The Dreamcast was so far ahead of it's time, it was the first home console to feature online play, the graphics were mind blowing and many of it's games are very fondly remembered and considered as classics. It's a damn shame that it failed. I love the Playstation 2 but it would have been awesome to see a Dreamcast 2 aswell and maybe even a Dreamcast 3 when the X360 and PS3 came out.

AGREED! The SEGA Dreamcast was the console that really broke my fanboyism towards Nintendo. Even though I enjoyed both Genesis and Super Nintendo. I always preferred Nintendo, and never had the money for a PS1. Dreamcast gave me games like, Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Jet Grind Radio. It helped shape my tastes in way no Nintendo game could ever do.

Thank you for this. I've become a recent collector in anything Sega and have amassed quite a collection. The Dreamcast was an amazing console, but for being just barely better than the PS1 it was too late to the market and devs were too hyped to put out newer and better games for the PS2. So, why would a company continue making PS1/DC games at that point, well they wouldn't...and they didnt.

This sums up my Dreamcast experience,I used to work part time in a gaming outlet back in 2000 during the holiday season,alot of people would come in and check out the Dreamcast and would say,hmmm it looks cool but I think il wait for the PS2,and when the PS2 was released we had a number of people trying to trade in there Dreamcast for PS2s,sad really it was a good machine and if Sega had waited awhile longer and put more work into it they could have had a real winner on their hands.

You missed the absolutley mindboggling event wherein Sega went to E3 and told attendants of their keynote that they were unveling a new console, and that you could essentially buy it immediately. Think how crazy it would be for a console to do that today? I remember walking into my local software store and thinking "is that... THAT IS. It's a SATURN. What is that doing here?!" Developers couldn't market their games effectively and it pissed them off.

Though this video is almost 8 years old, the information still holds. I bought a Sega Dreamcast from Gamestop a couple of months ago. For a system that has a manufacturing date of May 1999, it came in near mint condition. Whoever owned it last took good care of it before selling it to Gamestop. I have Hydro Thunder and Gauntlet Legends for the DC and they are wonderful arcade ports. Compared to the Nintendo 64 and Playstation ports, the DC versions was superior. Had the DC come with a DVD player built in, Things would have been different.

Pretty much at the time, DVDs was becoming the video storage standard that it is today. Plus, at the time it was the cheapest DVD player. So in 2001, wouldnt you want to buy not only a game console that was backwards compatible with original PS games but can also play this new movie storage that eventually will become the primary way on getting your movies.

My cheap mother left me stuck with a Sega Genesis until I was old enough to work (2003), I eventually bought all the consoles I missed out on. The problem for me with the Dreamcast was the lack of console exclusive RPGs, which is probably limited to Phantasy Star Online & Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I looked up the RPG reviews that compared how they played on each console & Dreamcast always came out on the bottom. Sonic in 3D game me headaches, I only ended up keeping 5 of the games I bought.

the problem with sega consoles is that they were always rushing ahead trying to release their stuff before anybody else, thinking making things before other people was more important than sheer quality

I got a little sad / nastalgic starting this video. I never owned any sega systems, but I played a little of each of them. What makes me sad is that while I was always too limited in time and budget to own every console, I always respected sega. I remember the rivalry with the sega genesis growing up. I was part of the console wars, because I only had 1 system, and I wanted the games on my system, and to pick a side justifying my side Still, my friend had a genesis, and the war didnt stop...
@CalcProgrammer111 жыл бұрын
FYI the Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, and Xbox were all 32 BIT consoles. Contrary to what you may believe, the number of bits has little to no bearing on actual game quality after consoles (and PC's) had reached 32. 64 bit operations allow for very accurate computation, but provide little benefit to games which don't need that accuracy. The real performance boosts come from improved CPU and GPU architectures, more RAM, faster clock speeds, and larger storage devices, NOT the number of bits!

Yep... One of those moments in life I've been a complete and utter idiot. I remember these "obsolete" Dreamcasts being for sale a few months after Sega anounced production being halted. Our local electronicsstore had about a dozen of them still in stock and decided to sell them (new in box) WITH every thinkable peripheral, LOTS of extra games (about 15 as I remember correctly) as a "bundle" for Hfl 100,-, which is approx 45 Euro''s.

There is a slight silver lining for the Dreamcast. Some fans still play it today. Those that don’t have one, look for it. Some game devs have even made indie games that play on it. Goes to show people still value the Dreamcast for what it was. Even if it may be very of compared to consoles today. It left a powerful impact on how gaining would evolve.

HAL is busy making Kirby games and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo, and Ape is busy making Pokemon...games on the DS for Nintendo. This could be a reason why the old developers aren't bothering with Earthbound. It's a franchise that isn't a cash cow like the other three I mentioned. I still think the SNES is the best system Nintendo ever released, especially when you look at what its library contains.
