lol; there's literally like 1 or 2 enemies in each level; and those levels are massive; it's like just running through a beautiful, but just empty Sonic world with another character awkwardly, and quite literally attached at the hip lol What are some high recommendations for the Jaguar / Jaguar CD?

It seems for the Jaguar you didn't get to include a bunch of the titles that either are distinctive or well liked like Tempest 2000 vs ??? on the 32X what is like Tempest 2000 on the 32X? Cybermorph and Battlemorph I don't think you included in this video the penguin game on the Jaguar, what is like it on the 32X? Dino dudes or the humans, the 32X doesn't have a comparison other than doom (which the Jaguar obviously has), what game does the 32X have like Alien vs Predator

How is Metal Head more like a first-person shooter while Mech Warrior is "more like a mech game", when they both use the same perspective?

Metal Head - I really dislike when games try to make levels look larger than they are by putting buildings as a backdrop. Personally, I'd rather just have fog. While short draw distances suck, I'd rather have nothing there rather than a drawing of buildings that sticks out like a sore thumb. I disliked this trick in the Driver games on the PS1 as well.

The error Sega made, was not releasing the 32x for the price they did ... 32x was worth the price as hardware itself. The prove of that is the fact that the first 6 months after the release it sold incredibly good . The real 2 big mistake Sega did, was as first to give credit to the Theory of Sega of America at the time, which was considering interactive film as the future of the gaming (🤮🤮🤮), the second was to release the Sega Saturn in 1994 instead of 1996 or even 1997. 32x in less than 2 years since his release, had far more killer applications than Sega Saturn in the same amount of time. Virtua Racing Deluxe, did on 32x , what Daytona USA didn't on Sega Saturn. Virtua Racing Deluxe, in the 3 class of cars you can choose, include the "Stock cars" , and handling of those cars, was much more similar to the handling of the cars of Daytona USA coin op, than the cars of all the conversion those game had on Sega Saturn; not much people ever mentioned that when talking about Virtua Racing Deluxe, and that is disappointing me. 32X also had the conversion of Virtua Fighter, which had better gameplay than the version for Sega Saturn. But also gems of games like Chaotiks, which was ( at least for my opinion) the best Sonic Spin off ever exist. Star Wars Arcade, was also a miracle of program development specially if compared with games like "Starfox 64" ... The 32x itself had the possibility to give at least 4 years of long life to Sega Genesis, what fucked it up, it was the Sega management. If Sega Saturn was going to be released 2/3 years later, also had more probabilities to challenge Sony on the market.

As bad as Checkered Flag was I actually got some enjoyment out of it. Enough to beat the game. Also it has awful AI too. Virtra Racing Deluxe is my favorite game on the 32x and with that I obviously choose VRD too. I heard there is a hack for Checkered Flag that fixes some of the problems with it. If only I could find a physical copy that be great. Id really like to play that game with the correct improvements. It could've been so much more.

They also described the game as a contractal affair.. Atari paid for a plain, polygon racing game and that's what Rebellion delivered. They also hinted Atari wouldn't let them have full control over the quality side, being more concerned about getting the game out on the shelf, so they had as many titles available for the Xmas period.

You're playing Knuckles Chaotix wrong. First of all, the rubber band mechanic was to facilitate 2-player, but if you play it single player, you're supposed to use the hold button to sling shot off of your partner. While you do have a spindash, it's not very good in Chaotix, and you should avoid using it. You can also carry your partner, and there's a button that makes your partner come to your position. You didn't use any of these mechanics, so no wonder you didn't like the game.

I thought Knuckles Chaotix was pretty decent once you figure it out, though it might be Stockholm syndrome talking. At least back in the day I'd certainly take it over Zool, Bubbsy and Soccer Kid. I'd say the only platformer on the Jaguar which is better than Knuckles Chaotix is Rayman, and that was also going to be released on the 32X but sadly didn't. Those Jaguar rivals are games that could have been easily released on the Mega Drive (in fact, Soccer Kid has an unreleased Mega Drive version which still didn't see the light of day).

jaguar loses automatically due to the 32X having Afterburner, Space Harrier (both at 30 fps but still), Virtua Fighter and Racer.. thats it .... end of the argument.. those 4 games are worth more than the ENTIRE jaguar library.. but to compare further.. there is Metal Head which i think is better than Iron Soldier but hey thats just opinions, Knuckles Chaotix and all its flaws is better than every single platformer on jag but Rayman (even though i hate rayman period, its pretty, but thats it) but even better than all of them is Tempo from red, although the saturn sequel is better...supposedly atari had made a deal with sega due to an out of court settlement to get some of their games, and you can see an old document where they list what was available.. that was atari's only chance and they blew it.. i shouldnt argue with you jaguar apologists.. i hate everything you like.. i hated mortal kombat from the first time i played it when it first came out, it was never as good as japanese fighters, even crap like world heroes and fighters destiny played better..primal rage played even worse..well.. we'll just have to respectfully disagree.. but i still like watching any videos on games to see other peoples takes, even if i disagree.. so keep making your vids!!
