I only played Shenmue and its sequel about 5 years ago on Steam. I was in my late twenties when Dreamcast came out but never had one. I’ve been collecting its games for a while now. Despite the Shenmue games being dated it was one of my greatest gaming experiences. I have a great love for martial arts and going to the arcade to play Sega classics within a video game was beyond a fantastic experience. It was like going back in time.

Such a shame the Dreamcast never soared as it should have. I worked at Walden Software and had a PS2 myself, but the Dreamcast was not popular at all in out store. It was either PS@ or Xbox or Game Cube. It's sad that Sega got out of the console market. Thanks for the video, John.

To me the Dreamcast has had more life and character than any other console. It makes no difference that the console was out for just 2 years when it gave us such a great a game library for decades to come. You either didn’t experience the Dreamcast back then or haven’t gotten into it after the fact. The game library is still there today to be experienced.

It’s a lot cooler that the Dreamcast was the most awesome exclusive experience for all the cool people who knew to get it, and not just blindly waiting for a PS2. When you meet someone who owned a Dreamcast they’ll praise it to high heavens, and it comes from a place exclusivity of knowing how unique, rare and amazing and fun it was. Same thing with the Sega Saturn. It was a commercial failure to some old people in charge of Sega at the time, but was it a failure to you if you owned it and loved it? Not at all. Have you even taken notice when PS2 anniversaries are coming up? I haven’t because the Dreamcast was so much more meaningful to me. I celebrate and appreciate the PS2 as well because i still play the games too, and especially the PS1, but i take a day off from work when it’s Dreamcast anniversary time 🌀

Code Veronica on the DC will always have a special place in my heart. Was going through a difficult time in life during the system's first year. Played Code Veronica while laid up in bed recovering from surgery, thoroughly enjoyed, still do. By far the most underrated game in the Resident Evil franchise, imo.

I really enjoy it too. The 3D world isn’t as dark and immersive as the GC remake for example but it definitely has it’s own charm and magic. It has really amazing atmosphere and puzzles and areas and bosses. There was a time when i hadn’t played it for 15 years and i played the PS2 version and somehow i wasn’t impressed. Maybe because i played it like +10 times when it was new, but not long after that i played it again on the Dreamcast and it was just pure joy and since then i’ve played it some 6-7 more times and absolutely enjoy it like i did before. And i make sure i play it on the DC because that version has the magic. The PS2 and PS3 versions are so far off the DC what it was originally made for. The only thing i dislike is how annoying Steve is and also Alfred, so i just have to skip all the cutscenes basically but i still really love it.

My favorite Dreamcast memory was living in the dorms and had a Dreamcast with 4 controllers. Any time of day I could open my dorm's door. Put in San Francisco Rush 2049, crank up the volume and as soon as "RUUUUSSSHHH" was heard on my floor I'd have 5 or 6 other people there ready to play.

This is by far my favorite system of all time and I go back to the Atari days. I still have my original launch day dreamcast and games. It runs perfectly. I so wish it hadn't died out so quickly but the PS2 was a juggernaut. I can say this, till this day I have never owned a PS2 and always felt some type of way towards it because my beloved dreamcast couldn't compete. I've owned every playstation console/handheld then and now except the PS2 and missed out on many games because of it. That being said LONG LIVE DREAMCAST. Great video as always!

Great video! DC will probably always be my favorite "true console" of all time. I kinda feel like after that generation, all the consoles are sort of personality-less gaming boxes that do the same thing. DC games for the most part had a look and feel that was bright, up-tempo, fast, and fun. Soul Calibur, Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Space Channel 5. It was kooky, but fun, and powerful. Personal favorites are probably Power Stone and Toy Commander. Just so many great, fun, terrific looking and playing games.

I got it at launch. The wow factor of NFL 2k is a big memory for me. I loved shenmue beat it on dreamcast, but I tried to play on ps4 years ago, but it just doesn't hold up very well today. I thought it was the greatest thing back in the day, though. I enjoyed playing online as it was sega who introduced me to the internet with Saturn, and I think it was called net link? Great times in late 99 and 2000!

Shhh, its thinking! Dreamcast was the first and last console I pre-ordered for Launch Day on 09/09/99. I got it from EB Games and got a cool Dreamcast t-shirt with it as a bonus. I got Sonic Adventure, Ready to Rumble Boxing, and Soul Calibur. Soul Calibur had me mesmerized as to how good the graphics had gotten for a home console. I was a young man in my late 20s with a full-time job, so I could easily afford it. Sega seemed to have their mojo back, but it wouldn't last too long, unfortunately.

Things didn't go too well after, which I won't get into, but I got my first job because I really wanted a Dreamcast. So it was the first console I ever bought with my own money. My standout games are Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Soul Calibur, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Shenmue 1 and 2, basically all of the 2K sports games, Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star Online. As someone that has basically become paralyzed by social anxiety, it's really hard to imagine that I used to actually go online with PSO and play with people. My original console stopped reading discs, which I blame on PSO, so I had to get a new console. Then the controller ports on the new console stopped working, but luckily I still had the original so I pieced together parts from the two consoles to make one that worked. I still have that console and most of my original games, though it's been years since I actually tried playing any of it. I don't usually comment online anymore, but figured I'd share since the Dreamcast will always be one of my favorite consoles.

What I ended u pplaying the most on mine was Crazy Taxi, but also Looney Tunes Space Race and Metropolis Street Racer. MSR evolved into Project Gotham on the XBox, while Looney Tunes Space Race was a genuinely fun Mario Kart clone on the Dreamcast. Going back and replaying it it's also brutally unfair, but I didn't really notice that bit at the time.

As a twelve year old I couldn’t afford. But one of the stores had it on display. It looked so cool! Bought a second hand one several years later. Even played some online over dial up back in the day such as PSOv2. I also really enjoyed the unreleased game Propeller Arena. Two years ago I installed the GDEmu but after a while it started having issues and got barely recognized anymore. Reinstalled the GD-Drive but that als doesn’t get recognized. I’m at a loss at what it could be and sad I can’t enjoy it anymore.

Great system, I still keep one in my entertainment system in my game room. I originally bought one because I loved Grandia on the PSX, but unfortunately I didn't like the sequel as they pretty much did a 180 on everything I loved about the original game. Only place close to buy a Dreamcast was my small town Walmart. I confirmed in advanced that they’d be available at midnight on 9/9/99. Rushed to the store expecting lines and all sorts of excitement but no. To my great surprise, the electronics section was stone deserted, as was the entire store, and it took some time just to find an employee who even knew what I was talking about. At last they emerged from the back room with a Dreamcast and some games for me. The midnight launch was a bit underwhelming and deflating, but I loved the games! Hydro Thunder was an early favorite.

I worked at FuncoLand during the launch of the Dreamcast. I was so pumped that I imported one before the US launch just to play Power Stone. I had a lot of fun trying Japanese games before the US releases, and several that never did make it out. Games were cheap and excellent. NFL 2K handed Madden its butt on a platter back then- it was a total upheaval. I have tons of memories of that awesome summer of 1999 building to that launch, and I still maintain that it was the best console launch ever.

I have to admit I was one of the people that waited for the PS2 and figured I would get the Dreamcast eventually, but it sadly didn't make it that long. I was working in a mall at the time and went to the food court for lunch one day after DC was cancelled and walked by a music store that also sold video games. They had a clearance for a Dreamcast and something like 12 games of your choice for about $80, it was too nuts to pass up. That was when I realized there was a lot of amazing games on the system that I had been missing out on. It was a swing and a miss by Sega, but boy was it a big swing. Gotta respect them for that, just wish they had done it sooner. I still have all my games and play them to this day.

I’ve watched the whole history of cartridge consoles, the golden age of arcade games, and have a tremendous respect for Sega consoles. I was an avid PC gamer at the time of the release of the Dreamcast. Nevertheless I was blown away what I saw! Top notch arcade graphics on a home console. And the most impressive part is they still look amazing and are a blast to play. Years later I still collect games and have great memories from this amazing console. Such a short lifespan but hundreds of games and too many gems and classics to even keep track of. Shenmue is one of my greatest gaming experiences. Sonic Adventure the greatest 3D platformer I ever played maybe tying with Mario Galaxy. It’s one of the consoles that gets better with age.

Hey John I love my Dreamcast, I’ve had it since new and getting games I remember traveling an hour away from my house just to get a copy of sega GT when it came out😝👍🏻 I have about 20 games and still buying them from eBay and have an awesome mom and pop video game store by me with new and old games and systems👍🏻👍🏻Now to find the fishing rod controller and bass fishing game🤔😁

I had one back in late 1990's and early 2000's, had a bunch of games burned using my pc using soft unlock (Bleem or something). I loved the system, liked many games, hated the controller, hated the memory card.

I never had one, but I remember playing Crazy Taxi at Sam's Club. My little kid hands were a little small for the controller, but I still thought it was awesome!

I loved my Dreamcast! I was working at EB Games the day it launched and picked up just about every launch title. It's a shame it only lasted about 2 years

I was 11 when that ghost fart dropped. I really wanted it to be bomb but by then I had tried snes after owning a sega for like 5 years. I remember seeing commercials for it like the graphics are so real it looks like a football game. But, the commercials were real footage of football games. lol, but seriously the one game that was awesome was like the first instance of mini planes and cars in a scale room of somebodies house and thought that was legit worth it.

Unfortunately I never got to own a Dreamcast and I don’t think I ever played one, but I do remember watching my college friends play SoulCalibur and Sega Bass Fishing. The one game I wanted to play was Skies of Arcadia and I bought my Gamecube mainly for that game. I was not disappointed!

Sorry John, to answer your question of what Dreamcast games had I played. On actual hardware, hardly a thing. My cousin got one when they were new, but I would’ve tried virtua tennis, and UFC. Tennis is tennis, but was fun for as simple of a game that is, it’s a good game. UFC on the other hand… the controls were way to much!, couldn’t get the hang of it

My favorites, not mentioned, are Soul Reaver, Red Dog, Carrier, and Gauntlet Legends. Really loved the system and wish I had picked up the games when they were super cheap.
